Planting A Large Barrel Planter

Planting up a massive barrel planter! I have always wanted to put together one of these big barrel planters but never did due the cost, but they went on clearance so here we go! In this garden planter I used several plants, some annuals, and just the one perennial. The Princess Purple Fountain grass is going to color so nicely in the sun, I can’t wait to see how dark it gets! Ornamental grasses are a great staple for fall gardens. They provide texture, movement, contrast and when the seed heads dry they give a metaphorical representation of fall, being the time of harvest. The Celosia and Rediculous Coleus are the biggest stand out plants I have used all year for annuals. The Coleus will probably need some more room but that won’t be an issue since I will be pulling the mum out in a few weeks and swapping it out with a large Kale of Cabbage. The ornamental pepper besides the Coleus shouldn’t do much growing so I think it will be just fine, especially when the mum is pulled. To keep things colorful when temps start to drop, I love using Alyssum and Calibrachoas. These plants for cool weather keep flowering and putting on a show even when the heat loving plants start stall. I will be doing more fall arrangements and once they are all done, I will do a separate video placing them and decorating for fall. I am really looking forward to doing a planter with all houseplants and tropical plants! Plants used in this video include:
