
The Manchu People - History from Beginning to Present

The Manchus are a Tungusic East Asian ethnic group from Northeast Asia's Manchuria. They are an officially recognized ethnic minority in China and are the source of the name Manchuria. The Manchus, who are descended from the Jurchen people who established the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) in northern China, established and ruled the Later Jin (1616-1636) and Qing (1636-1912) dynasties of China.
Manchus are the largest branch of the Tungusic people and are spread throughout China, constituting the country's fourth largest ethnic group. They can be found in 31 different Chinese provinces. The largest is Liaoning, with over 100,000 Manchu residents in Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, and Beijing. Liaoning has half of the population and Hebei has one-fifth. There are over 300 Manchu towns and townships in China, including Xinbin, Xiuyan, Qinglong, Fengning, Yitong, Qingyuan, Weichang, Kuancheng, Benxi, Kuandian, Huanren, Fengcheng, Beizhen and over 300 Manchu autonomous counties. Manchus are China's largest minority group without their own autonomous region.
