Is this the end of Ronaldo's career? On 20th October 2022, we saw something that
left all footballing fans in the world in shock. Cristiano Ronaldo has called on, by his manager
Eriksen Haag, to come on as a substitute when Manchester United were leading two goals to
nil against Tottenham Hotspur. Cristiano Ronaldo thought he could get away by showing a dominant
display of power against his manager, but unfortunately for him, Eriksen Haag is no
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick. The Dutch manager banned Ronaldo from training with the
first team for two weeks. The club also decided to fine Ronaldo's 14-day salary. With only two
goals at this point, is this the end of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United? For starters,
Ronaldo's return to his Manchester United career was great, wasn't it? He scored 18 goals in the
Premier League and 6 in the Champions League. He scored a hat-trick against Norwich and Tottenham,
as well as goals against Arsenal and Chelsea too. He was on the top of his game and ended the season
winning the Player's Player of the Year award at Manchester United for 2021-2022 season.
There were speculations that his playing form combined with his strength in the dressing room
might see him taking the captain's armband from Harry Maguire. The fans loved Ronaldo to the bone,
pundits applauded for his amazing performances and we thought that Cristiano Ronaldo is far
from finished. However, the summer transfer window was shocking for the Portuguese and his reputation.
Due to Manchester United inability to finish in the Champions League, Ronaldo and his agents went
out to find himself a new club that is contesting in Europe at the highest level so that Portuguese's
record in the Champions League remains stable. Now, one would think that Cristiano Ronaldo of
all people should easily find suitors for himself with clubs all over Europe lining for his signature.
To Jorge Mendes' disappointment, that was not the case. Cristiano Ronaldo was rejected by every
club in Europe starting from big clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid to
smaller clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Napoli. All hell broke loose when Ronaldo's former club
and sporting CP itself reject Ronaldo with rumors that the manager has threatened to resign if the
signed back Ronaldo. Truly astonishing. Bayern Munich director Oliver Kahn said that while he
considers Cristiano as one of the greatest football players ever, Bayern came to conclusion that
despite appreciation for Cristiano, he would not fit into the philosophy in the current situation.
Atletico Madrid's footballing director had similar thoughts where Enrique Cereso clarified his club's
situation saying that I don't know who invented the story of Cristiano Ronaldo but it's practically
impossible for him to come to Atletico de Madrid. Rumors had it saying that half-ranking also
advised Thomas Tuchel to not proceed towards signing Cristiano Ronaldo despite new Chelsea
Todd Bowley pushing his manager to buy one of the all-time greats. So the questions arises.
Why would no football club playing in the Champions League want to sign a 24-goal
forward for them? The answer lies in future football planning and squad building which is
something team like Manchester United are poor at organizing. While it is understandable that
will get you goals, it is said that he is overall considered to be a net negative on his team's
style on and off the field at his old age of 37. The first part is that Ronaldo's off-the-ball
work rate is disappointing which affects the total intensity of applying pressure to your
opposition. Football is a collective work and all 10 outfield players need to press together in
order for win the ball quickly. It was very evident that Ronaldo at his age cannot comply
with the high pressing demands in modern football. For the 2021-2022 season, he had the lowest
amount of pressure per 19 minutes which speaks why clubs who practice hardcore Jengen pressing
such as Bayern and Chelsea did not opt for buying Ronaldo. Secondly, we need to realize that in
football there are good and bad moments and when the curse hits the fan, Ronaldo's influence in
There are many rumors that it was in fact Ronaldo who started the campaign to overthrow Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer from his managerial seat at Old Trafford. The signs of Ronaldo's unhappiness were
evident every time he was substituted or benched. He did not like the idea of being rested or taken
off putting the manager's power in question. Ronaldo is a huge player and a big ego which is
not easy to manage and almost any manager in the world can fall prey to his power and continue to
lose their dressing rooms such as Ole Solskjaer and Ranjik did. The third reason why clubs preferred
not to sign Ronaldo in the summer is because he is very hard to coach. Ronaldo played all his career
at the left wing however at this age he is demanded to play number nine as the main
center forward sticking in the box showing his movement and goal scoring ability. Unfortunately
Ronaldo plays like he wants to play and prefers dropping deep to get touches of the ball. He wants
to carry dribble and shoot from distance which is something he cannot do at this age due to the loss
of technicality. When dropping deep he leaves the box vacant with no bodies for the crossers to aim
at further producing a more tactical challenge for the manager. Cristiano is one of the greatest
players of all time but in order to continue playing more in his final years as a football
player he needs to calm his hunger down and be patient approaching teams and opposition. He still
has the most important skill despite his flaws which is goal scoring. We hope Ronaldo has a
cracker of a world cup and proves everyone wrong. Do you think this is the end of Ronaldo's career?
