Well it took almost a full week to get it done, but here we are! Things started off too cold to plant, then it warmed up, but rained off and on for a few days. In the little bits of dry weather I managed to get a garden bed planted up and a croton plant faux planted and fertilized. I wanted to use a mix of tropical plants with tropical look-a-like plants that would be perennial here in my zone 6b garden. Cold hardy tropical plants like the colocasias, lemon coral sedum, chinese fan palm, tradescantia, gingers and cannas add a lot of exotic appeal but have the rewarding appeal of returning every year. Cold hardy tropical plants survival is largely dependent on being situated properly, appropriate soil and winter protection. Everything here will be mulched heavily in winter. I combined chinese fan palms with cordyline fruticosa ( ti plants ) around a queen palm that is faux planted in the center of the bed. I also planted some Hilo Beauty variegated elephant ears around the base of the palm. Behind everything a wall of canna phaison (tropicannas) will come up providing a wall of colorful contrast with orange flowers that the pollinators love. In the front there is a row of various colored sunpatiens / sun impatiens with some beautifully fragrant purple wave petunias. Finally Lemon Coral Sedum was alternated with tradescantia / setcreasea pallida aka purple heart plants. Both of these plants will grow well here and fill out wonderfully. I transplanted a couple of ostritch ferns and will be doing the same with some ginger lilies (hedychiums) and crinum lilies. Before doing any of this is prepped the planting bed by amending the area with a compost rich garden soil, some sand and gypsum. For me, next to planting up the garden bed, my highlight for the week was getting a new gorilla cart!
