Good evening and welcome to the Sailing Melody News.
Today's headlines, Dad breaks a critical part of our boat rigging.
Actually broken.
Mum discovers that she's short.
Yeah, I'm just short.
I stand in a small metal box.
Look at that.
Now can you stand?
And Dad bleeds rust.
And he bleeds rust.
I bleed rust.
I'm Andy.
I'm Melissa.
And I'm Jack.
And together we're working on restoring our sailing yacht.
Some of you might think we're crazy taking on the challenge of restoring this boat and
creating a life less ordinary.
And we're sure there will be blood, sweat and tears, but it will all be worth it when
we embark on our epic adventure around the world.
Whoever goes up the top next needs to get some more water.
So we've got in mass drilling and these jammers are actually broken.
Fortunately I've got some new jammers and I'll be taking the ceiling down in the cockpit
in the pilot house to repair the metal work around the hatches.
I need to get longer legs.
Right, so let's figure out, that's jammed.
Let's just undo that.
Well that turns.
It's a Simpson Lawrence two billion year old capstan.
Yeah, I've got my gloves.
Yeah, I'm just short.
I'm just short.
No, no, I wasn't calling you Jack.
I was just telling dad that I'm short and it's a long way up on the bed.
Oh, stop, stop.
Well, it's just rope, isn't it?
Jack, can you get me a screwdriver or something?
What are you doing?
Pardon?
Gifting the anchor chain off Jack.
Oh, okay.
Yeah?
Lock end gone.
Well that's another option is to take the chain locker through a pipe down below the
front berth because that chain locker that's there, A, is very big for the amount of chain
that we've got and B, is very high and I like to have a chain further back and lower down.
So, you know, we could modify the forepeak somewhat by taking that, you know, that's
only a false bulkhead, it's only cosmetic, but moving it forward, creating a little bit
more length in the forepeak.
Oh, it's still.
Is it?
Yeah.
The whole bulkhead?
Yeah.
Is it really?
Yeah, yeah.
Wow.
Okay.
Yeah, I mean he did say that they were like steel watertight bulkheads.
I don't think that panel's watertight, but it wouldn't be difficult to do that, put a
seal around it and put a bilge pump in each compartment.
Proof of thought.
Jack's taking screws out of the panelling in the anchor locker because as you can see,
there is a hole, there's daylight.
So we're taking the panels off the inside of the locker and then we'll have to assess
the extent of the corrosion there, but it's not a massive patch.
No.
Do you want me to do that one?
Um, well.
Is it coming undone?
The screw?
Yeah.
I don't know.
Yeah, it looks like it's coming undone, doesn't it?
Yeah, it is.
Okay, good.
Keep going.
Good job, mate.
Hello, Jack.
Hello.
So this is the rust at the front here, but look at the thickness of the epoxy.
But you can see from here down, that metal's solid.
So the rust starts here and probably goes up to here.
So there's a patch kind of probably, I'm guessing, there, there, to there.
Yeah.
Mr. Pigeon has come to say hello.
Hello, Mr. Pigeon.
I've taken it back to where it's nicely adhered, but it's basically this bit at the front of
the anchor locker and the bit at the back in the lazarets.
And that's it.
The rest of the hull is sound as a pound.
So we're going to strip all of that paneling from the anchor locker, all the wooden framework,
rebuild new, rebuild it in steel, panel it out in plywood, and then make a proper sort
of anchor locker with drains to stop this happening again.
So while Jack carries on undoing the screws in the anchor locker, we're going to start
unloading the lazarets, get everything out so that we can start emptying the back and
assess the situation in the lazarets.
That's the biggest hole.
Um, but again, it's, it's not going to be too difficult to repair.
Can I work in there?
There's a nice place to stow in, Andy.
Yep.
That's where you can sleep when I'm around.
Whoops-a-daisy.
What is funny about whoops-a-daisy?
I don't know.
Have you never heard anybody say whoops-a-daisy before?
Only, um...
Only me?
No, on like kids' cartoons.
I don't know if that, is that, is that the bilge pump or the exhaust?
