With fall approaching, it’s time to start thinking about planters to have outside through the winter months. I like having some evergreen plant interest in my garden but often become bored with what is typically seen around here like pines, spruces, needle foliage in general. With all of that in mind I decided to put together a planter that will provide four seasons of interest. The Autumn ferns, hydrangea vines and ivy are all evergreen to semi-evergreen here in my zone 6 garden. The ferns I’m using are the ‘Brilliance’ variety of autumn fern which is just slightly more colorful than the regular variety. I have grown these ferns in planters before and they did quite well, sometimes with a little defoliation, but it all grows back in spring so that’s not a big deal. Growing ferns and growing ivy in the home and garden is always fun and rewarding. Ivy is so easy to grow outdoors where I live, that will be a no fuss plant for years to come. I will likely pull the hydrangea vine next year and either train the ivy up a topiary form or put something else in the center that is evergreen and variegated. I have another spot in the garden I would like to use that vine for. Using variegated plants in the center of planters helps draw the eye back and create an anchor for interest with more subtle plants around them. Everything I planted here is easy to grow and will make for an excellent fall planter and winter planter. Winter container gardening can be limiting, but there are some options out there to keep things interesting. Everything used here could easily be modified for indoor use using different ferns. I also included a tropical option for this planter that I LOVE! I would love to use Stromanthe around the side of a begonia vine, that would be gorgeous! Using Stromanthe ( stromanthe triostar / stromanthe tricolor ) would also work for a houseplant arrangement and be a nice option for indoor gardening.
