Better Than Fertilizer! Reviving Old Potting Mix on Houseplants || Compost & Mycorrhizae
Today is the first day of meteorological spring and I'm ready to get to kick spring garden chores! One of the first things I like to do when bringing my houseplants outside for the season is supplement their potting mix. Over time potting soil natural has some nutrient depletion. To combat this and extend the time between needing to repot my plants I go through everything and work various forms of organic matter, mainly compost into the surface of the soil. I also add a fungal and/or bacterial supplement to help break down that compost and build stronger roots on the plants. Mycorrhizae is extremely important for a healthy root system, which will also lead to a healthier plant. Espoma biotone starter, plant tone, garden tone etc all work very well. Any slow release organic fertilizer that has a good amount of beneficial fungi and bacteria will do just fine. I like to think of it as feeding the soil, not necessarily feeding the plant. The healthy soil is what leads to the plant being well fed by the symbiosis around the roots with the good fungi and bacteria. I know there is a lot of debate as the whether or not compost is fertilizer, just go with it. It is different from liquid quick feeds. That's the point, and I will always say that compost is better than fertilizer.