No, that's, that must be the exhaust.
I don't know.
You know when the water was coming out from the bilge pump, was it coming out of these?
Uh, yeah, I think so.
Then what's this then?
Not sure.
But if you look at the steel here, there's a bit of surface rust on it, but it's literally
just a tiny little bit.
Yeah, we need to treat ourself to a needle gun.
Yeah.
Put it on.
Stuntalist.
Ow.
What?
Stuntalist, huh?
Yeah.
Well, the plus side to owning a steel boat is that we're both really allergic to fiberglass.
Yeah.
So you might get metal splinters, but we won't.
I've always got metal splinters.
End up in a big hive.
I've been working with metal most of my life, and my hands are just mostly full of rust myself now.
I think my skin is mostly constructed of rust.
And he bleeds rust.
Huh?
And he bleeds rust.
I bleed rust, yeah.
There's a lot of iron in my blood.
From all the boats and cars and bits and pieces I've rebuilt over the years.
This being by far the biggest project I've ever taken on.
Woo!
What?
You fell over.
Right, Jack, do you want to come down into your new bedroom?
Although you might be on the other side.
You saw what bird?
Cattle egret.
A cattle egret?
Yeah.
Rare visitor.
A rare visitor?
Yeah.
Cool.
Hey, is that a spear though?
What?
No, that's a bilge pump.
A water soaker.
Careful, don't lean on that.
Sit on the edge of this, and I'll lower you down.
No.
No, sit.
I'm trying.
You're going to come down.
Stand with both feet on it for a start.
Right, then sit down on the edge.
Look at that.
Now, can you stand there?
Yeah, at the moment he's going to grow very quickly.
What's that?
That's the exhaust pipe.
How do you like your bedroom, Jack?
All these panels are in great condition.
All the metalwork's in great condition.
All the welding's in great condition.
It just needs a good clean-up.
This is not rotten through.
There's been some water sat on there,
so again, there's some surface corrosion.
But it's great.
Just one thing.
Can you make my bedroom a bit longer?
Yeah, we're going to take this panel out here.
I think it's going to be the other side.
It'll probably be the other side,
but we'll take this bulkhead out,
and then your stairs will be here,
but on the other side.
Is it in there?
Yeah, that's going to be your new bedroom.
That side or that side, we're not sure.
We've cleaned out the lazarette.
This is going to be Jack's new bedroom.
Do you want me to get in there?
Yeah, go on.
Head at this end.
Which end?
That end.
Okay.
Because that's going to be the standing headroom at that end.
Feet at that end.
Yeah, I can touch the exhaust.
Yeah, there you go.
Does anyone have a pillow?
So we'll have to do some reworking
of the steering connector
between the steering in the pilot house
and the steering out the back.
But this will work.
If he has it on that side.
If he has it on this side.
If he has the bed the other side, it'll be fine.
This side's bigger.
That side is bigger.
Don't quite know how,
because you would think that they would be the same each side,
but it certainly looks bigger on this side.
There you go.
That's your new bedroom.
Don't worry.
We will make it a bit nicer than it is.
Maybe.
We'll hang you a little plant in the corner.
Right, come out carefully.
Don't hurt yourself.
Transom's good.
Need to just clean up.
Hall's good.
That's that little pinhole
that you can see from the outside.
Another thing.
I might cut out this bit,
but the structure's good.
All this steel is solid.
Really pleased.
Not sure what that is.
Oh, it's a bilge pump.
There you go.
That there is a bilge pump.
It's not fair to do Welsh words.
We either do Welsh Scrabble
or English Scrabble.
We can't mix it up.
I think that's cheating.
Is that cheating?
Or can you mix up?
Do people play bilingual Scrabble?
Bilingual Scrabble?
I don't know.
I've never played Scrabble.
Where do I have to start?
You start with one of the letters
that you've got on the board, Jack.
One of those letters.
What's the word that you want to spell?
Tail.
Tail?
So have you got a T, an A and a L?
No, have you got a T?
Have you got a T on your board?
Thanks so much for watching
