From Citizens Bank Park tonight, it's the opening game of a two-game set as the Philadelphia Phillies continue their homestand when they take on the American League's Toronto Blue Jays.
For the Phillies, it'll be right-hander Aaron Nolte making the start.
He's going for his third win in a row.
A 3-2, a 4-64 earned run average.
Nolte, who has gone six innings in each of his last four starts.
Maybe we'll push that a little bit deeper.
Beau Bichette leads Major League Baseball with 49 hits.
To the right side, Alec Ball on Glove's side.
Very smooth as he gobbles it up and brings it right to the bag.
One away.
Here's Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
He's hitting 318 with seven home runs.
21 runs batted in.
Just missed.
That's 95 on the fourth seamer.
It's the first walk he's allowed in three starts.
That'll bring up Dalton Varshow.
Swing and a miss.
Strikeout number one for Aaron.
He throws back-to-back change-ups, gets Varshow.
When's the last time you saw Aaron go back-to-back with change-ups?
So, two down, and here's Matt Chapman hitting in the cleanup spot tonight.
349 on the season.
A 2-for-2 in stolen bases for Guerrero.
There he goes.
Pitch is taken for a ball.
The throw to second base is in time.
Great tag by Stott.
And Vlady right away is saying, you should challenge this.
It's a called third strike.
Chaser still checking it out on video, but it doesn't matter.
It's a strikeout.
So, the inning is over.
So, they don't have to reverse the call at second.
That's right.
Alec trying to bounce back from a couple of starts
where he's really had to battle just to get through five innings,
100 pitches in each of his last two starts.
Inside.
Ball four.
Stott works out a walk.
So, now a base runner for Trey Turner.
Ground ball down to third.
Chapman to Espinel and on to Guerrero for a 5-4-3 double play.
And here comes Bryce Hartman.
Popped up.
Shallow left center.
Left field as the ball slices over.
And the inning is over.
Pretty quick first inning, 13 pitches for Minoa.
Here's Kevin Kiermaier.
And now he drives the ball well to left field.
This is carrying.
It is over the head of Schwarber and off the base of the fence.
And Kiermaier is easily into second base with a leadoff double.
So, top of the order.
And that means Bo Bichette with the infield in for the Phillies.
And a drive to center field.
Marsh is racing back.
Can't make the catch.
Kiermaier in to score on a booming double by Bichette
as the Blue Jays take a 1-0 lead.
1-0 Toronto as Bryce Harper bats.
3-2.
And that one is inside.
Ball four.
So, Harper works a leadoff one.
All right.
So, here's Nick Castellanos, the right fielder.
Had a base hit his first time up.
Got some Miami dudes here.
Minoa and Castellanos.
Minoa doesn't back down from hitters.
They always say, John, it's okay.
Just don't go up there.
Yeah.
If you're going to hit me, don't hit me up there.
And a 2-2.
And a high fly ball to deep left field.
Hooking toward the corner.
Gone.
Two-run home run.
Castellanos.
Try the chin music and then stay in there tight
and give the Fills the lead.
That's how you win a stare down.
Beau Bichette leads off for the Jays.
And another well-hit ball.
A long way to right center field, and it's gone.
An absolute missile to the opposite field,
and Beau Bichette has his eighth home run of the season.
It's already been a really good day, Nick.
Have a great one.
He's got two hits already today, including the home run.
He hasn't hit a double yet today.
What's wrong?
Down the left field line.
How about that?
He's going to hit that through the corner,
and he's going to get his way to second base.
Well, John, you should have triple on your mind next at bat.
Here is Kyle Schwarber.
One ball, two strikes.
Fouled that one off his foot.
Well, now you know what's going through his head.
Yeah.
Wow.
That hit his back leg?
Oh, man, right off the top of his foot.
He just looked into the dugout
and just pulled his head to the left, said, come on out.
Yeah.
All right, well, it looks like he's going to give it a go.
And a high fly ball to right.
Not that deep.
