In 1984, British singer Phil Collins gathered over ten singers to record the song "Do They Know It's Christmas" to raise funds for African famine victims. The news of food shortages and hunger in Ethiopia and Sudan at that time also shocked Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Together, they co-wrote this song. In 1985, Michael Jackson called upon 45 singers to come to the A&M Recording Studio in Los Angeles and spent one night recording "We Are The World".
