Caroline Boissier-Butini
(Genève, 2 May 1786 - Genève, 17 March 1836)
Was a swiss pianist and composer. She was the eldest child of Pierre Butini (1759-1838) and Jeanne-Pernette born Bardin (1764-1841). The musician wrote that her father was her most important patron, though he played no instrument. She once noted in her diary: "J'ai un tiers consacré de ma vie à la musique" or "I have a third of my life dedicated to music", Journal no 3, probably 1806), while in the family environment nobody employed similar intensity with music. Caroline Butini belonged to the upper class of Geneva. She grew up therefore in a favorable environment for girls and received a broad general education. At 22 she was married to Auguste Boissier (1784-1856), who played the violin. Caroline Boissier-Butini was probably one of the most versatile among the Swiss composers of her generation. She must have had an excellent education both as a pianist and as a composer. The only name she mentions in her writings in connection with her piano training is Mansui. However, the numerous references to independent learning, even for those over the age of thirty, could also indicate a largely self-taught education. Butini's musical practice was reported in the general musical newspaper of March 1st, 1815. There the correspondent describes the “extraordinary skill [of Ms. Boissier] on the pianoforte”, especially in a concert written by her. In the spring of 1818 Caroline Boissier-Butini measured her musical skills with some of the best pianists in Paris and London. So she played in front of Marie Bigot, Ferdinando Paër, Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Johann Baptist Cramer and received unconditional praise, both for her works and for her interpretations. In Geneva she performed several times in the concerts of the local Société de musique in 1825 and 1826, also with her own works. Caroline Boissier-Butini died in Genève 17 March 1836. #ClassicalMusic
