The Buddy: A Heartwarming Story of Friendship and Acceptance
In this touching film, we follow the story of Hidayat, an 8-year-old boy assigned to be a buddy to his classmate, Tam. Hidayat soon realizes that Tam's strange behavior bothers him, even though teachers and parents write it off as shy and "weird." Even with all of these problems, Hidayat accepts Tam's differences and tries to understand him, which helps them form a special bond.
Set in the 1990s, the film subtly addresses autism and the lack of awareness surrounding the disorder during that time. With a focus on the innocence of childhood, "The Buddy" centers on Hidayat's journey to do right by his friend in a world that struggles to understand him.
Directed by Jason Lee (Singapore)
Director's Statement:
No two autistic persons go about things in exactly the same way and it is incontrovertibly unjust to label them as a mere category. Just like any other individual, they have the ability to experience emotions and to give affection. In 'The Buddy', we see Tam, a primary school boy, who builds a friendship with Hidayat, his classmate-buddy. The friendship is innocent, pure and genuine.
