Derek didn't want to live on his dad's money. He wanted to earn his own money and be his own man.

Parents should be proud of their children working any decent job. And parents should always know how to protect their children when need arises. It is also best that we know how to stand up for ourselves when it is necessary.

The man stood up for his son in the end, even though he berated him at the start for being a waiter. The bond between a father and son is so beautiful.

Being able to stand on your own two feet, and able to work proudly to pay your bills in life is nothing at all near a loser!