Merrifield is under.
Castellanos is tagging.
Nick's going to head toward third.
Here's the throw, and it is not in time.
Good enough.
Good job, Kyle.
Infield is in everywhere but third, and J.T. the batter.
Right center field, going back is Merrifield,
tagging is Castellanos.
He's going to score on a sacrifice fly,
and the Phillies have added on.
Phillies with two runners on.
There's two outs in the inning.
Phillies 0 for 3 so far tonight with runners in scoring position,
but they have a 4-2 lead.
The other way, a base hitter went right on by Bomes.
Bomes heading home.
The throw goes toward third.
Marshall safe.
RBI single for Sosa, and he's fired up.
It's a 5-2 Phillies lead.
All right, so we go to the seventh.
Aaron Noah's done six innings.
So has Kyle Schwarber.
Let's hope for the best for Kyle.
And now Sir Anthony Dominguez will take over.
And Merrifield lines the ball towards the left field corner.
Round first, but then put the brakes on
and head back to the bag with a leadoff single.
So here's Kiermaier, who has doubled and grounded out.
And there's a base hit for Kiermaier.
Up to second goes Merrifield.
But you know who is available?
Boba Shett.
2 for 3 with a double and a home run.
And a bouncer to first.
Bome has it.
Oh, and the pitcher wasn't looking.
Dominguez thought the ball was going to second.
And a run will score, and everybody is safe.
Look at that.
There's no angle for Alec to throw.
Smart move, but Sir Anthony's looking at second base
to see where the throw is coming from.
It's 5 to 3.
The tying run is at second base.
And here's Vlade.
Now Vlade gets hit.
I think he was going to look at that and make sure
it got him on the hand, not the bat.
So here's the thing.
If he hit the knob of the bat, it went to fair territory.
Yeah, then what's the call?
I guess it could be a put out at first.
I don't know.
After review, the call on the field stands.
Hit by pitch.
Philadelphia will lose their champ.
So it stands, which means they cannot confirm it 100%.
And look who's in the batter's box.
George Springer is pinch hitting for Dalton Varsha.
Swing and a miss.
Slide step worked.
Two outs.
That is huge right there.
Now Matt Chapman.
Ooh, it hit him.
A 5-4 game.
The bases remain loaded.
Danny Jansen, the backup catcher, is going to pinch hit.
They're trying to bring a right hander in.
It's a third.
Sosa's got it.
Hesitates a moment.
Throws across the diamond, and the inning is over.
The Phillies maintain a lead.
Kirk to begin the inning.
Kirk has grounded out to third in all three at-bats tonight.
Out to right.
Castellanos going back toward the scoreboard.
Makes the catch.
Didn't really have to move once he went to the glove side.
One out here in the eighth inning.
Talk about Nick having a great game.
Three for four.
Single, double, homer.
And then that play right there.
So Guthrie is at third.
Real Mucho is at second.
And Bohm is at first.
And here comes Brandon Marsh.
Swung on.
Line to right.
Right center field on the run.
Kiermaier towards a gap.
Still going.
He can't get it.
It's over his head.
It'll go to the wall.
One run is home.
Coming around third, J.T.
He is going to score as the throw is cut off.
And Brandon Marsh lines a double just out of the reach of Kevin Kiermaier.
And there's your insurance.
It's seven to four, Phillies.
Oh, infield in.
Just put a good swing on it here, Bryson.
Let's get a couple more.
Ground ball right side.
Espadal is coming home.
And Bohm is safe.
He got his foot in.
Eight-four, Phillies.
Craig Kimbrell on a non-safe situation.
His 15th ball game.
D.R.A. is high.
Here comes the two-two.
Swing and a miss.
He got him.
He attacked him with 97.
That's one fastball after another for the second out.
So that will bring up Vladimir Guerrero.
And the pitch.
And a called strike three.
The ball game is over.
The Phillies win it eight to four.
They just kept on adding on.
And that's two in a row for the Phillies.
