I haven't had a proper bench vise since I had my old shop. A company called Grip-On sent out these lockable pliers (vise grips), as well as a hands free mounting kit that essentially turns the pliers into a portable bench vise.

I was very impressed with them! The hands-free kit was very stable. The Grip-On lockable pliers were extremely sturdy. All of the various pliers they sent me were quite good. They're epoxy-coated and easy to use.
