With the Bundesliga title race the tightest it's ever been since the three-point rule was
introduced in 1995 Bayern were looking to send a message in a top-of-the-table clash
with Union Berlin a side riding high after knocking Dutch giants out of Europe in midweek.
Bayern had to be patient but broke the deadlock as they drew first blood through Eric-Maxim
Choupo-Moting. They set the tone early, pinned Union inside their own half and reaped the rewards
with his ninth goal of the season. After breaking the deadlock the record tied holders then went
for the jugular before the break and they extended their lead when Kingsley Coman scored for a third
game in succession for the first time in his Bundesliga career. Four goals in his last three
games the Frenchman in fine form. The host dominance was then underlined further when a
combination of master and apprentice provided a third. Thomas Muller found Jamal Musiala who on
his 20th birthday gave the German record title holders a commanding and deserving 3-0 lead at
the break. Having muscled up little attacking threat in the first half Union tried to salvage
some respect on the scoreline in the second. Geraldo Becker opened the scoring when these two
sides met in the first half of the season but couldn't convert this chance on the hour mark
which was Union's best of the entire game. Instead the icing on Bayern's cake was the return of
Sadio Mane from injury. The Senegalese almost had a hand in the fourth only for Fredrik Roonove
to keep the scoreline respectable with one of his seven saves in the game.
Thomas Muller denied at the last but in a title race for the ages Bayern sent a message that
they're still the team to beat as they moved above Dortmund at the Bundesliga summit
thanks to their superior goal difference. 3-0 the final score.
