Kristian Stensmyren was born in 1892,
started in the pottery class in 1911,
and started his own pottery workshop at home on Stensmyren in 1918.
From materials that grow wildly in Norway,
we use saws, axes, vines, longs and hedges.
As hedges we have the most use for annual funds,
since they are without side branches.
When the harvest comes in May, we can start.
The work can be done on newly harvested materials.
The easiest way is to pull the twig through a similar cut as shown here.
The materials can be used for shingles.
Do we cut the twig in three or four?
Cutting can take place on hard or dry material, depending on the need.
The cut is three or four parts, which is made in half.
In the top part of the twig, a cut is made that corresponds to the twig,
and the twig is pressed down in the cut.
The material should be used to make shingles, both wet and dry.
Nils Holkenstad has worked at the workshop for over 40 years.
Here he makes a square vehicle.
We get the shingles even and thin when we pull them through a shingle.
To get thin shingles, we pull them through the shingle several times.
The shingle knife can be regulated.
The material that is used the most now is polycarbonate steel.
This is steel that has been refined and hardened on larger plantations.
This is the beginning of the bottom.
We take three long sticks and place them in the middle.
The long sticks are two-thirds the length of the long sticks.
The sticks are placed in between the long sticks.
The long sticks are wrapped together with a string,
and with an appropriate distance between the long sticks.
The short sticks must be broken before they begin to work.
The first hit is placed over two and under one.
Later, a pile is placed over and under.
After each hit, the long sticks are broken from each other.
In the opening between the long sticks and the short sticks,
two sticks are placed on the corner.
To make the bottom large enough, a turn is made.
The bottom is finished with a turn with two sticks.
These are placed alternately around each other.
Yes.
The bottom is finished with a turn with three sticks.
The long sticks are placed on the corner,
so that they can be easily inserted into the bottom.
After each hit, the short sticks are tied together.
Later, they are held together with a rope.
The long sticks are placed on the work surface with a saw.
The first turn of the long sticks is made with four sticks.
One starts with the top, and is placed in front of three and behind one.
To make the long sticks firm, tight and strong,
the sticks are hit together with the bench nails.
This technique that we use now is called shearing.
All sticks come with the root down towards the bottom,
and are screwed over each other, one in front of the other.
The shearing is still not high enough.
Now we move on to a technique called slitting.
One and one stick are used.
One starts with the root behind a stick,
and puts the whole stick out at once.
Each new stick starts a stick further forward.
One continues until the shearing is just right.
Before we finish with the edge,
a stick is placed with four sticks,
in front of two and behind two.
We start by laying the edge, and put down five sticks.
We put down behind two and out.
When we have put down five, we take it first,
lay it down, put it in front of four and behind one.
The next is put down next to the other.
We do this until we have five pairs next to each other.
Now we take the front stick of the back pair,
and put it in front as usual.
The next is put down next to the other.
We continue until the edge is finished.
Now the shearing should be finished.
It is very important that the shears and ends are nicely finished,
so the shearing does not tear anything apart when it is used.
Now the shearing is finished, and it has a handle.
The handle is made of two long sticks.
They are put down on one of the shears at the right distance.
The higher one is bent and put down under the shearing,
bent at the right handle height.
The part of the stick that comes into the shearing is turned,
and put down.
The other one is turned and twisted around the handle,
back and forth.
Now the first twisted stick is put down,
and twisted around the handle in the same way.
The shearing is finished.
Now the shearing should be finished,
under with two sticks of three.
