In 2021, the space agency's inspector general, Paul Martin, warned that significant delays in bringing new spacesuits to fruition could hinder NASA's goal of getting humans to the moon by 2024. Despite spending over a billion dollars on next-generation suits, Martin concluded that they wouldn't be flight-ready until April 2025 at the earliest, with completion still years away. As a result, NASA allowed the private sector to take over, and Axiom Space was selected as the contractor in September 2022. In a stunning development, Axiom recently unveiled the new spacesuits that astronauts will wear on the moon, marking NASA's first new spacesuit since the Space Shuttle era. After more than 50 years of white, bulky spacesuits, NASA’s astronauts are getting an upgrade — a new suit that’s more nimble, comfortable, and designed to fit a broader array of body types. Unlike the iconic garments worn by the Apollo astronauts more than 50 years, this new suit is a "rental" — designed, built and soon to be leased to the space agency by Axiom Space, a space services company.
