Melchor López Jiménez
(Hueva, 19 January 1760 - Santiago de Compostela, 19 August 1822)
Spanish composer. At the age of 9 years old he moved to Madrid to live with his paternal uncle, where he spent his childhood and youth. He entered the 'Colegio de Niños Cantorcicos de la Capilla Real' where he studied music until 1784 with, among others, José Lidón, organist of the Royal Chapel. From 1781 he competed for some posts in Spanish cathedrals such as Plasencia, Ávila, Burgo de Osma and finally Santiago de Compostela, where on March 23, 1784, he obtained the post of chapel master, succeeding Buono Chiodi, with the dignity of canon and a good staff of singers and instrumentalists. There he remained for almost forty years dedicated to the proper tasks to his position: teaching the choirboys, composing music for worship in the cathedral and directing the chapel and the orchestra during the celebrations. In 1794, he came back to Madrid due to the death of his father. In Madrid he come into contact with classicism, so different from his late-baroque training, and which had become firmly established in Madrid (including Haydn and Mozart) in the ten years that López had been in Santiago. This experience completely transformed the style of his compositions from that time on, performed according to the strict canons of classicism, as was evident in the great 'Misa Solemne de Difuntos' (1799), which became a fixture for the funerals of canons and kings. Melchor López died in Santiago on August 19, 1822. #ClassicalMusic
