Conference here on ESPN.
It's the Memphis Tigers at 11-3 on the season,
1-0 in conference play.
Taking on Ron Hunter and his Tulane Green Wave
at 7-5, 0-1.
This is going to be a fun one here in the Big Easy.
Black Tulane comes out wearing the home white.
Memphis wins the tip.
Happy New Year, everybody.
Let's get ready for some college basketball.
Jayden Hardaway back into the lineup.
He missed the last two games with a hip injury for Memphis.
That is a huge addition for this Tiger squad.
Kendrick Davis, your reigning American Conference
Player of the Year.
He's been a facilitator and a scorer.
Can't finish on their first shot for Memphis.
Into the starting lineup.
His first three was halfway down.
Yeah, they looked to score.
He was 50-50, was in a walking boot yesterday.
He's dealing with an ankle injury, his left ankle.
Yeah, he's important, too.
He's kind of the Jamal Crawford in this group.
He's a bucket getter.
There's Williams inside.
The mid-range game goes.
There's our first bucket for Memphis.
De'Andre Williams is a guy.
You see Memphis early on, limiting second chance.
Williams dumps it inside.
Roll it off to Catton.
His shot no good.
But I like the pace we've got.
It's up and down.
There's going to be a lot of scoring opportunities.
And Memphis just has to do a good job of not fouling.
They're going to foul, but you don't want it
to be the little chippy handshakes.
What a pass by Forbes.
Finds Cross for Tulane's first bucket.
Yeah, he did the little goggles at the end.
He's allowed to do that.
That was a great pass.
Forbes sets the fee and nails the three.
Pace and Memphis.
It is amazing.
Forbes was in a walking boot.
He did not practice yesterday, and here he is nailing the three.
Davis off the mark from downtown.
Crossover penetrating floater.
No.
Erased the bucket.
Offensive foul, and that's huge.
I needed you to say it first, so don't mess it up.
He'll be known as KO.
That's what he says.
Forbes, his second three, a little short.
A slow shooting start here for the first game of the new year.
But a nice take to the bucket by Elijah McCadden.
Yeah, that's the best opportunities,
particularly for Memphis.
Trying to establish Pope inside.
Cross nails a three.
If he knocks down that shot, that is huge for Tulane.
He's really, I think Memphis.
Memphis is going to slop it up, and they'll find it.
Somehow they find it.
Every single game, they get down to UCF,
they find it, and they win the game.
They make plays like this.
There's DeAndre Williams, and he lays it in.
Cuts the lead to two for Tulane.
Yeah, and this gives him some looks,
some driving kick looks, good rhythm shots.
Kendrick Davis draws contact.
Kendrick Davis yesterday in practice,
and I asked him just why the transfer to Memphis,
and he said simply looking at the defense
and figuring out what do they give me
and trying to change up my offensive game.
To start this game, the game's starting to find a little flow.
Let's see if the offenses can find it as well.
Cian James, cross court pass to RJ McGee.
He rips down the net.
That's good stuff.
Tulane with an early four-point lead here in this first half.
Kendrick Davis drawing all the attention for the defense.
Kennedy, a step back three, rattles in.
Rhythm dribble, and if you're a right-handed shooter.
Both teams shooting below 35%
from the floor to start this game.
That's Holloway, has it stripped away.
Memphis trying to push it.
Kendrick Davis in the corner, but it's out of bounds.
This is the dunk,
and a technical for hanging on the rim.
On the rim, it's not a personal foul.
Because the officials couldn't decide who had possession,
they went to the arrow, and it is going to be Tulane Ball.
I said lame for a reason.
I think we create all these rules to protect officials
that know how to get real with making this game fun again.
This game ain't going to be around that long.
He draws the foul against Trey Williams.
We have so many rules.
New Year's, St. John Christmas.
It teaches you how to play the game.
Even the worst player on the floor
learns how to make a shot clock.
I just hold it until the best player hits the ball.
