Follow International cricket sensation and MLB Europe Ambassador Harry Brook as he heads to Florida to join up with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Spring Training camp. Harry’s goal? To learn the fundamentals of hitting in a single day. Harry’s challenge? To smash a bigger home run than Spencer Owen at Home Run Derby X, with just 100 seconds on the clock.
The question is: will his skills at the cricket crease translate to success on the diamond? It’s time to find out!
So I'm Harry Brooke, an international cricket player for England.
When I was made MLB Europe ambassador, I received a challenge.
It's on you to hit a bigger home run than I did repping the Cubs in just 100 seconds.
Did I do any preparation? Maybe a little.
I went over to spring training in Florida with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team I'm repping.
Harry, what's going on? Nice to meet you, I'm Ryan Ludwig.
Walk-off home run for Ludwig.
Lovely to meet you too. I'm really looking forward to this.
I've never done baseball before and hopefully you can teach me a few tricks.
We're going to go in the locker room, get you some Cardinals gear.
We're going to head to the cages and get started, man.
All right, good morning.
Before we get started, I have a guest who will be with us all day.
He's here for the London series.
Considered one of the young, most successful cricket players in the world.
So we're glad to have you, but he's here to learn how to hit.
Harry Brooke.
I'm Harry Brooke. I'm an English cricketer.
I've just come over from New Zealand.
I'm obviously having a little hit with you guys today.
I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can grab a few tips from some of you.
Perfect, perfect, perfect.
He'll be with us all day. Hang out with him a little bit.
He may have some questions for you.
Thank you. Thank you, guys.
This is our batting tunnel.
We've got all the guys in there hitting right now.
You can see the swings.
Obviously, it's a little different mechanics than cricket.
Head down here and see what you've got.
Take a couple of hacks and see where you're at, man.
Face me. Let's see those mechanics, man.
I like the hands. Good hands.
Nice, nice. Definitely can work with that.
So, Harry, we've got a cage open.
You want to get on a tee in here and take a couple of swings?
Absolutely, that's how I go.
Let's do it, man.
I'm going to pull aside.
If I can touch that in this position, I know I'm going to have plate coverage on the outside corner, right?
Let's see. Let's see what I've got.
Let's give it a go, bro.
Alright, alright.
Now, see where you're carrying your hands down here?
Yeah.
Now, let's try to get them up a little bit higher to start.
So, this is our major league hitting coach.
Nice to meet you.
We've got our two assistants here, Daniel and Brandon Allen.
We might have to send you to Turner in the offseason because he's got a smile on his face.
He sees some talent here, man.
It's going to come at you and then move away from you.
It's going to go like this.
That feels so good.
See that, Pauly D? You see that?
First time hitting a baseball.
It was a lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be.
I was expecting to just be able to hit it easily enough.
So, there will be 30 players out of them boys in there who get selected.
Remember how pitchers are usually tall?
Yeah, I was just wondering. Massive.
Yeah, big, tall. That's this organization.
Good to have you, brother.
Nice to meet you.
He's a big boy.
I just noticed you hold it like on the…
End?
Yeah, like right on the end.
Yeah.
Why?
I do it more for like…
I feel like I can control the bat, the barrel a little bit more.
I just feel like I can control it.
I've done it since I was a little kid.
Who's the best hitter here?
I think that's debatable.
There's a lot of them.
This is perfect timing.
So, he's going to be working with you today, too.
This is rough timing.
This is our minor league hitting coordinator right here.
I work…
He's kind of my boss.
I work behind him and help him out.
And he does a great job with all our minor league guys.
And he's kind of the mind behind the madness of teaching all our young guys
the correct way and the correct mechanics of a great swing.
Cool.
Sounds good.
Yeah.
Excited to work with you.
You ready to hop on in there?
Yeah, I'm ready to try and hit some bombs.
Let's go do it.
It's almost a natural, bro.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Good crowd as well.
You try to go this way into the ball.
You try to rotate into the ball.
There you go.
Nice.
Very nice.
Good.
There we go.
How's that feel?
Yeah, good.
Okay, so we did flips to start and then we did a little bit of overhand.
Now, we're going to graduate to the machine.
So, it's going to be real speed just like you're in the game.
You ready for the big time, brother?
I'm ready.
Let's do it.
Suit up, baby.
Let's do it.
Yeah, that's pretty good.
Nice.
Everything is now primed for your challenge against Spencer.
I can't tell you how far he's hit it, but we have 100 seconds to beat his distance,
and we have to hit it past 300 feet.
You ready for the challenge?
Beautiful.
Let's do it.
All right, let's go.
Let's do it.
Three, two, one.
That was a one.
Triple.
That was a really good challenge.
You got four over 300.
So, I think you're sitting in a pretty good spot to win this thing.
It was great to work with you and to see you out here,
and I hope you enjoyed being a part of our organization for the day.
Yeah, Harry, I thought you did an outstanding job, man.
It was a pleasure working with you.
Thank you.
Thank you for being an ambassador for Major League Baseball.
I know the Cardinals are really looking forward to getting over there in London
and playing in front of the U.K. as well as the Cubs,
and I couldn't ask for a better human being to come down here and be a part of this challenge, man.
I wish you all the luck, obviously, and I look forward to watching you.
We pulled up your highlights today in the clubhouse on cricket,
so I might have to pull you up a little bit this year and check out how you're doing, man.
Definitely. Thank you very much once again.
Cheers, guys. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Spencer hit 359 feet, which is not bad. I'm impressed.
I'm a fairly confident person anyway. I'm pretty confident that I'll beat Spencer.
All right, let's do this. Start the clock.
Yes!
I came here to beat Spencer, and I've walked away a winner, so happy days.
Obviously, he's worked hard at it, though, so he's put in a lot of hours and a lot of training,
and I obviously only had that one day, so I'm happy to walk away a winner.
