The Wild Weather and Wild Horses of Colorado // CtW S1:E10

Horses are majestic. If you’ve ever wanted to see them in the wild, plan to head out into the open spaces of the Sand Wash Basin in northwest Colorado. With over 750 horses scattered across thousands of acres of BLM land, you can spend all day trekking through the dirt roads and paths in search of the horses. They are like celebrities, when you see them, as each one has a name and is often featured on a Facebook page that provides updates on their herd.

In this episode we continue our time in Colorado by stopping in the town of Longmont, between Denver and Boulder. Our truck was due some regular maintenance and we also worried that our rear suspension could use some attention. So one week prior to our arrival we scheduled an appointment with a Ford diesel mechanic we hoped would get us quickly fixed and on the road without worries. However upon our arrival we found that the shop was overbooked and could not help us. They referred us to another shop which, by chance, not only had the availability for us but also had very specific expertise in making the repairs we anticipated making.

Three days in Longmont turned into over a week as simple repairs turned into larger, more costly ones. Fortunately we were able to camp nearby at the Boulder County Fairground and ride our bikes around town. We learned that Colorado can also experience some pretty extreme weather as we waited for the repairs!

Ultimately we left Longmont after a long week and headed northwest in search of the wild horses of the Sand Wash Basin. Lindsay’s love of horse and our shared passion to get off beaten path took us to the dirt roads and open spaces where the horses are scattered in the desert. A day wasn’t enough, but we were eager to move north into Wyoming and put it on our list to return to the wild horses one day!