The dumbest thing in the world.
Ted talk over, back to basketball.
Sorry.
Cross, spinning in the lane.
And he's going to draw the foul, and one.
Teams, tough dudes.
Cross does convert the three-point play.
He leads all.
Plenty of time on the shot clock at 14.
James trying to work against the smaller.
Lomax goes all the way.
Sion James playing bully ball.
Yeah, he could do that against DeAndre Williams, too.
I mean, physically, just so strong.
Some guys are just physically superior.
Sion James is one of them.
Good pump fake by Kennedy.
To that little rhythm dribble.
You go to the left.
You're already in your shooting part.
Chance of defense here in Tulane's own gym.
Doesn't matter.
Trey Williams, the Oregon State transfer, lays it in.
I'm having a tough time with this.
Oh, between the legs, trying to back down his main button.
Showing the moves, Tyler.
Too much to one guy, they rotate too much to one guy.
That long closeout's something you can attack.
But it takes some time to figure out.
Sometimes you figure it out by throwing it away.
Here's the double team.
Davis picks up his dribble, finds help.
Nine on the shot clock for Memphis.
Davis from straight on, nails the three.
Kendrick Davis trying to get going.
There's his first field goal he's got to flatten at times.
Cincinnati did that well.
They got the defense to flatten out,
and they created easy opportunities.
Sion James will try from deep, and he nails it.
All of a sudden, teams are not hitting three.
They're knocking him down.
In and out dribble.
Davis trying to go by his man in a reach-and-foul
called against Williams.
They're a very good team.
Davis rattles in the front end of the one-and-one.
Can I be real?
Because people that decide
who's in the top-coming freshman class,
they haven't done anything yet.
Let's just wait and see, but we don't value substance
as much early in the season, so go out and earn it.
I think it's a good thing for Memphis.
I mean, look at Memphis' body of work.
This is a top-25 team, no doubt.
No question.
Inside, McCaddy waits for the shot blocker to go by,
and Memphis down by one.
And I think it's a good thing that they feel
that it's going to earn everything they get this year.
I think it's a good thing for Memphis,
good thing for Penny,
who seems to be enjoying this group.
Sion James trying to go against Lomax again,
and that's a matchup Tulane loves.
Yeah, they do like that matchup.
Frankly, I would like that.
She's at Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
That would be really interesting to emotions
from a young group.
And you see the outpouring of love
from across the college coaching profession,
how respected he is.
His players loved him.
Yeah, it's just a horrible situation.
There's no way around it.
I mean, that's humbling for a lot of young kids
who haven't gone through something like that.
We approach six minutes to play here in this first half.
Tulane with a three-point lead.
Lomax with the teardrop.
Well, he brought it up. Nobody else touched it.
I mean, if Kendrick Davis does that,
you're kind of like, all right.
Lomax, sure, why not?
Man, three goes, Jalen Forbes.
Sometimes the game finds it, right?
The game finds a rhythm, and it took a little while,
but both teams are attacking quickly.
Look, this is good stuff.
From the penetration and the kickout,
Demaria Franklin, the transfer from Illinois, Chicago.
By the way, Forbes looks pretty good,
given he was in a boot.
I was watching him pregame, and it was highly taped up.
On the floor, look at Memphis getting all over it.
They've got numbers going, two on one.
Kendrick Davis takes it, and the...
Kendrick Davis does convert the three-point play.
Davis thought he was fouled.
Now ahead of the pack, this is RJ McGee,
and McGee will lay it in for Tulane.
This has been impressive on both ends.
Tulane has responded to the physicality from Memphis.
Memphis is going to continue to play this way.
Don't do it for 40.
Kendrick Davis, his pass cut off by McGee.
Playing with two fouls for Tulane.
With the push-off, and there's his third personal
of the first half.
And good defense coaxes you into that,
so as much as that's on Cook,
you've got to have the presence of mind,
got to have the awareness not to pick up that third foul.
