On July 20 1999 23 years ago the Chinese Communist Party began to suppress
Officially known as Falun Gong
We heard from a practitioner of the meditation discipline about how he refused to give in
to this persecution
At the same time events were organized in the United States to
raise awareness about the persecution in China And
lawmakers in Washington showed their support
It has long been believed that Beijing exerts significant influence over the NBA
Now a star athlete turned activist presents recordings as evidence of this suspicion
And an official Chinese report states that
at least 10 new variants of COVID-19 were detected in the last two weeks
Authorities call it a warning sign before a new wave
Welcome to China in Focus my name is Julián Bertone
On July 20 it marked 23 years since the Chinese Communist Party officially banned
The Falun Gong spiritual practice launching a national
suppression campaign against the meditation discipline
NTD spoke with a Falun Gong practitioner to hear what he endured inside a
Chinese concentration camp and how he found the strength to go on
This is the question Steven Yu asked when the Chinese Communist Party bega
The persecution campaign against Falun Gong on July 20 1999
To understand its history let's start from the beginning
He began practicing spiritual discipline in 1998 after
witnessing the miraculous recovery of a friend's mother
Mrs Sun was in a critical condition She had a
cervical herniated disc and was on the verge of death
I went to visit her because I wanted to say goodbye thinking it would be the
last time we would see each other but to my surprise she radiated good health
It practically jumped when it saw me and gave me the book "Zhuan Falun "
Falun Dafa's main teaching book is the "Chuan Falun "
When it was published in 1996 it became a national bestseller in China
I felt that it was something I had been searching for all my life
When I was in college I was already thinking about this
My studies were very intense at that time and I
wondered if my life would always be like that
I wondered why I put so much effort into my studies
Is it to achieve a high-ranking job or to become rich
But after reading Falun Gong I came to understand its true purpose
Life that is improving oneself and eventually returning to the place from which we came to heaven
Discipline spread rapidly throughout the country
In seven years it is estimated that between 70 and 100 million people practiced it making
In one of the largest spiritual communities in China
But in 1999 the communist regime considered the popularity of the practice to be a
It posed a threat to their power and launched a brutal campaign of persecution against Falun Gong
On July 22 Yu and other Falun Gong
practitioners were detained by the police for half a day
He said that at that moment he reflected
deeply on the situation and decided not to give up practice no matter what
In 2000 Yu was arrested again and taken to the Changyongwu labor camp
There he was confined for about a year
Falun Dafa is another name for Falun Gong but Yu explained why he never gave up
After years of trying Yu finally escaped from China at the
beginning of this year He arrived in the United States in March
You say you will continue telling your story and working to
expose the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong
Numerous events were held in the United States to raise
awareness about the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong in China
Let's look at some of them and how lawmakers in Washington showed their support
And the Chinese Communist Party has largely concealed the persecution for 23 years
The U S Department of State stated last Thursday
that the persecution is unacceptable and must end
Also on Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the persecution and raise awareness
Around her Falun Gong practitioners from all over the United
States gathered in the capital of the country
Before Thursday's rally in Washington Senator John
Boozman praised them for their perseverance saying
Rashad Hussein U S Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom
He turned to Twitter to express his support for
the millions of people
suffering persecution in China He wrote
This unfair campaign must end Senator
Ron Johnson also praised
the Falun Gong practitioners for their continued persistence in the face of what he called a
The congressman Stephen Lynch wrote in a letter tha
And while the Chinese government continues these atrocious violations of
basic human rights we cannot and will not stand by with our arms crossed
This ongoing campaign of persecution is drawing increasing
condemnation of the Chinese regime around the world

Now let's move on to NBA player and human rights activist Enes Freedom who
It has been working to reveal how the Chinese communist
regime influences the American professional basketball league
This week he appeared on Tucker Carlson's show and presented
what he believes is the evidence that Beijing controls the NBA
He has an inside view of the NBA after playing 11 years in
the league and criticized it for supporting Black Lives Matter
While remaining silent about the human rights atrocities committed
In foreign countries under brutal regimes such as the Chinese Communist Party
The 30-year-old player who also wore special shoes on the court tha
They showed slogans like "Free Tibet Free China
and Free Uyghurs " and was fired in February
Since then he was not hired by another team and his stance on the issues is assumed
Human rights issues in China rather than their game on the court is the reaso
Because it was banned from showing the NBA's
games in China an important commercial partner
But Freedom never presented evidence of the league'
s reasons until Wednesday night with Tucker Carlson
A recording featuring the lawyer of the Players' Association appeared on the show
