Connecticut, or the Constitution State, got its name from a Native American word that
means the place of the long river. It joined the United States on January 9, 1788, the
fifth state to do so.
The first Europeans to visit Connecticut arrived in 1614. Dutch fur traders established a fort
near what is now Hartford. The first English settlers didn't come until 1633, but they
soon outnumbered the Dutch, who abandoned their fort by 1654.
Roger Sherman, a delegate from Connecticut, played a critical role in creating the government
of the United States by presenting what is known as the Connecticut Compromise. This
plan is the reason that Congress has two houses. One house, the Senate, has equal
representation for each state. The other, the House of Representatives, has more members
for states with more people. This helped both small states and large states feel that they
would be represented fairly in the new government.
Another famous person from Connecticut is Noah Webster, who wrote Webster's Dictionary.
Connecticut was also home to the first hamburger and color television.
Here's a little bit more about Connecticut. I hope you enjoyed learning about Connecticut,
the Constitution State.