He's clearly going to end up on the bench for quite a while.
That's also going to change what he can do
when he comes back in the second half.
That's the real...
Also, Memphis has been able to get that bottom-side,
back-side guy to lift defensively,
and that's going to open up that baseline.
De'Andre Williams is going to have that opportunity.
And Cross is playing with two fouls.
He had the back. Shot's going to be there.
He needs to get himself shot ready sooner.
Here's Williams going against James.
No call, and Williams is going to be fouled.
Looks like it was on hard games,
but he's going to win more than he's ever going to lose,
so I think I've got to ride with him.
De'Andre Williams put arms whether they like it
or they don't.
In the end, whatever.
Whatever you think about it, Williams finding a landing spot
that makes sense for them, that maximizes their potential,
and they help maximize the potential of the program.
James trying to penetrate.
He's going to be held by Chandler Lawson.
I'm going to be honest for a second.
I feel like with LSU,
we could start talking about them again.
Do it. That's a huge win.
That's a statement win to start a CC play.
The windows are wide open.
Memphis right now on a 10-3 run.
Williams will dump it off,
and the mid-range goes for Noble Days.
Noble Days is going to have some miscontribution.
Given the foul trouble, Cook and Cross both on the bench.
Williams gets the attention to kick it out,
and Sion James has called for the block.
That's how it is. That's the games they play.
It's not always pretty, but time in, time out.
Whether it was against Texas A&M or against UCF,
they're down, they find it
because they dictate the way the game's played,
and they make the plays down the street.
Will speak Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament.
James, his front end of the one-on-one, knocks it down.
Look at this Tulane team. They take a one-point lead here
as we approach a minute to play.
They have as Memphis and one against Houston
to show that they belong in the conversation.
Davis penetrating with Williams,
goes through the contact and finishes.
Tulane, under a minute, will call a timeout.
And quickly, and if you can get the defense
to extend and stay extended,
you should be able to score quickly.
If I was Memphis, I'd probably sit back
and let them take time.
Tulane in no hurry right now.
Space and attack.
Cross going against Williams.
We'll find the cutter.
All right, that's good stuff.
Now you're going to get the last opportunity
so long as you can secure a miss with a rebound.
We've had four ties.
That's the seventh lead change here in this ballgame.
The game hasn't always been pretty,
but 37-36, both teams starting to find some offense.
I look forward to the second half.
And McGee has two and Cross has two.
Cook's coming back in the game for this offensive possession.
Williams goes, one of two.
We're tied at 37.
Eight seconds to play in this first half.
Cook on the floor. He's got three personal fouls.
Trying to trap him. James out of control.
There's the steal by Williams.
The half-court heave.
We are tied at 37 going into the halftime break.
Starting a good, starting a new year.
Can we just say, too, this is a great little arena.
It is. I love places like this.
It's a shame the students are on break
and they can't pack this place.
Here's Hardaway.
Straight out of the break, his first jumper goes.
And they're both laughing at each other right now.
That's what we love.
College basketball, nothing like it.
See how James thought about it.
Saw the space and now will drain the three.
Lawson, a lot of dribble, picked up his pivot.
Now taken away by Forbes.
Cook wants it in the corner, but it's poked.
And he will draw the block.
It's just force a long close-out or a rotating defense
and then attack that advantage. The NBA does it, obviously.
But they just dribble into a ball screen,
get the switch, and then it's, he can't guard me.
Cross now spinning on Lomax.
Looks like they can guard him there.
Coming away with the steal.
Hardaway.
Williams in no man's land, trying to find a way
and pokes it home on the second attempt.
That's what he does.
Ain't no man's land is right.
He was on Davis and he will draw the personal on Kendrick Davis.
Doesn't force.
I think it's so easy when you're dealing with foul trouble.
You want to impact, be patient, but be aggressive.
That free throw was his first point of the game.
Here's Hardaway from the wing and he nails the.
Jayden Hardaway being aggressive here.
