Michael Shellenberger says that "the initial impetus to get people into psychiatric hospitals was very humanistic," adding that "treatment of the mentally ill has always been extremely difficult." Shellenberger says that at one point, the US "started literally dumping people from the psychiatric hospitals onto the street," leaving many without the care they desperately need.
