What's up, Pea Nation? Today is number 4 on our Great Romanian Road Trip.
Today we are checking out the old town of Sigisora
and then we're traveling all the way to Alba Lulia to check out their famous citadel.
But first, we've got to get down the mountain and see the town.
Okay, and just like that we made it to the city center.
I don't know if we told you guys yet, but we are in Transylvania.
The whole time we were in Romania, I thought we were in Transylvania,
but Lia pointed out this morning that we actually weren't.
It's a region that we haven't visited until today.
So we are in Transylvania. We're going to show you this old town.
And this is how the clock tower works.
And these are the things that spin.
I think it's the different times of the month or the party when the clock goes off.
And we made it to the top. The view up here is so incredible.
This town is so adorable.
All of the roofs are really like what you think of when you think of Transylvania.
They're like spiky and they have like things coming out of them.
I don't know. It's just really, really, really incredible.
I knew this place was going to be really cute, but it's more than I expected.
Honestly, Sigisora is just a place where you go to see the town.
Every house is pastel colored.
Green, pink, orange, yellow. It is so absolutely adorable.
And they're so ornately decorated.
It's just really, really beautiful just to walk through.
There's nothing really else here other than just the town.
So as you just saw, we just walked up the staircase.
The scary, scary staircase.
It was probably the creepiest thing we've ever been in.
Yeah, but we got to like get in the Dracula mood, you know?
So now we're walking through a cemetery and some of the graves have like these holes in the middle.
Did they escape?
That has a stake in it.
Oh my god!
I may have mentioned this before, but I didn't know that Transylvania was a real place.
I thought it was just like this made-up land where Dracula and vampires existed.
But it's here in Romania and I just have this like sense of Halloween.
Halloween is also my favorite holiday.
So like I want everything to be really spooky, but it's not.
It's actually quite adorable.
Okay, we have made it to the bottom of the mountain.
Well, it's a hill.
But now we're going to drive how many hours? Two and a half hours?
Two-ish hours, yeah.
To?
Albululia.
Okay, and just like that, two hours later, we made it to Albululia?
Albululia.
And we are going into the citadel.
It's like this walled fortress that has like four different walls before you actually get in.
What is this?
Okay, so apparently we're supposed to go like down this tunnel, but we don't know where it goes.
And nobody else is going there.
And no one else is going there.
So let's see how this works.
Oh.
And here we are in the moat.
I love creepy stuff like that.
Where you're like, no one goes down here.
And then it has a very practical use, you know?
You're like, no one's going to use this.
They do.
I just love that instead of food carts, people sell things out of gypsy carts
or like gypsy looking carts.
Did you know that 5% of the Romanian population identify as gypsy?
So it turns out that the place we planned on eating tonight is actually down here in this moat.
Okay.
So we stopped to eat.
We're only an hour early for dinner.
Now we're eating at this restaurant in a moat.
I'm like looking at like cannonball holes in the wall right next to me.
This is a very surreal experience.
I don't think I've ever eaten in a place like this.
Okay, so since Zach and I don't get enough vegetables, we got two salads and a cheese pizza.
And we're pretty excited about it.
Like how can there be so many cannonball holes?
This is crazy.
Man, those vegetables are much needed.
However, we're like lost in this moat.
It seems like there's only one way in and one way out.
And you have to like walk around the whole thing.
We're not willing to do that.
So we're going to go back.
We have no idea.
Now we made it to what we think is the entrance, hopefully.
We didn't know our moat excursion would take like an hour.
So now we're actually going to go into the citadel.
I'm just so confused because we've been to like five castles on this trip so far.
And each one that had a moat was like very hard to get to the next level.
Like you had to like go underground through secret tunnels that were like put in after the castle was decommissioned, if you will.
And here, there's entrances all over.
Like I don't really think it was for defense.
I'm starting to think this was just like a maze for the people.
Albuluia is a absolutely beautiful city.
It is remarkable how intact and well kept it is.
Behind us is St. Michael's Cathedral.
It was built in the mid 1300s after a Mongolian invasion destroyed the original church.
And 300 years later, Albuluia decided to build a fortress around the entire city.
This might be the nicest castle I've ever been to.
I've never seen something so well preserved and like we have it all to ourselves.
We're not really here in the off season, but this just like feels surreal to have everything the way it was then.
And it's like not crumbling.
Okay, so we just got here at 7 o'clock on a Saturday night and apparently that is when worship starts at this church.
And we happened upon to go in and what did you think?
It was amazing.
The singing was really, really pretty.
And you can hear it.
It was just really, really nice.
I mean everybody was just walking in there just to like see it.
And it's a tiny little room.
And there's no chairs, you just stand.
For the whole service?
Yeah.
Oh.
Yeah.
It was interesting.
So to be honest, I had really high expectations of this place just because I knew like architecturally
and just the whole setup of this fort was going to be really impressive.
So it met those expectations, but I thought there was going to be like a lot more people inside.
Yeah, like more going on inside.
Oh.
It's a lot of really big, beautiful buildings.
Yes.
But it seemed kind of like...
Well and the fortress.
For me, as like an adventure kid, I really loved the moats and being able to walk in
them and having dinner in them.
And it was a lot more than I expected.
And if it was up to me, we'd spend another day here.
But interesting that we're like two different sides.
Which one are you on?
So anyways, we got a room.
Today was awesome.
Transylvania is amazing.
It's completely different from the rest of Romania.
And tomorrow, day five of the road trip, is going to be amazing.
Okay, so now...
Okay, so...
Queso.
I love queso.
