Welcome to China Insights with Jenny. In this episode, I'll have a conversation with Xi Wan
Fleet, a Virginia mom who fled communist China. She will talk about the similarities that she sees
between today's America and Mao's culture revolution. Hi Xi, thank you so much for
coming on our program. Thank you for inviting me back. Good to see you again. So Xi, I wanted to
invite you to talk about what we see happening in America today. I first start with the Tennessee
State Legislature. They expelled two Democratic House members last week for leading a chant
for gun control on the floor of the House chamber. Now, one of them returned to the
House as interim member already. But many young students showed up at the House floor before and
during the event to support these two members. I see that you sent a tweet which says,
totalitarians are always after the children and the young. And in that tweet, you included three
photos. One is the photo of young children during Nazi time, the Hitler Youth. The other is a photo
of Mao's Red Guard. The third one is a photo of young people protesting inside the Tennessee House
floor. Now, why do you compare the third one to the first two? What are the similarities?
I know. Yeah, people really responded to it. And that tweet really went viral. And because
they don't have references, they thought those young children or young students are brave and
doing something that they believe in. But it's not the case because anyone who experienced Mao's
China, the Cultural Revolution, knowing that the totalitarian regime always mobilized youth for
their political purposes. And that's what happened during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. And they
mobilized the indoctrinated youth for Mao's own purpose to gain power. And then after they
finished what they are told to do, they were quickly abandoned. And they were sent to the
countryside and basically exiled. And I actually was a part of that. And I was sent to the
countryside even though I was not a Red Guard. So people have no history on the reference. That's
why they don't see the similarities. And I talked to some older people who came from Germany,
and they said they remember the same thing happening in Nazi Germany. And that's why I
want to alert people, to tell people, this is nothing new. This happened before. And it happened
in Cambodia. It happened in the Soviet Union. It happened in every communist and totalitarian
country. You know, in a democratic society like America, we see people protesting all the time,
you know, on the streets, here and there. So are you saying that the protests you see
at the Tennessee floor by these young people are different from the normal protests that you see?
That's absolutely the case. Okay, you, in America, you have the constitutional
protective rights to go in the protest and has to be peaceful, and has to be in a setting that you're
not making a threat or disrupt the normal working of the society. And that's not what's happening.
They were there not to protest. They were there to disrupt the normal working of a legislative
body. They were there to intimidate. They were there to really shut people down. They're not
interested in having a conversation. I think that is more or less a riot.
The Tennessee State Legislature expelled those two Democratic members for leading a chant on
the House floor. I watched the video. So they used this amplifier, you know, they shout out slogans,
and there were people. Exactly what the Red Guards did. Exactly. That's what, they are not
interested in conversation. They're interested in just silence you, shut you up. And go ahead.
I thought that's interesting. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And so, are you saying that
you agree with the majority of the House members that having an amplifier chanting slogans with the
supporters on site, you think this should not happen? You don't think it's a peaceful protest?
It's not peaceful. And there's rules. There's law. And that is a lawmaking legislative body.
There's laws you have to follow. And that's really what's called democracy. You have to follow laws.
No, not them. They don't want laws. They don't want rules. They just want to disrupt. They want
chaos. What they are trying to do is nothing but intimidating the lawmakers to go their way.
And then they chant what? No action, no peace. And this is a very, very familiar slogan of those
rioters. They chanted that in 2020. I can't remember exactly. And also, whatever, no peace.
No peace, meaning we are not going to stop our disruptive violence or intimidation until you
obey us. And you do what we told you we are asking you to do. And that is a mob rule that
has nothing to do with democracy. And by the way, we are not a democracy anyway.
We are a constitutional republic. And this is not taught to the young children. They have no idea.
Look at the picture of the young children under 10. Look at their face. That's not normal.
It is absolutely not normal. It is a result of indoctrination. And you see that kind of faces
in the Red Guards. You can find that in the pictures.
So these young people who went to the Tennessee state legislature,
they think they're genuinely angry. They're angry about the inaction. They think that the gun
control law should be passed. And they think they're doing this out of their own will. Are
you saying that they're being used? Absolutely. OK, so this is organized.
It is not like a spontaneous reaction. They were indoctrinated with narratives
such as gun violence. And there's no one there to challenge them of this false narrative. There's
no such thing as gun violence. It's violence against people using guns. And they focus,
it is all very, very communistic tactic. So their goal is to disarm the population.
So they don't blame the shooters. They blame the gun. And then these young children,
they're too young to understand the difference. And the indoctrinators made them believe gun is
the problem. And so that's why they're being manipulated. They were not taught the other
side of the story. And they are also not, it's not coming from actually the children. It's been
this being used. And actually, I can talk about rallies or demonstrations on the other side by
conservative. You can see the pro-life rally, and you can see a lot of young people. And those,
I believe, first of all, I haven't seen any violent pro-life rallies or demonstrations.
