Hey everyone, welcome to our On The Great Couch segment.
I'm Carmen.
I'm Dan.
I'm Mike.
From The Run List.
So today's story is...
This was really, really popular on YouTube actually.
This is a video of Teresa Teng.
I'm not sure if you guys know of her.
Deng Lijun.
Don't know who that is.
Goddess.
She is very, very...
What's the equivalent of her in the West?
Madonna?
Is she like Wan Fei?
Fei Wang?
What? Who's that?
You don't know who Fei Wang is?
Oh man, how did...
She sang the song to Final Fantasy VIII.
But anyway, she's passed away for like over 18 years now.
And she recently went back on stage
at a Jay Chou concert.
You lost me.
In a digital form.
This Californian company called Digital Domain 3.0.
And they actually, you know how last year
at the Coachella Music Festival,
they did the Tupac...
Right, they virtually resurrected her for a performance.
Yes.
A duet.
Yes.
With Jay Chou.
Yes.
So they sang one of her songs and two of Jay Chou's songs.
And she looked real.
She looked really real.
And what was amazing was that because
you know, Jay Chou came recently.
And she basically sang his songs with him.
So how did they make her voice
sound like her voice?
You know what I'm saying?
They could probably do that with all the technology these days.
I know, but that's really cool.
And like even the mannerism and stuff.
I think that's pretty cool.
You know what this could lead to, right?
Is...
Could be movies in the future where
any actor from history
in any one of their...
Whatever age you want them to be in
could be in a movie.
Like Bruce Lee versus...
No, wait, wait, wait.
But let me ask you a question.
Her performance, that was pre-recorded.
No.
No, it was live.
Digitally...
They...
So it was brand new.
Yeah.
That's what I'm saying.
Like she sang Jay Chou's songs.
She sang...
They sang one of her songs together.
Because I thought that that was pre-recorded.
No, it wasn't.
They projected her on stage.
Oh my...
They basically cloned her.
Right.
Yeah.
That's insane.
So imagine in the future...
Forget about it.
Bruce Lee fighting Muhammad Ali.
Muhammad Ali in their prime.
Epic battle.
Mike, I think you just blew my mind.
I mean, you could do anything.
You could literally...
But that's crazy because
I think they wouldn't do that
because like why would you have
Daniel Day-Lewis play Lincoln
when you can have Lincoln?
No, no, that's what we're saying is that...
Yeah.
The dead people can be resurrected
in the role they want to be in.
What I'm saying is
I think people still want to see actors portray
the person.
I don't know.
Rather than seeing the person.
I don't know because like recently...
In movies.
Okay, movies.
On stage is a different story.
Okay, but there's something else.
Like there's a...
I think it's an anime character.
I forgot her name
but I'm pretty sure a lot of our viewers would know
that they make...
She's just an anime character
and she sings songs
like electronically, you know, made songs.
And they have basically sold out concerts
of this like virtual image
of anime character singing.
I think that's cool and all.
And then I think the music thing like,
you know, what if you had a concert
with Biggie and Tupac, right?
That would be cool.
That would be really cool.
Or like bring back like Kurt Cobain or something.
But I think for acting,
it's a little different
because I think when you see a movie
and a play, like you don't...
I don't know.
I would feel weird if I saw the actual...
I mean, they already have movies
with full CGI characters in them.
They've done this already.
It just didn't look that real.
But now it could be like
they could probably bring back an actor
or actress that looks the part.
Yeah, I think it'll be cool.
I would really be interested in seeing that.
You know what this might lead to?
Is that, you know,
Hollywood might shut down
in terms of actors and actresses
might be out of a job.
That's what I'm saying.
I don't think that would happen
because first of all,
they're also a union.
Depends on who's cheaper.
They're also a union.
I don't think it's cheaper for CGI.
CGI is a lot of money.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But also it's union.
It's like you're trying to shut out a union.
They won't let it happen.
Well, what I thought it was interesting
is that why Jay Chou did it
because he wants to introduce
basically a whole new generation of,
you know, young people
who never heard of Deng Lijun.
Yeah, like this classic lady.
And like she was really,
really famous in Asia,
like all over China,
although actually she was banned in China.
That was very interesting
because she's kind of
they deemed her like anti-communist.
Yeah, I still hum one of her songs.
Please, please do.
Are you kidding me?
I don't I wouldn't know what it is.
But please, I don't know what it's called.
I think it's called Tian Mi Mi.
It's probably her most popular song.
Tian Mi Mi.
Well, let's ask, let's ask the audience,
like if you could resurrect
any people from history
and see a show or a fight,
who would it be?
All right.
It's a controversial new rule in China
called the 500 rule.
So basically slanderous contents
of rumors that has been reposted
500 times or attract over 5000 views
can put the author in danger
of a basically defamation charges
and a three year jail sentence.
So basically, for example,
if I have a Weibo account
and I said something that's a rumor
that's been posted 500 times
or viewed 5000 times,
then I might get in jail.
Wow.
So basically this is a new form of censorship.
Even Chinese lawyers are saying
this is just a new ground for Beijing
to have more authority
over whatever people say online.
Because like you say, yeah,
what is considered a rumor?
Right, exactly.
You know, like and plus
there's no due process trial system.
So if the government goes,
yeah, that's slanderous.
And the guys like prove it.
And they're like, we don't have to.
You're going to jail.
That would happen.
And and people are saying, well,
you guys in the Chinese media,
state owned media,
you guys make up rumors all the time.
Right. So what about.
Yeah, you guys.
Oh, but it doesn't apply to those people.
It doesn't apply to the state.
Of course, it's crazy.
