The Woman Growing a Garden to Feed the Elderly
Meet Debbra Arndt, the woman growing a garden to feed the elderly in her neighborhood. At the age of 4 she was abandoned at an orphanage. She remembers going to bed hungry because there wasn't enough food for all the children. She went through 14 foster homes as a kid, and at the age of 16 she was on her own. She survived through help of total strangers, to find food to eat and places to sleep. Now, for the last 25 years, she has been growing fresh vegetables and fruits and giving it to the elderly and homeless in her neighborhood. She has raised beds in her small yard with over 500 plants, and sells her own homemade pickles, jams, and salsas to raise money to help her neighbors in need. Most of the people she feeds are over 80 years old and have no family. Around the United States, many elders go hungry and are forgotten, many receiving only $16.00 a month in food assistance- which just isn’t enough to eat healthy food. She says “I may have a small yard, but you would be amazed how many people can be fed.” Debbra may be a small part of the global problem of hunger, but she means the world to her community. She invites you to help the elderly with her.