But those are mainly from children that have been taught the value of human life by churches and
families. They go there, believe that human lives are valuable, and killing them is wrong.
So that is different from this kind of a protest, have one single narrative,
and they don't even understand what it is they're fighting for. Manipulation.
Yeah, you mentioned the pictures. I do see this alarming picture of young kids, like eight or
nine. They shouted at the legislature members with hatred on their face. I also saw a video of
the young protesters inside the House floor, and they were shouting,
you fascist. They used the F word. So you can really feel the hatred. And I'm alarmed by that
too. Where does that hatred come from? You're saying it's from indoctrination. Tell us
more about it. Elaborate. What kind of indoctrination they have received?
Because we, I myself, have that indoctrination. And that's what CCP did to divide people in China.
So there are two kinds of people. Actually, there are two groups. One is enemy, another
is the allies of the communists. The enemies are called black class. That happened to me, so
this is very familiar. When I grew up in China, we were taught from a very young age,
there are two groups of people. One is the allies of the revolution, and those are called people,
and the other is called enemy. And they are either property owners, or the people that
be condemned by the CCP, such as rightists, and anyone who stepped out of the line of the party
narrative, or not following the party narrative closely, those people are condemned.
Once you are condemned, you are no longer called people. People, the word people, is only
preserved for the allies of the communists. So by that simple word, enemy and people,
the enemies were automatically dehumanized. They're no longer part of the people.
And then that's not it. And all the things we learned, the entertainment, the movies,
and the songs we sing, and the movies we watch, demonize the people on the other side.
Landowners, they're evil. They are the cause of suffering for everybody. So they're absolutely
worse than enemies. They are to be condemned. Any violence, anything that's done to them,
they deserve it. So from a very early age, we accept it's okay to commit violence to those
people, because they're not even people. And the same thing is happening here,
and the demonization of basically conservatives. And the division here is not black versus red,
as in China. It is using race to divide people. And so white people are born evil. They are born
racist. And that's one way. And then the black people, they are born helpless in this racist
society. And that's what CRT is all about. But that's not it. And it's more than just race.
It's identity politics. Anyone who can claim identity becomes the victim. So their enemy
are those they disagree with, which is conservative. Go ahead.
So you're saying that in these young students' mind, whoever don't agree with gun control
are enemies. They're angry with them. And you're saying that they become angry because
these people, whoever they deemed enemy, these people are demonized by…
Evil people. They're absolutely evil. That's exactly the result. And that's why you can see
that hatred. And that's alarming. Alarming for little children. It is alarming to see that kind
of hatred in the innocent face. And that's because the indoctrination of hate. They have to have
hate among people in order to have their revolution. The purpose of dividing people
is to generate hate. They promote the hate so that these two groups were at each other's throat.
So from hate to violence, it seems there's only one step away.
Yes. And we are already there. And we can see that quickly progress from shouting, chanting
to what? To physical attack. We see Riley Gaines being attacked and chased by a trans woman and
have to be locked up for her safety while the police could not do anything. That's exactly what
happened in the Cultural Revolution. The police were told they cannot fight back if the Red Guards
hit them because that's mouth water. And that's what's going on today because the Democrats gave
a very, very clear signal to those protesters or those social justice warriors. You go ahead and
do whatever, we are backing you up, just like the vice president. She always shows up. She shows up
and takes side with criminals, and then she shows up and takes side with the rioters. That's a very,
very strong signal that encourages more of this kind of mob-like behavior.
Tell us a bit more about what you just said. You said that in Mao's Cultural Revolution,
the Red Guard can commit violence and nobody dared to stop them. Not even the police dared
to stop them. Actually, they dismantled the law enforcement
on the earlier stage of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Police gave a specific order,
do not go to the campus. That's where the initial violence took place. They were forbidden to
stop anything that the Red Guards were doing. Eventually, 95 or more percent of the personnel
of the criminal justice system were sent to the countryside, like exiled. It's totally dismantled.
So there's no one to stop the violence. That's why it becomes commonplace that people can be
attacked and killed, and there's absolutely no consequence.
We're not there yet, but we are absolutely on the path.
Wow. That's another alarming thing, what you just said, that it started in the campus,
back in the Mao's Cultural Revolution. Right now, we see that the Riley Gang incident is not an
isolated incident. She was attacked on the campus of San Francisco State University,
while she was giving a speech to oppose the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's
sports. And then, according to Charlie Kirk, a founder of Turning Point USA, similar incidents
happened in three university campuses, just in one week, where their events were interrupted
and speakers physically attacked. So this is alarming. I mean, it happens in the campus first.
It seems like, first, there are very aggressive people there, social justice warriors,
whatever you call it. Second, you no longer have room for free speech, because these people are
there just to give their opinion. They're not against anyone. They don't even give an opinion.