So, I mean, what's going to happen?
Are people going to figure out
how to beat the system,
like keep the views down?
Are they going to or are they going to
499 times take down the post?
Exactly.
Take down the post.
I mean, maybe.
Or because I think, after all,
why people do that is they they they
it's the human need to get out information
and educate yourself and your peers.
I think it's a very basic human nature.
Well, this is also a scary law.
Yeah, it's very scary.
Because like I said,
like a lot of people overseas,
they rely on those kind of things.
Absolutely.
To monitor what's happening in China.
And without that,
if there's no way to circumvent that.
Right.
Then people are going to be, you know,
they're going to lose a huge source.
Absolutely.
Well, actually, what I think is
that if they do follow that law,
it's actually not that bad,
because at least like they will
figure out a way around it.
But most of the time,
I'm pretty sure it's just BS,
because there are people
that just like post one thing,
like one question and they get detained.
So it's I don't think
I think this is just something
that would like, you know,
it's kind of like a gauge,
like, OK, this is it.
But depends on what you post.
I'm pretty sure if like
Ai Weiwei posts one thing
and only one person saw it,
he can still be arrested or whatever.
This is just a tool that they now gave
the Chinese authorities.
This is just a tool.
You could do anything online.
Now I have the authority to bust you.
And hey, it's legal
because this is a new law here.
Yeah, it's crazy.
Well, guys, tell us
what you think of this new rule.
Comment below.
The last part is hashtag
AskOTGW and it's from Angela Waiso.
OK, so I've been
I've just been asked to a wedding
and asked to be in the sister's party.
You should do a video on
兄弟姐妹團 in Chinese wedding.
So I think we should discuss it
because, you know, Mike somehow
seemed to be the wedding
Chinese wedding expert.
All right.
Well, all right.
So I've been to my fair
share of Chinese weddings,
both mainland weddings,
northern, southern, Fujian.
I've been to a lot of them.
Yeah. And popular dude.
And I'm like a professional best man.
So that's true.
He said he's certified to what?
I can I can actually marry people.
Yeah, he can actually marry people.
Oh, you're ordained?
I'm ordained, yes.
Of course, nowadays,
ordained doesn't mean anything, right?
Except for a certificate online.
But yeah, technically I'm ordained.
And I have performed ceremony before, too.
Well, OK, so I think what she's referring
to is that in the south, right?
The southern China,
especially the Canton region.
OK, when you get married,
you have the, you know,
kind of like the American,
what American consider the groomsmen.
So the groom will have a group of guys
and then the bridesmaids
or the bride will have a group of girls.
So that's called the sister party.
Like the jie mei.
I see. OK.
So then what happens is that the guys,
they go and go to the girl's house,
the bride's house.
And the guy hasn't seen the bride yet.
I'll tell this point.
So they go to the bride's house.
Oh, this is arranged.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Not just that day.
Oh, just that day.
I got you. OK, OK, OK.
So basically the girls is in her house
with a bunch of bridesmaids.
And then the guy with the grounds of groomsmen
go to their house
and they try to pick up the bride.
But the sisters block them.
And so you have to do X, X, X, X, X, X
before you can get the bride.
Oh, it's like a game.
Oh, it's no game.
Oh, this is no game.
This involves a lot of cash.
No. Yeah.
You have to give the sisters a lot of cash.
I thought this was a joke.
Oh, it's no joke.
Wait, for real?
This is for real.
OK, so.
So the girls, I mean, it's fun,
but the girls are.
But the cash amount is predetermined.
It may or may not be predetermined.
Oh my God. OK.
So like I've been to weddings
where the girls are like
the girls will be like,
give us, give us, like, give us cash.
And the guy will be like, here's a dollar.
And the girl's like a dollar.
Is your wife only worth a dollar to you?
Oh man.
And then you see a lot of money come out.
And I think they get to keep that money.
And also they do everything they can
to keep the guy out the door
and give them as hard of a time as they can.
Oh, OK.
Then finally, if he gives enough red envelope money,
they open up the door, they go inside.
But no, you still don't get to see the bride yet.
My goodness.
Now they put like,
well, you either go inside to do this
where you're still at the door at this point.
They make the groom and the groomsmen
do the most ridiculous games ever.
I mean, I've seen like them say,
strip down.
And they're stripping.
And do a hundred pushups with that guy on your back.
Here, eat this wasabi sandwich.
I mean, literally it's a wasabi sandwich.
So this is all filmed?
This is all filmed.
OK, so it's like fun and games.
Oh, it's no fun.
I mean, eating wasabi sandwich.
Have you had a drop of wasabi before?
Well, I get this one for the girls.
This one for the girls.
But I'm saying like later on, you reflect on it.
You pop the VHS.
Oh, it's crazy.
I was thinking I could never do this.
And I mean, the worst ones I saw was,
I mean, the wasabi sandwich.
It wasn't like bread and wasabi.
It was like a layer of seaweed
and a chunk of green wasabi.
Imagine that.
I would have died.
I saw another one where, hey, drink this.
Oh no, what was that?
It was like one drop of Coke and then soy sauce.
Oh, my.
It was just like, oh.
I think for my auntie's one,
they made them like put like,
I don't know how many clothes pegs on their face.
Like just like clip them all over their face.
Wait, is there is there a website
where you can find common games?
Probably.
Probably, yeah.
Maybe we could just go to a wedding.
I'll bring you to my next one.
All right, guys.
So if you have any experience with, you know,
whether you're on the groomsmen's party
or the bridesmaids party,
tell us what's the most embarrassing
and ridiculous games that you've played.
Comment below.
Definitely.
