How young can kids start karate? Here at my school we start them at three and a half. We have a Little Dragons class which is three and a half to six year olds.
Some schools will start them at two years old, some schools will start them at five, six, seven... it all depends on the school and the instructor. Our class is a half hour long and we work on their motor skills, their concentration, self discipline, focus, respect and courtesy, which is the kind of things that we want to implant in their head for as they get older they need to use courtesy, respect, self discipline, focus. All those things are the most important part of the martial arts.
Out!
Touch!
Down!
Back!
Push Down!
Sir!
We also teach them motor skills. Motor skills are the key to everything. You know if you don't have good motor skills you're going to have a hard time. And you'll see that most kids that start karate at three and a half to four years old when they get a little older their motor skills are more advanced than other kids.
We also teach them self defense, some Jiu Jitsu, some boxing, kicking, blocking, punching, basically a good amount of knowledge that will make them a good young martial artist as they get older and get into the next classes.