They just shut you up. Yeah, shut you up. That's exactly what happened. There's no dialogue.
There's no conversation. Tell me what you want. No, I just want you to shut up. That's all.
Yeah. So there's no free speech allowed in today's campus. Universities were
supposed to be the place where you have the most academic freedom and freedom of expression.
Yes, because the American Marxists have taken control of the academia for decades.
Going back to the 60s, actually, on many of the campuses in the 60s, they had similar protests,
and they asked for free speech, and they want to get involved politically. They want to bring
political activism on the campus. And that's exactly what happened then. Now, there are
protests again. This time is that they want free speech only for them. And then anyone that's from
other side are condemned as terrorists, extremists. And that's how America has become.
So it's a long process. It's how many years? 60s to the 20s. It's half a century.
It happened little by little, but now it's gone. There's no free speech anywhere on campus.
We can even have a handful of universities that are still conservative. They're all gone.
And now that's not it. Now they're going to public schools. They're going to
indoctrinate younger kids. And now they're going to kindergarten.
That's how they left. They were never satisfied. Never.
Another thing that I noticed is that with these movements going on,
they don't really talk about the facts. That is another sign, you can say, that's
indoctrination. They do not reason with you. They can't explain. The only thing they can do is shout.
It's not even indoctrination. It's not about what to think or how to think. They don't think.
They just respond. And that's what the Red Guards are. They respond to trigger words.
So if you say human rights, you say pro-choice, anything like that, you say Trump,
that's enough to trigger them. And then off they go to the street and
demonstrate. I have seen so many videos of people trying to interview those who protest and ask
them why. They don't want to engage. They walk away. They do not want to engage in conversation,
in debate. And that's absolutely the sign of indoctrination. I bet if you go to a pro-life
rally and ask those young kids why, they can tell you why. Not these people. No. They just
repeat the very, very confusing lines like fascism. What is it? I don't know. But you're a fascist.
I know. That's exactly what I was thinking. I was like, do you know what Nazis do? Do you
know what fascists do? What is it that these state legislature persons do that make you call
them that? Yeah. And that is when debate is off, when reasoning is off, you have basically robots.
That is what the Red Guards were. And that's what they made our young people to be. And that is
absolutely terrifying to see that that's the future. And then that's the Gen Z that we're
going to have, who absolutely bring watch to the point that they cannot or they would not see facts.
So where do you see things go in this country? Is there a way to reverse the trend? Or are we
on the point of no return? It is a question people all ask. I ask myself.
I think we are really in a very late stage of cancer. But there is hope. And there is still
hope. And that's why I just spend so much time on Twitter, because that is a very powerful platform.
And that's where I can engage the other side. And a parent just DMed me and said that
they live in California, and they have two kids, 17 and 15. And they were indoctrinated with all
this critical race theory. And it's not called a critical race theory. They never call it a
critical race theory, right? They call it ethics studies. And so they think that white people are
evil and racist. And so he showed, I don't know if it's a mother or father, showed my
tweet and my video to the children. And they changed their mind. And I do hear people say,
oh, never heard that before. Oh, my God, this happened before. And I think just little by
little, we probably have a hard time winning the hardcore leftist. But people in the middle,
I think we have a very good chance to at least make them think, make them question.
And that's a very good start. What specific tweet or video or things that you said that
make them change? What is it that they discover, oh, this happened before?
I believe it's the tweet that I draw parallels. And that's something that people react. And I got
so many good feedbacks and really encouraged me to do more. And it's because people don't know
history. When you don't know history, and you have no way to judge whether history has been repeated,
and you thought that's all new, and you think it's okay. But if you know history, you will say,
oh, my God, it happened before. It happened in China. It happened in Cambodia. And it happened
in other communist countries. And that's the same thing. And we know the result.
And so I think to teach the children and educate the adults about the history of CCP, of the
communist China, will help them to recognize that what's happening here is a communist revolution.
And because they understand, they will step up and push back.
You've been working on a book. Tell us a bit more about the book.
Yes, I have been going to places and talking to people and posting things. And one question
people ask me often is, do you have a book? Are you going to write a book? And it's not something
that I ever dreamed of doing. Never, ever. It's not entered even my mind. But now I say,
yes, it's necessary. No matter how much I talk, I can't list all the parallels.
The longest interview I have is one of them is with you. It's still just 45 to one hour.
So I decided, you know what, I just make myself do it. And I did it. And I started last
March. And I finished it early this year. And it will come out in October. And the title is
Mouse America, a Survivor's Warnings. And it's all about parallels. And I hope people are going to
read it and realize that it is absolutely the history repeating in front of our eyes.
Wow. Another very inspiring conversation with you.
I always learn things from you. It's always a great pleasure talking to you.
