Last week I spent a few nights in Jendouba, exploring the surrounding Roman archaeological sites. This included checking out the amazingly well preserved Bulla Regia, which is only 9km to the north-west of the governorate capital. Bulla Regia had Berber, Punic, and Roman periods of occupation, but is most famous for the underground housing that was built to shelter residents from the midday heat during the rule of Emperor Hadrian (117 to 138 CE). As always I had the site completely to myself, so no large tour groups to contend with when it came to getting the perfect shot! Come join me as we wander around the amphitheatre, forum, temples, baths and even one of the subterranean houses, which a very well preserved mosaic!
So I've just woken up in my not very luxurious hotel in Jenduba and here's the plan for today.
So we are here in Jenduba. The plan is we are going to drive up to Bula Regia and check that
out. That's an archaeological site. So here I am in Bula Regia and as you can see, as it's becoming
a theme for my travels around Tunisia, I have the place completely to myself and look at how
well preserved all of this is. All the signage is missing so I'm kind of guessing that this is
the Forum and then the Temple of Apollo next to it but feel free to correct me in the comments if
I'm wrong. I don't know if you can see but there are two shepherds there just underneath that tree
in the shade. I mean what an incredible backdrop to have to your everyday just looking out over this
impressive underground structure and the mosaic still there. Let's go down and check it out.
This is the house of Amphitrite, the sea goddess, although actually
that's Venus. I see why they built down here because it's a lot cooler than outside.
Here we have the Mimian baths. You can see these from the road as you come past.
The museum has sadly been closed for years.
