Antonius (Anton, Antonín) Swoboda [Svoboda]
(Sobotka, 21 January 1709 - c.1746)
Bohemian composer. He entered the Jesuit order aged 19 (on 9th October 1728) in the nearby Jíčín. He completed the first year of his novitiate in Brno (1728-1729), the second (1729-1730) – probably in Prague’s Collegium Clementinum. Where he had received his earlier education is unknown, but notes in Brno’s Jesuit catalogues indicate that he already had some musical competence at that time. Subsequently he resided for more than a decade (1730-1740) in Olomouc, where he completed his studies, taught the early years of gymnasium, and began his preparations for the holy orders. In Olomouc, he held the functions of preacher, catechist, and in the last year – also that of praefectus musicae. Antonius Swoboda completed the last probation in Telč (1740-1741). In 1741-1742 he is listed as praefectus majorum et musicae at the convictus (in seminario) at Prague’s Collegium Clementinum. Later (1742-1744) he stayed in Wrocław, where his numerous duties included supervision of the Jesuit convictus choir. Afterwards the composer was active in Kłodzko (1744-1745) i.a. as a praefectus chori. In the following year we no longer find his name in Jesuit catalogues. Some authors suggest that Antonius Swoboda died on 27th January 1746 in Nysa. Such an interpretation, however, can be refuted since in the handwritten Supplementum Catalogi [...] Provinciae Bohemiae ad Annum 1747, under the heading Ex Societate Anno 1746. dimissi sunt we read: “P. Anton. Swoboda scholastic(us) approbat(us), dimissus Nissae 27. Januarii.” Thus, on that day the composer did not die, but was dismissed from the Society of Jesus. Another confirmation of this is the fact that no person of such name is listed in the catalogues of Jesuits who passed away in 1746. The reasons for Swoboda leaving the Society of Jesus are unknown. The available documents show that his predispositions had been assessed positively, and his abilities – as higher than average. Unfortunately we have no data concerning his life after 27th January 1746, nor do we know the actual date of his death. #ClassicalMusic