When the pace is high, you travel more.
It just happens.
They tend to let more go, too.
I'm more advantage basketball guy.
If you try to travel to create advantage, then maybe.
Cook with the teardrop rolls off the rim.
There's cross on the offensive glass.
He puts it home. He burst all.
You know, you're here to watch.
Kendrick Davis and Cook, two great offensive players,
and they change directions and change speeds
as well as anybody in the pressure.
Lomax finds the space and has the answer from three.
And Williams with another rebound.
That is his ninth of the game to go along with 13 points.
Williams trying to work one-on-one
when it comes to a jump stop fadeaway jumper.
Oh, man, that is tough.
I think, over time, that would favor Memphis
with the depth they've got.
In down is to Forbes.
Blooms in and takes it home.
He's just a baller, isn't he?
Like, there's just not a moment with that made three.
That kind of swings the game a bit.
In traffic, poked away by Forbes.
He's got McGee out in front, and McGee will finish.
McCadden creates some space and uses every part of that rim.
More east to west than you can north to south.
There will be times where,
if Memphis is able to sustain a lead,
Tulane's going to have to lift their defense.
That's where you're going to have opportunities.
Here's Cook trying to go to work.
Splits the defense, and that is pinned by two defenders.
Memphis trying to turn defense into offense.
DeMaurier-Franklin with the splish-splash.
Out here at Tulane.
Cook with a tough step-back three.
That was a hand in his face.
Williams with the breakout, and he throws.
He has the ear of Penny Hardaway,
and in moments, he comes up with good defensive plays.
Here's Sean James, and he shoots him out of the zone.
That's a big response,
but he's an incredibly well-respected coach
universally across the country,
so to have him on your bench with this group, too,
I think this group is a big part of that.
Frank Hay, they're still learning,
so it's great to surround yourself
with people that are on the floor,
somebody who understands the personalities,
how to manage personalities,
but also how to win competitive play.
Officiating crew is strong all day.
Yeah, I think this has been a very well-officiated,
not an easy-to-officiate game, but it had to be a travel.
Pope is going to be fouled going up by Keontae Kennedy.
Am I crazy?
I was like, this is a good five, just because of that.
So Pope goes one of two.
A two-point lead for Memphis.
Per se, you're in an area,
and that opens up offensive rebounding opportunities.
Here's Forbes with a quick release.
Jalen, you weren't sure
whether he was going to play in this game.
Saw him in a boot earlier.
He didn't practice yesterday.
In a boot over that left foot
because of an ankle injury he suffered against Cincinnati.
Franklin driving nowhere, James with the takeaway.
Here's Cook, one-on-one, up and under.
Jalen Cook with the pretty finish.
See if Memphis can kind of retake control of this game.
Davis will try from three, and he'll bury it.
Kendrick Davis has 15.
James, corner pocket, three.
Davis, he is tripped.
And Kendrick Davis, man, he is.
It sounds really simplified, but it's what it is.
So Williams picks up his third as Davis.
And there really no absolutes when they do it.
The guy to kind of rally people together after that loss.
There's different forms of stabilizers.
There's emotional and social stabilizers.
There's in-game stabilizers.
He's a little bit of everything.
Jaden Hardo, the people playing the game.
I think fans often think that we want to see Team A
or Team B lose, because you see the people.
You see the stories.
It's less about the surface.
It's more about that side.
Approach, eight minutes to play.
Davis with the crossover.
Across the window, strong finish.
Wow, that is a tough finish.
He was on the floor with four fouls for Tulane.
Almost lost it there.
Defense is scrambling to pick him up.
Jalen Forbes flexing on him.
His three-point play, and he does.
And there's a part of me, and I will probably watch
some of the clips back.
...of Memphis forces you to foul at times.
I think they play such physical basketball
that you have to match that toughness.
Inside all alone as Lawson lays it in.
De'Andre Williams is...
Davis trying to deny him.
Shot clock is at five.
Cook has to give it up.
