1. Lo Mein is stir fry egg noodles with meat and vegetables. The real Cantonese one is egg noodles with a bowl of soup on the side.
2. Beef and Broccoli is basically stir fry beef with broccoli and cover with brown sauce. You can’t find this dish in China because the broccoli that we know here is different than Chinese broccoli. And even with the Chinese broccoli, we don’t use it for stir frying beef.
3. General Tso’s Chicken is deep fried chicken and cover with a sweet and spicy brown sauce. Although the dish is named after General Tso in the Qing dynasty, I bet he never tried this dish, because it’s invented in NYC in 1977 by a Chinese American chef.
4. Sesame Chicken is deep fried chicken cover with sweet sauce and dazzle with sesame.
5. Orange chicken is also another deep fried chicken dish. I actually really enjoy this one from Panda express. They taste like KFC’s popcorn chicken cover with sweet orange flavored sauce.
6. Crab Rangoon is fried wonton skins stuffed with artificial crab meat and cream cheese. I remember someone asked me to make a crab Rangoon recipe and I had no idea what it is. It’s for sure Chinese American food because Chinese don’t normally eat any type of cheese.
7. Fried wontons, it’s similar to crab rangoon. Chinese normally steam or boil their wontons. It’s not usual for them to fry their wontons.
8. Fortune Cookies was invented in California by Japanese. 1989, fortune cookies were imported into Hong Kong and sold as "genuine American fortune cookies". I think they are the best thing. Although many times in Chinese restaurants, they only give fortune cookies to Westerners. Could you call this racist?
Hi guys, so today I want to talk about 8 Chinese food that Chinese people actually don't eat.
This sounds a little bit shocking to you guys, perhaps a little bit to me too,
because I actually do eat these dishes. So maybe after all I'm not that Chinese at all.
All right, so number one is Lao Mian.
Lao Mian is so popular everywhere in the U.S., like in all kinds of Chinese restaurants,
but the truth is the Lao Mian that we see here, like the stir-fried noodles,
is different than the Lao Mian in Canton. The Hong Kong one is noodles scooped out from the water,
on the side there is a bowl of soup. So they never stir-fry the noodles.
That doesn't call Lao Mian. And number two, it is that beef and broccoli.
Most of the people think that beef and broccoli is a Chinese dish,
but it is not. You can't find this in China because apparently the broccoli here in the
Western world is different than Chinese broccoli. They look completely different.
And even for the Chinese broccoli in China, they don't use it for stir-frying beef.
Number three is General Tso's chicken.
A deep-fried chicken covered in this sweet and spicy sauce, right? So if you go to China
asking for General Tso's chicken, you can't find it. It is true that this dish is named after
General Tso's from the Qing Dynasty, but I bet that he never tried this dish before. This dish
was actually invented in New York City in 1977 by a Chinese-American person here in New York.
And number four is sesame chicken. It is another deep-fried chicken and then with the sweet sauce
And number five is an orange chicken.
For me, that is another deep-fried chicken and then covered with orange flavored sweet sauce.
And it sounds like KFC popcorn chicken with this sweet and sour sauce. And somehow the
Chinese-American food here in the US has become a lot of deep fry, a lot of sweet and sour,
but in traditional Chinese food, it's actually not like that.
Number six is crab rangoon.
Wonton sheet deep-fried and then in the wonton sheet, it was stuffed with
fake crabs and also cream cheese. Did you know that Chinese people don't like to eat cheese?
So apparently this is not Chinese food.
All right, and number seven is fried wonton.
Yes, we eat a lot of wonton. We steam them,
we boil them, we eat them with soup and with noodles, right? But we don't fry our wonton.
So this is also another Chinese-American food that the real Chinese people don't really eat.
Number eight, my favorite one. What is it? It's fortune cookies.
Fortune cookies are not even Chinese-American food because they were actually invented by
Japanese. I love fortune cookies. Every Chinese restaurant when I go to, I ask for fortune
cookies. But did you know that Chinese restaurants, they wouldn't give it to
Chinese people who eat there because fortune cookies are for Westerners only. I have to ask
them for fortune cookies every time. I really like them. They taste so good, so crunchy,
and every time you get a little fortune. In China nowadays, you can probably also find
fortune cookies. Americans import fortune cookies into China and they call it genuine
American fortune cookies. All right, so guys, comment below and let me know if there's any
other Chinese-American food that you think Chinese people also don't eat. Let me know
and I'll see you soon. Bye!
