Major League Soccer, the American version of football, or as many people call it,
the Retirement League. The 2023 MLS season is underway and honestly, I don't think it gets
the respect it deserves. A fairly competitive league with lots of teams in contention to win
the MLS Cup, the MLS has always gotten a bad rap and while yes, the MLS is in no way as good as
top tier leagues like the Premier League or La Liga, MLS has its interesting aspects that change
the game and make it just a little bit special. This is a video showcasing all of the special
things that Major League Soccer has to offer. For one, it is an unpredictable league compared
to a lot of the other European leagues. In Spain, we come into every season knowing that either
Barcelona or Real Madrid, maybe Atletico Madrid, will be crowned champions at the end of the season.
While in Germany and France, it's almost guaranteed that Bayern Munich and PSG are going to win.
That being said, the MLS is a pretty even playing field and yes, you do have those teams that are
always a chance that a smaller team might be able to make a run in the playoff section.
While LA Galaxy has always been seen as one of the best of the MLS, we can't say that they have
been as dominant as Barcelona or Real Madrid in Spain, giving even some of the mid-tier teams
slight hope of climbing the ladder. However, a deal breaker for most is probably that there
is no relegation or promotion in the MLS. While there are lower divisions, the possibility of
moving up or down is not available. And while that does eliminate the fun of a late season
relegation battle, it's not uncommon in the US since every major US sports league does not have
relegation or promotion. However, in the MLS, we have seen a lot of expansion teams come into play.
More recently, St. Louis City are debuting and have a good backing already for them.
Another unique aspect of the MLS is the single elimination playoffs. Apart from the on-field
differences, off the field, there is the salary cap and the MLS draft. The salary cap is something
that is seen in most American sports and pretty much limits the amount of salary that a team can
spend. The reasoning behind the salary cap is that by having a limitation on the money that can be
spent by a team, it prevents the rich teams in the league from buying out the best players from
the lower mid-tier teams, making the league more competitive. Another aspect of the MLS is the MLS
draft, similar to the NFL or NBA draft. Recent college grads come into the draft with the
opportunity of getting picked up by a MLS franchise, either going into one of their lower division
teams in the USL or straight to the first team, though this is rare. The draft depends on what
position you get in the league of the previous year. If you get last or close to that, you're
most likely going to get a high draft pick. You can trade your draft picks for money or players,
which a team will usually do when they think they can just buy a better player that's already in the
on a younger player. In this sense, you do reward the teams that do battle, but honestly,
you gotta help out the lower teams to make the league just a little bit more competitive.
The MLS cycle is also different. While every European league starts in August, the MLS starts
in February and ends in October, which actually suits the sport since some places in the US are
colder in the winter, so having the league played before the winter time is better for the fans and
the players. Well, those were some of the unique things that the MLS has to offer. I hope you
enjoyed and I'll see you all next time. Transcribed by https://otter.ai
