This former defense post on the Franco-Italian border on the Maginot Line has long been a coveted military site. Today, the village offers visitors eager for authenticity, its streets paved with pebbles, its breathtaking view of the Côte d'Azur and its sunny climate.

The history of Sainte-Agnès village is rich and fascinating. According to a legend, the village was founded by Agnès, a Roman princess who converted to Christianity and built a chapel in honor of her patron saint after being saved from a storm. The village was a strategic site for defense and was coveted by various powers such as the counts of Vintimille, Provence, Savoy and even the Grimaldi family. The castle-fort was built in the 12th century on a rocky peak and was destroyed by order of Louis XIV. In 1932, the French army chose Sainte-Agnès to build a fort as part of the Maginot Line, a system of fortifications to protect the border with Italy. The fort was used for only 15 days during World War II, but it helped to prevent the Italian army from entering Menton. Sainte-Agnès was attached to France in 1860 when Victor-Emmanuel II, then king of Sardinia, ceded Nice and Savoy. In 1997, the village was classified among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” thanks to its exceptional heritage and location.
