Well the Blues may have grabbed the leadership of the Premier League on Sunday but they once again
begin a match in second place following Arsenal's victory last evening against Chelsea. City have
two games in hand to overcome the two-point deficit starting tonight against a West Ham side
still requiring points to stay up. With another struggler Leeds United here on Saturday the Blues
have the opportunity to open up a four-point lead over Arsenal before the Gunners play at
Newcastle on Sunday. Rodri on towards Bernardo Silva and now there's plenty of movement up ahead
of Bernardo Silva and Grealish now scampers forward outside it goes to Bernardo Silva.
Bernardo Silva in a crossing position gives it to Grealish, Grealish in the penalty area,
Mahrez hits it first time, Fabianski makes the save, clips in a second time, City corner.
Yeah great play, square pass and then get your shots off and the keeper saw it late so it's a
good save, Fabianski will be pleased to get one in early on, just took a little nick. It's going
to take patience to break this West Ham side down, they're exceptional out of possession
at the moment West Ham, ball is with Diaz, Diaz into Rodri, Rodri to Stone, Stone to Alvarez,
Alvarez towards Grealish, Grealish now in the penalty area, ball into the box, Haaland got to
it but he was running away from goal and he headed it over the top of the net.
Yeah we spoke a bit, it's just about Alvarez there, just in that little pocket, half space
and then the quality, Souffle can't get across, oh he just needed to go back across into the far
corner there from Haaland, disappointed but better from City. You don't win league titles
by teams throwing in the towel and West Ham have started this game really well and they're round
the back and that's a great save by Ortega, Bowen got round the back from a throw and Ortega had to
stop him on the near post and West Ham have come as close as anyone to scoring here. City are having
lots of possession but they haven't broken West Ham down, here's Mahrez, on it goes to Stones,
Stones into the final third, sweeps it wide to Grealish, Grealish taking on Souffle, hits a low
shot and it's saved at the near post, no it's not, it's a goal kick, well City say that has
to be a corner, John Brooks has said goal kick, I thought that was a corner. Great point John,
just sucks in there, just left foot, caresses it across, that squares him up, you can't really tell.
West Ham still working exceptionally hard, Rodri has it, in towards Haaland, Haaland on the turn,
on towards Rodri and City have hit the inside of the post and it goes out for a goal kick,
I thought Rodri had scored, Rodri thought he'd scored, I think Fabianski thought he'd scored
but it hit the inside of the post, rolled across the line and went out for a goal kick. A great
little interplay there with Haaland, plays it into his body, takes a touch, the spin I thought would
take it in and it didn't, unfortunate. City dominating possession but still West Ham working
really hard, the ball is in City possession almost relentlessly, Rodri on to Grealish,
Grealish wide on the left-hand side, comes infield, gets the better of Souffle, plays it into Stones,
Stones on the edge of the area, pops it through and City will win a corner, excellent from Rodri,
City corner, it's coming Andy. You feel that it's only a matter of time. It's going to be another
City corner, another Mahrez outswinger, he's gone high and deep, Rodri heads it back in
and the head has gone wide, it was headed back across the goal by Rodri. That's a clever corner,
again just trying to play for the second phase, John's probably disappointed he's not found a
little corner there because he has stood centrally and saw it onto his head. And Cresswell has a couple of
options but he's lost it and Alvarez plays it to Haaland and Haaland is scampering forward for the
Blues, he has support from Grealish but West Ham have funnelled back in their numbers and Grealish
has fouled and it's a free kick to City and is that a yellow card for Downs? I think it might be,
the first one of the night and it goes to Flynn Downs. Just when the player makes a commitment
and he knocks it away and he's so good at it, it's a really dangerous situation here.
Mahrez with the left foot, pops it into the area, it's headed in, Nathan Ake, it's taken a set piece
but the Blues are in front and West Ham who are the masters of attacking set pieces have been
undone by a City one and Nathan Ake gives the Blues the lead. The ball's that good, it's all, it's impossible
to miss, he floats it in, it's just in behind and I just think it's Rodri there that sucks in
Ogbonna and that's the key, Rodri takes Ogbonna and leaves, it's really really poor from West Ham
but it's a fantastic ball from Mahrez and I don't think Ake can miss from there.
West Ham have come with a game plan, they've really administered it brilliantly, now here's
Haaland, Haaland advances, on it goes to Grealish, Grealish back to Haaland, Haaland, well he's got
Fabianski behind him and Fabianski to be fair to him did well, he's cleared as far as Grealish,
Grealish hits the shot wide. It's a great little run from Haaland, again he gets on the half turn
and it's just whether he could have got the half while he off, Kipper does well
but on this next phase here, there's just an area that Jack needs to improve, just on end product.
Hakata, lovely play again from the Brazilian, he looks a real handful in that central midfield
pulling the string, City win it back through Bernardo Silva, on it goes to Grealish,
Grealish on to Haaland, Haaland's through on goal, 2-0 City, had to be, Haaland doesn't miss those
and now he becomes the first player in Premier League history to hit 35 goals in a season
and the Blues lead by two goals to nil and you have to say Andy Morrison, it's Haaland's first
real chance, he's swallowed it up. Terrific movement and what a great ball just around the
corner from Grealish, we just spoke about West Ham being at their strongest but that's when they're
going to be at their weakest, that's when they're open one little mistake, this is brilliant here
from Jack, drives on the inside and then what a great finish. Erling Haaland has surpassed Andy Cole
and Alan Shearer and becomes the highest ever scorer in a Premier League season and listen
to the Etihad Stadium. Here he is on the ball Haaland, he slips it through to Bernardo Silva,
the low cross comes in and it's plopped away by Keira and out for a corner and Pep Guardiola
dramatically applauds, he really did like that move. And Ali just on that before they take the
score, am I getting carried away when I say that you know Izzy the next him and Mbappe the two
players that are coming along to take over from them two greats because to rewrite history book
you know I'm talking in the Champions League as well what this man is doing is remarkable
and has to be in there with a shout. Absolutely, Mahrez with the out swinging ball it's cleared.
It's in, oh my goodness me, Phil Foden, you little beauty, he's just hit a volley from 22 meters out
into the back of the West Ham nets, it was a thing of beauty. I'm looking at it and I'm thinking it
took a big deflection, don't get me wrong it's fantastic contact from this ball here but I think
oh you're right, there's no way Fabianski is reacting that way but you've got to make contact
and it's on target and that's the key anything can happen now he blazes out over the bar
there's no end product you know he's kept his body shape well and then unfortunately for Fabianski
and that puts the game to bed. Stearns stops that pass through but then it comes to Paquetar
and Ortega makes the save, Fornals and that shot's blocked as well. Bernardo gets into a really good
position and just blocks it off. The final word from Phil Foden who thumped in a third goal
it couldn't have gone very much better, City 3, West Ham 0.