McGee takes a peek at the clock.
Mid-range jump for a call-up.
We see you, R.J. McGee.
Yeah, that was a great defensive play by Alex Lomax, too.
He showed help on Cook, but then got back and contested,
made it a tough shot, but McGee just made a tough shot.
Williams one-on-one with Cook.
Backed him down, turned away, and on the rebound,
they're going to call that one on Memphis' Lawson.
One.
Mr. Houston certainly puts you in the conversation.
Well, even in that game, Jalen Cook fouled out Cincinnati.
Well, you think about Cincinnati losing to Temple,
which if that's going to happen this year,
there are good teams there.
In America, there's just not enough
consistently good teams.
Williams trying to go one-on-one with James.
No shot. Foul is on the floor.
I'm not sure if that's much on Seahawks' James.
He took the brunt of it.
Somewhere out there, someone's yelling ball to him.
So Tulane with a three-point lead,
Memphis shooting 65% from the free-throw line.
Kevin Cross bringing the ball up, too.
That's McGee.
Kendrick Davis trying to answer no good on the rebound.
It's Lawson.
Lomax calling for it from the wing.
Answers with a three of his own.
I feel like when we get scoring, we get scoring in bunches.
Trying to get around Lomax.
The runner in the lane too strong.
Gets his own rebound. Back up, and it rolls off.
This is Kendrick Davis' time.
Five minutes to play in the ballgame.
Williams, double-team.
Davis on Cook. They could have called the foul, and they do.
No bucket. Foul on the floor, but that was James.
Tonight is over. Five points, two of 12 from the floor.
Cincinnati, but a different kind of physicality here.
You've got to understand how important you are to your team
and find ways to stay out of foul trouble.
Trey Williams comes on.
He'll run the offense through Cross.
There's Seon James, and he's plus one.
James has picked up the scoring load for Tulane today.
That's something I'd like to see Tulane.
Teams are still figuring out who they are,
and Seon James is a guy who has emerged today.
Twenty-four and a great communicator defensively.
It's good to see him get a career-high offensively,
but he's impacted the game in a variety of ways,
and there's our guy, Trey Williams, again.
Off the steal. That is blocked by Davis.
By Daze, excuse me.
McGee trying to go one-on-one.
Forbes creating space and hits the top turn.
If he missed that, probably not a good.
But that's just who they are.
Pick and roll, and the roller was held.
Who do they call it on that one?
Just keep winning.
Also at the top of the key and allow him to make decisions.
And sometimes the cutters will open up the lane
and allow Cross to attack off the bounce.
So Cross has a matchup that's going to bring help.
Oh, yes, Franklin. He is dipping that shoulder.
Here comes the help from Williams,
and a foul on the floor.
Get help down there in the post.
You have McGee in the corner wide open,
but with four fouls, you've got to be careful against him.
He's been working the officials. He saw that.
Cross did dip his shoulder, didn't get called for it,
but Coach Hartwich is just going to plant seeds
and say, hey, keep an eye out for it,
and we tend to look for it.
Franklin, his three off the mark.
Pope will be fouled, a silly foul by Williams.
That is his fourth.
Tyler Pope hasn't had a hockey assist.
You get the hockey stick.
Nope, nope, not tracking that one.
So Pope goes 0-2 from the line.
Lead is still 4-4-20.
He's done a lot of that damage from the free-throw line.
Calling for the clear out.
This is Williams on James.
James goes down again.
Franklin with the run to the bucket,
and James will commit the foul.
It's interesting, James almost took himself out of the play,
and there was 24 by the time we got out of here.
They just shoot one free-throw throughout the game
until the final two minutes.
Williams trying to keep it alive, and there he goes.
Picked up his fifth.
I exaggerate a little bit, but you would say
you've got to figure out about this building.
It is so tough for opposing teams to play.
It's a great question, but this is a good basketball team,
and they're tough to figure out.
They play a matchup,
which forces you to adjust to the game.
