Auxerre were looking to defeat Lyon in a top-flight affair for the first time in over a decade
when the two sides faced off at Stade de la Baie-de-Champs in the weekend's opening match.
The chances of doing so looked slim though, as last time out, Agier had extended their
domestic winless streak to 10 matches, after failing to beat the only side below them in
the table, Angers, who are in 1-1, as Matisse-Abelin missed a 93rd-minute penalty.
Auel, on the other hand, had hit a rich vein of form at a good time, keeping up their unbeaten
run in style by defeating high-flying Lens 2-1.
Here without captain and top goal scorer Alexandre Lacazette, however,
he limped off at half-time after scoring the opener during that win,
also remained without head coach Laurent Blanc, still recovering from illness.
Despite those absences, they would take the lead through Lacazette's replacement,
Moussa Dembele, whose header from Corentin Tolisso's right-wing cross found the net,
despite Guillaume Eteradu getting a touch to the ball.
That would be the highlight of a somewhat uneventful half.
Auxerre had been in such dire straits recently that a second-half turnaround
seemed unlikely, but he drew level six minutes after the restart.
The hosts winning a penalty when on-loan Bristol City youngster
Pannoa Massengo was brought down in the area by Sonali Diomande.
Up-stepped Gaetan Perrin, who was born in Lyon and began his career at his hometown club,
there was seemingly no added pressure as he put away the spot kick,
despite a big touch of the ball from Anthony Lopez.
Somehow squirming between the keeper's hands.
Incredibly, a second goal would follow just a couple of minutes later.
First a close call for Diomande,
just about preventing his night from getting worse still
by clearing what was heading towards being an own goal.
The resulting corner was nodded on at the near post by Nuno da Costa
into the path of Jubal, who applied the finish.
A Brazilian defender arguably at fault for Dembele's open-up,
but more than making amends, it's Heperto Posé in front.
Other than just sitting back to defend their lead,
it was the host who came closest to scoring next.
Scotland's Seriki Dembele with great work on the left,
before finding fellow substitute Gabriel Haim.
Turned nicely and fired a shot straight at Lopez.
closest OL came to an equaliser was from two set pieces.
First a corner that was headed goalwards,
fairly comfortably gathered up by Radu.
And then all hands to the pump, goalkeeper up in the dying seconds.
It was Lopez who challenged for the ball,
but it was the keeper in his designated position who came out on top.
Radu punching clear.
And that was that.
Posé hold on to claim their first victory in the league since late October,
as Lyon's hopes of salvaging European qualification from a four-season take a hit.
Their six-match unbeaten run in all competitions comes to an end.
