The current theories as to how planets form around stars is called "nebular theory", it says that clouds of gas and dust, after collapsing to form the star, come together to form planets, but that the amount of gas and dust available is proportional to the size of the star. A study conducted by the University of Warwick has challenged this by finding a hot-Jupiter type exoplanet around an M-class red dwarf star.
