Puss in Boots by Jerry Pinkney - Bedtime stories for kids
"Puss in Boots" is a picture book of the fairy tale genre by Jerry Pinkney, which will be read aloud to us today. Based on one of the most famous fairy tales by French author Charles Perrault, "Puss in Boots" is one of the most beloved fairy tales, even though the story was written three centuries ago.
The origin of the "Puss in Boots" story dates back to the 1550s when the European Giovanni Francesco Straparola compiled the story in his novel. Then, in 1634, Giambattista Basile recounted it in his book Cagliuso, and finally in 1697 Charles Perrault gave it a new life in his book Mother Goose Tales.
The narrative starts with a miller's unexpected passing and the subsequent unequal division of his possessions among his three sons.
While the eldest son gets the mill and the middle son inherits the donkey, the youngest son is given a family cat, who had previously only been kept around to take care of vermin.
Fortunately, the youngest son realizes this is not an ordinary cat. He quickly provides the boots his cat demands once he finds that he has a talking magic cat. After being dressed appropriately, the "talking cat in boots" sets out to make his master's fortune by pulling off a number of cunning heists. The miller's son ends up obtaining the title of Marquis and receiving a princess's hand in marriage thanks to a series of the Puss's clever tactics, which include a complex plot to fool the king.
"Puss in Boots" is a children's book that appears to be a lot of fun. But if we study it carefully, we will see a moral aspect: if success is attained rapidly by dishonesty and lying rather than through hard work and talent, it would not be the right way.
"Puss in Boots" also helps us learn one of life's most important lessons: there are moments we must allow others to assist us in moving forward. Accepting assistance from others is a good idea because not every issue can be resolved on our own.
