I cannot believe this! Honestly, I made French onion soup. Hi guys, Lauren Magenta here and
welcome back to my kitchen. I am so excited for this episode of You Can Cook That because we are
diving into an easy homemade French onion soup recipe. This is a soup that is rich and delicious,
powerful flavor, and honestly it's kind of easy to make. So here we have a quarter of a cup of
butter melted. I just added a teaspoon of white sugar and now I'm going to bring in our onions.
The recipe calls for three medium onions. I use two large onions. It takes about 10 minutes for
these onions to cook down. I like to make sure that even at the start I spread the butter around.
I get them all coated nicely and we are looking for golden brown onions here.
All right, let's check on our browning. Look at that! The pot is loving it. Don't forget to scrape
down all those brown bits. We'll go with water first. We have two and a half cups of water.
I almost bought cooking wine, guys, but I just thought I wanted every ounce of flavor I could.
I am using a delicious red wine in here. You want a half a cup of red wine. And last but not least
for the broth, we have beef broth. It's two ten and a half ounce cans of condensed beef broth.
Okay, so we're going to mix it up. So now that everything's in here, I'm going to reduce
the heat to low. I'm going to put the top back on and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
Oh baby, look at that! I wish you could smell that. It's honestly not fair that you can't smell that.
So after the soup boils, it goes into the oven. So 425. Look at these onions. Look at that deep,
rich flavor. Okay, so I don't want to overpour and personally I'm using slightly smaller ramekins
than the recipe calls for. So here we go. Oh my goodness, almost perfect. So we fill up all of
these ramekins and then we top them with a toast and a cheese. Okay, so these crispy, crispy toasts
are gonna go right on top. Oh my goodness, floating like perfection. And we're gonna take
a piece of cheese here. All right, now call me crazy. I don't know about you guys, but
this is such an ideal part. I'm going to do two slices on each one. Some people actually even use
two different cheeses and these will go into the oven for about 10 minutes until the cheese starts
to melt and get a little brown. Look at these babies! My goodness, look at my french onion soup.
So you see here, maybe I had a bit too much broth in. It kind of bubbled up and brought the cheese
down, which let me be frank with you, that's going to be absolutely delicious. Having the stringy
cheese in the hot soup, it's still bubbling. These pieces are super crispy. This one actually has a
bunch of the cheese that fell over the side. Let me tell you, if you haven't had french onion soup
before, as this cools, you'll be able to pull that cheese off. Guys, my mouth is seriously watering.
You'll be able to peel that cheese off. It will be absolutely delicious dipped in the soup.
Oh, the quality of the bread. High quality bread. It is still in there. I literally am pulling out
my spoon and it is a full piece of bread. It hasn't broken apart whatsoever. So rich in flavor. Okay,
guys, a couple things I want to point out. Quality of the bread. You need high quality bread. I used
a french baguette. It was crispy. I toasted it up. It's holding itself really well and yet soaking up
the cheese is stringy. You want to use the right cheese. There are tons of options. Today we used
Swiss. And last thing I want to call out, confidence in the kitchen. Take your time with each step.
If it says 10 minutes, but you know in your heart that the onions can go longer or could simmer a
bit more, let it go for 12. Let it go for 15 because you can cook that. You can do it. You
can try these new recipes and have fun in your kitchen because look at me. I'm like jumping for
joy that I just made homemade french onion soup for the first time. I am gonna go enjoy my soup.
You can cook that. I will see you on the next episode. This is literally what french onion soup
does to me. I have to wear these goggles or I cry the entire time.
