Tiger fans, thank you for joining us on Opening Day 2023.
Please turn your attention to the Tigers' Dugout as we welcome three legendary athletes
representing each of Detroit's other major sports franchises.
Calvin and Ben and Nick Lindstrom calling Miguel Cabrera out of the Tigers' Dugout to join them.
There is a Mount Rushmore of sporting greatness in the state of Michigan.
Playing in his final opening day of his legendary career, Miguel Cabrera.
Four Detroit sports legends can officially get us started on Opening Day.
Spencer Turnbull makes his second start of the season. How does he improve? We'll soon find out.
Well, I don't think he needs to try too hard. I think he overthrew in his first outing.
To left field. Eric Haas makes a running catch to start the day.
A little windy there, Simo. That wind knocked that ball down. Eric Haas, good adjustment.
Swinging a pop-up. Shadow left field. Haas on the run toward the line.
Will slow down, make the catch, and that's a good first inning for Spencer Turnbull and the Tigers.
He goes through Verdugo, Devers, and Turner. One, two, three, no hard contact.
Chris Sale looking to bounce back. The Red Sox starter.
His season debut against Baltimore certainly did not go the way he wanted it.
Just three innings, seven runs, three homers. Wow. I don't know if I've ever seen that from Chris Sale.
He's walked the first two batters of the game, missing with eight in a row.
That might be unprecedented in his career.
And in there, he caught him looking strike three. He freezes green for his first out. He needed that one.
Yeah, I like the sequencing, too. He went to the four-seam fastball up, sinker in, Reilly's chasing it,
and then gets him to freeze on that, because after you throw that sinker in, you're thinking,
okay, see it out of hand, oh, man.
First and second, they lead away, and he got him.
Foul tipped in the mid, held by McGuire. Chris Sale pulling it back together with back-to-back strikeouts.
The one-two. Swing and a miss. Wow.
He dispatched him with a slider at the back foot. How about that?
Two walks on eight pitches, and then Chris Sale strikes out the side.
No score after an inning. Masi Yoshida getting right at 200 with a home run.
Swing and a soft tapper to the left of the mound, fielded by Turnbull.
He'll turn, throw, no chance to get Yoshida.
On with an infield single.
Yeah, wind's not blowing out to left field.
It's amazing right here, staying through this ball.
Here's Casas. Another guy needs to get started again. Down to 158 with a home run.
Tapper back to the mound, fielded by Turnbull.
He'll throw to second, one, Baez relay to first.
Great pick at first by Torkelson.
And an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.
Beautiful job, the way he picked that ball up at second base and fired it at first.
That's big league action.
A walk to Jonathan Scope with one out here in the second.
Jake Rodgers batting.
Rodgers with a blast. Left field. That ball is gone.
Yeah, baby. What a celebrate opening day.
Two-run blast for Jake Rodgers, his second homer of the year.
And the Tigers have drawn first blood here on the Red Sox at Comerica Park.
That's why you want to get ahead, control the zone, right, Simo?
Here it comes.
He's sitting right at 300. K.K. to follow him.
Ground ball, base hit into right.
That got by Kreidler, rounding second, heading to third as Arroyo.
Just a ground ball in the right spot.
It would have been an out a year ago.
Yeah, that's right.
At some point this year, we'll stop talking about it.
But, Jim, I do think it is an early development
or at least one of the things we've really noticed through spring.
Chopped on the infield. Baez in the second.
And will not be able to turn two as the run comes into score.
Arroyo touching home. The Red Sox make it 2-1 Detroit.
And K.K. will pick up his fourth RBI.
A little field choice there, but Javi Baez is showing it off right here, how good he is.
Tigers have him at the corners with two away
as they look to respond to Boston's run in the half of this inning.
That brings up Miguel Cabrera.
I think Tiger fans, Jim, just ready to give him not just a good send-off,
but appreciate every at-bat that he has this year.
He's swinging a line drive. Base hit into center.
Torkelson in. Haas around second.
He will hold. Miguel Cabrera drives in a run here in the third.
Tigers take a 3-1 lead.
How cool is that, huh?
His last opening day in Detroit, and he delivers an RBI.
Here in the fourth inning, they're trailing 3-1.
Devers, his second at-bat. Raffey has grounded to second.
High fly ball, left center deep.
Green back at the wall, and kiss that one goodbye.
Home run, Rafael Devers.
Number two on the season as he goes to deep left center field.
And the Red Sox grab their second run.
That was an absolute blast.
I mean, that's Apo Taco right there.
To the fifth. Haas is getting into a double play first trip.
The 2-2.
Off Turnbull's glove.
Baez.
What a play!
What a play.
Come on!
That's both Baez and Torkelson.
That came up out of torque, and he just handled it like nothing.
He's six, brings up Haas.
And it looks like a pitcher violation here on Chris Sale.
So that is going to be ball one.
It's our first one of the day.
The 2-2.
There goes the runner from first.
Torkelson took off, but Haas swings and misses.
And strikes out to end the fifth inning.
Top half of the sixth inning.
Tigers by one.
Kike leads it off.
A one-hopper to Kreidler.
Takes his time.
An accurate throw for out number one.
Turnbull went down because I think the ball got a piece of the, maybe the wrist.
I thought maybe the wrist.
I don't really think he, yeah, no, I don't think he hit the glove.
I think he just kind of tried to get out of the way.
Might have snapped his neck.
Yeah, I think you're right about that.
I think you're absolutely right about that.
Not a lot of time to react there.
That ball was hit hard up the middle.
Right back at him.
Rafael Devers.
This becomes a big batter in a 3-2 game.
Home run into the visiting bullpen last time.
Swing and a fly ball.
Center field.
This one's deep.
This one's trouble.
Green is on the run.
He's at the fence.
And it is.
At the base of the fence.
It caroms back to the right fielder Fearling.
Coming home is Verdugo.
Throw to the plate.
Not in time.
Squirts away from Rogers.
And over to third goes Devers.
I think home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso is ready to go up with a right hand
indicating an out.
But instead, it's a double that scores Verdugo.
And we're tied at three here in the sixth.
I would agree.
Boy, that ball had tremendous carry on it.
Didn't it?
Even though with the fence.
4-12 there.
Tough play for Green in center field.
Duvall on the day has hit a hard line drive to left.
He's also popped up to second.
High fly ball.
Left center deep.
Green.
Back to the wall.
And that ball is out of here.
Home run.
Adam Duvall.
A three-run shot.
His third of the year.
Man, is this place quiet.
It's super quiet in here after that.
Just missed a couple fastballs.
And then he gets on top of it.
Just enough.
And this ball is crushed.
Positive energy.
Positive vibes.
Alex Lang coming into pitch for the Tigers.
Ground ball to third.
They'll come home.
And they've got Yoshida in a rundown.
They'll tag him out.
And actually Duvall retreated to second.
You just go back.
You go to third.
You stay there.
Or you go back.
Good job.
Good throw to the plate.
Fly ball.
Down the left field line.
Over toward the line.
Meadows tracking it.
And he will make the catch.
Whoa.
The wind played with it.
And he had to backpedal at the last to make the catch.
A step in fair territory.
Bottom of the ninth inning coming up.
Kenley Jansen bidding for what would be his first save in a Red Sox uniform.
He does have a win.
And a high pop up to right.
That should do it.
Verdugo coming in.
Makes the catch.
And the Red Sox win it.
6-3 the final score.
Two hours and 32 minutes.
Oh, you've got to love it.
And the Red Sox start this road trip in style.
6-3 a victory over Detroit.