They have multiple scores,
and they play with a lot of freedom.
Davis draws the contact.
He'll be shooting three, and he picks up the fifth on McGee.
So smart.
I meant to Penny, but it's a compliment
to the way Memphis plays.
They figured it out, and how you play
is your best recruiter.
If you don't play in a way that somebody
wants to transfer to and play,
then they're not coming there.
It's as simple as that.
Kendrick Davis is, yes, coming to be a part
of what Penny's doing, but also he trusts the product
that he's seen on the floor and had to go up against.
And look at him locking in on defense.
Davis has 22 points, 12 or 15 from the free-throw line.
Cross with four fouls, dumping it off Kylan Pope.
Cross is gonna have to be that guy late in game situations.
He's gonna have the opportunity to put it off the deck
and make the right play.
Davis with the crossover.
He'll find McCatt an extra pass inside.
That's Lawson no good.
A six-point lead for Tulane as we approach two minutes
to play in the ballgame.
And all this without Jalen Cook on the floor
out with the five fouls.
But Memphis with De'Andre Williams
on the bench with five fouls.
I like them playing through Kevin Cross.
Four cleans into the contact.
Can't get the runner to go.
And Lomax, Kendrick Davis going one on three.
Splits the D. How did he finish?
The speed burst from Kendrick Davis
and a quick timeout from Memphis.
Download the ESPN app.
A four-point game.
This has been a close one throughout.
Tulane trying to run this clock out.
10 seconds.
Coleman.
Jaden Coleman knocks it down
and Tulane has their largest lead in the game, up by seven.
And Tulane is starting to feel it.
Look, I still think they're that 13,
but now when you see what's happening here,
Redchap has less absolutes than most defenses.
Which means there's flexibility.
See on James, a career night, 28.
Davis with the dump off.
Nice reverse finish by McCadden.
Under a minute and a timeout, Tulane.
Ball put in the limelight here.
Inbound to James.
He will be fouled immediately.
They call that one against Jaden Hardaway.
That'll be his fourth personal.
If I'm-
Structure his practices.
He can't go his guys as hard as he wants to,
but they bring it for game time.
Yeah, and I like late stretch here.
You're going with Noble Days in there.
Kind of offense, defense, good rebounder.
Pump fake by McCadden.
Kendrick Davis, his three off the mark.
And that should just about do it.
Cross traveled, so it's not over just yet.
Ron Hunter's furious.
Davis wants the two, and a block is called on Noble Days.
Get yourself to the right spot.
And there's gonna be times where-
Davis makes them both.
The lead is down to seven.
They're looking for the home run pass with Forbes.
And Forbes is fouled hard by Lomax.
As Lomax-
He looks like that's the case for Forbes as well.
Forbes misses the second.
He's got 17 points for Tulane.
Lomax looking for a quick one.
That's a deep two, too strong.
Kick out is to Kendrick Davis.
There's that pump fake again.
The three, got it.
It's not over.
Penny's gonna take the time.
Trying to find somebody to get open.
Tulane playing keep away with Cian James.
And they do give up the foul on Forbes.
I give Coleman a lot of credit.
Temple's gonna get a lot of credit.
Memphis has found a way to get through that game.
Such an interesting conference.
Oh my goodness.
Especially when you have Houston
who is just in their own world right now, seemingly.
It doesn't mean they can't be beaten.
10 seconds to play.
Davis will take the two.
The lead is back to five, 8.2.
Lomax will give up the foul
and send Forbes back to the-
The big piece.
It just allows you to be different.
Allows you to be physical down low.
The good news about Dandridge,
he is out of that boot.
That he hurt his ankle in that Alabama game.
Expected back sometime in the next few weeks.
Davis' three is short.
And that'll do it.
A statement win for Tulane.
They get their first conference win here in the American.
96-89 over Memphis.
For John Crispin and our entire college basketball crew,
I'm John Schriffin.
So long from the Big Easy.