From the NBA Rom Klemner talking about what the specific problem was
A recording of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
about the Freedom shoes issue also appeared
Freedom then joined the program and said this is proof of how a
100% American company is controlled by the Chinese dictatorship
Meanwhile the 1 meter 86 centimeters tall player still hasn't
signed with any team and the NBA season starts on October 19th
Next let's move to central China where the number
of new COVID-19 infections reached a two-month high
And everything is happening as the country faces an enormous heatwave
Chinese authorities reported more than a thousand new COVID-19 cases at the end of
Last week
This according to data from the National Health Center of the country
But taking into account Beijing's history of concealing
cases the number of infected could be much higher
These new cases set a record since May
Many are emerging in the central regions of the country and are spreading
Inland from the main coastal centers or near-coast cities such as
Beijing and Shanghai cities that also had outbreaks early this year
But there is another problem
Under China's zero-tolerance policy towards the peach virus
Due to COVID-19 cities discovering new cases face partial or total closures
And all of this is happening alongside a heatwave in the country
In various regions temperatures are exceeding the scorching 42 degrees Celsius
And to make matters worse in the first half of 2022 China suffered dramatic losses
Economic due to the long-term lockdowns caused by the virus
The country's manufacturing and supply chains were severely affected and many
Foreign companies are moving their factories out
of China to deal with the situation
It is possible that China is facing a new wave of the virus
with at least 10 new Omicron variants detected in two weeks
That is what an official report from the communist regime says
For now China claims that the new variants originate from outside its borders
It appears that their origins include the United States India and some European countries
For example the city of Chengdu in southwest China reported a
new variant on Sunday
Authorities say it was first detected in the United States in early [year]
This year and that played a dominant role in local broadcasts
A report cites a Chinese public health expert who says China should take action
They are strict in both directions blocking any possibility of
case imports and maintaining the country's strict zero-COVID policy
The report warns that variants should not be taken lightly and points out that the
Grapes may not cause severe symptoms for most people but they can evade detection
Easily the immune system spreading rapidly and mutating into more new variants

They took away even the right to mourn That's what a resident
said on the anniversary of the severe flood of the year
past in a central Chinese metropolis
How many died during the catastrophe
It remains a mystery
This Wednesday will mark one year since the Zhengzhou flood but
Chinese citizens say they are being prevented from publicly mourning
Last year around this time the city of Zhengzhou was largely flooded
In one of the worst incidents recorded hundreds of passengers and long lines of vehicles
They became trapped in a tunnel when the water started flowing rapidly
It happened in a matter of minutes
Speculation continues about a cover-up as the number of
victims from the disaster remains uncertain a year later
Now there is no truth in that society
How many people died in Zhengzhou
The official figure is 400 but some say 40 000 or 4 000
All are different
It is very dark and the Chinese Communist Party is doing everything possible to cover up the truth
And this year authorities could suppress the commemorative acts of the victims
An Internet user shared their experience online saying that
they ordered flowers and planned to visit the tunnel after work
It was then that she received a call from the florist informing her of a
notice above which probably means it comes from the Chinese authorities
The announcement stated that
all businesses in the city were banned from selling flowers for reasons of mourning
Stores were also asked to confirm one by one the reasons for purchasing the flowers
This is what another resident said
It is normal to remember a deceased family member or friend
but the Communist Party believes it threatens its regime
If this type of mourning is observed it will bring back memories to people
That is exactly what they fear
After the news some say they even lost the right to mourn
American legislators are intensifying their calls to deter
the Chinese Communist Party
And it happens as they cite the
growing threats that China poses to Taiwan and the United States
The leader of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives and the members of the Group
The US arms sales to Taiwan are being
pushed by the US-China working group
The debate arises as China warns it will take strong
actions if Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan to show her support
A journey that according to Biden
But legislators say the
United States must deter the growing aggression of the communist regime
They are also supporting legislation to prevent
delays in delivering weapons already sold to Taiwan
Meanwhile President Biden said on Wednesday
And Congressman Guy Rosenthaler pointed out the following
Biden said on multiple occasions that the United States would
defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack
But later White House officials retracted those comments
And it is not yet clear whether Biden's plans to speak with Xi Jinping will proceed
Those affected by the fact that the president tested positive for COVID-19
That's all for today on China En Foco Thank you for joining us and see you tomorrow
