There is nothing like opening day. All is new again. Hopes for an unforgettable season are high. As we kick off the long-awaited 2023 season. Here is Adley Rutschman. First at bat of the season. The Orioles one of the best teams in the American League with him. They get a full season of him now. They get a full swing from him now. It's in the right field. It's a home run. His first opening day swing. Adley Rutschman puts the Orioles on the board in the new season. With a home run at Fenway Park. Here's your 2-0 pitch. Target down the middle. Ball down the middle. Maybe a little bit inside. And again from this side. He has a special, special swing. Wow. Consecutive walks for Klober. A pitcher who had the lowest walk rate in all of baseball last year. He walked just three percent of the hitters he faced. And he swings and bounces it softly. In a couple of hops, the charging shortstop. Kike has it and throws him out to retire the side. 6-3 ends the inning. Well, welcome to the leadoff spot. Verdugo. Out of the left center by Verdugo. Bounces back into the end. He's rounding second. Verdugo on his way to third. And he slides in with a three-base hit. One key to this, though, is Mullins. It gets up into the sun, kind of blinds him, and kind of tries to throw his glove up at it. And right out of the box, he is hustling. Seeing it off the wall and taking three. Getting in scoring position. Less than two. Huge. Devers signed to be a member of the Red Sox through at least 2033. A little ground ball on the right side. That will get it done. Scooped up by Mountcastle. The run is in, and this game is tied. Masataka Yoshida, Red Sox new left fielder from Japan. A little battle here to Frazier. Red Sox get one. They have tied it up on the RBI from Rafi Devers. Now Hayes, very good first half a season ago. Struggled in the second. As Rutschman goes for two. He's out. Arroyo got cleaned out there at second base. We'll see if he gets up quickly. That didn't look good all around. Yeah, a little bit of a flop right there and got kicked in the head. This is probably one of the oddest slides. He's trying to get his hand in there and then just gives up. I can't even say it with a straight face. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. If you're a young hitter and you don't swing at balls. And here to left field for Urias toward the monster. And there will be no play for Yoshida. Ramon Urias leaves the building. Yoshida was hoping to play it off the monster. Urias goes over the monster for his first home run of the season. The Orioles second on opening day. And Baltimore bursts back in front. Back to back first pitch assaults for the Oriole eight and nine hitters. And runners are at the corners with only one out. Right now the Orioles are in everything Corey Kluber's throwing. Mullins the batter. A great running opportunity for Brandon Hyde. Three and two for Mullins. And he walked him. And the bases are loaded. And that's going to do it for Corey Kluber. And the new pitcher is the right hander Zach Kelly. Now the bases all loaded up here. Kelly out of the bullpen. It's a two-walk game for Ryan Mountcastle. He didn't walk a single time in spring training. He's walked twice. And he's driven in a run on this opening day Thursday. It is 5-1 Baltimore. Rafael Devers who drove in the Red Sox's only run of the game with a ground out in the first inning. Days. Hayes. Can't base hit. Absolute rocket there by Rafael. And a good start to the inning for the Sox. Mazataka Yoshida takes a called strike. He grounded a second in the first inning. In one year he hit 29 home runs. He didn't get drilled here. Did not put Red Sox on the corners. Here's Adam Duvall. Another Red Sox newcomer. Yes. Drives that one to the monster. And the scorer Rafael Devers hits so hard that Yoshida could only move up to second. And the Sox are on the board again. It is 5-2. And Mateo with a single and a stolen base. And a four-run fourth. All right. There's the first disengagement. No rule this year. And look at that huge lead for Frazier. And Frazier takes second base uncontested. Disengage this. Adam Frazier with the easiest steal of his life. So keep him off base. Mateo Fairbaugh tucks it inside the first base bag. Frazier is going to come home after the stolen base. And Jorge Mateo has a two-hit opening day. Orioles back up by four. He's already stolen a base today. Led the American League last year. And there he goes. Mateo's on the move. McGuire won't throw it. That's three uncontested Orioles steals. The bigger base era is a beautiful thing for the birds. It's going to be down low and a block out here. Fenway's getting antsy. And Adley's coming up because Mullins takes the Orioles. That's eight blocks. Eight free passes. Here's Rutschman. Mullins is going. You think Rhys McGuire is going to throw it? Rhys McGuire could not have any less interest in throwing a baseball to second. On a two. Adley Rutschman. Base hit left field. Mateo's in. Mullins is in. Rutschman is on board. His fourth at bat. Opening day. His fourth time on base on opening day. Adley Rutschman beginning what could be one of those memorable seasons for a young player. Rafi has an RBI and a ground down. He's also torn into a double. Lunging. That one's going to settle down. Picked off by Santander after another hit for Rafi Devers. He is on the base hit. Turner. Set. Man. Santander can't make the play. First and second. That's going to end Kyle Gibson's afternoon with the left hander Masataka Yoshida coming up. So now Keegan Aikin will come in. Devers at second. Turner on at first. Dive and a miss there by Frazier. That's in the outfield. Devers. He will score. It's Turner down to third. That'll make it eight to three. He and Yoshida with his first Red Sox hit moments after Turner had collected his and Yoshida with his first RBI. You know they said he's a lot like Ichiro Suzuki. Jefferson one play and he gets Mateo by a few steps but he sacrifices himself for Frazier to get to third and Mullins batting with Rutschman on deck Cedric Mullins gets it through the drawn in infield and Mullins punches an RBI single to right Mullins reaches base for the third time Frazier scores for the third time it is nine to four probably not one they got just one and they've got five steals today Mullins with his second stolen base. They're running wild on Reese McGuire and all the Rutschman swinging away hits his fourth hit of the game and Mullins will be waved home. Yo she throws cut off Rutschman is called out at second base but it is a four hit game a career high four hits for Adler Rutschman in his first major league opening day. He pumps the lead to ten for one and two to Rafi from Brian Baker. He's out now. He is out. That is strike three. How about that. So we see that here on opening day. I think Rafi can believe it. I'll tell you when it rains it pours. The bases are loaded for Tristan Casas. All in the center not very deep moving over Mullins to make the catch. Turner will tag.
