In today's video I am planting a 30 inch container that will spend summer through winter on my front porch and spring time in the backyard. The purpose of this planter was to give some evergreen interest for those times of the year when plants are sparse. For 4 season interest I am using a Bracken's Brown Beauty Magnolia, Autumn Carnation Azalea, Dolce Silver Gum Drop Heuchera and Primo Peachberry Heuchera from Proven Winners. For spring color the Belarina double buttercup Primulas, Snow Princess lobularia and the purple lobularia will brighten things up. Growing Primulas can be a bit tricky in hot climates, where I live they will need to be moved out of this container garden and into the shade garden for summer. I originally set out to do a spring themed planter, but in the long run I will be more pleased to have this planter done up with perennials with some space in the front that can be changed up by adding a few colorful annuals. I will likely be adding some creeping jenny to cascade over the front in a few weeks and it will look nice spilling down from under the alyssum. Primulas and alyssum make excellent cool weather annuals for spring and fall. The alyssum does well spring through fall for most, and it is worth growing even if you only get a couple seasons out of it because it smells amazing! But really, they should grow fine in most climates spring through fall, needing a hefty prune mid summer, but that is true of many trailing annuals. Oh! I almost forgot about the Variegated Sweet flag grass! They are easy to grow, sometimes evergreen depending on your winters and add whispy, airy texture wherever planted.
