Welcome to the Turquoise Coast. We are in Fethiye in the far southwest of Turkey on the Aegean Sea.
This area is one of the biggest tourist stops in Turkey and we're here to find out what this
region has to offer and why millions flock here each year. We've got some exciting plans for the
next couple of weeks. But our task for today is to explore this beautiful city in the very heart
of the region. So we are actually starting the day above the city here at the incredible 2,400
year old Amintas rock tombs. Fethiye actually stands on the site of an ancient Lycian city
called Telmesos. So the Lycians were actually a civilization that inhabited this part of Turkey
for thousands of years, mainly BC. They're so beautiful and to think that they carved them in
so high inside the rock is just mind-blowing. So apparently it's not a massive museum. A lot
of the main finds were taken to England years ago but there's still quite a lot inside so let's have
a look. This is Fethiye museum which has got all different historical artifacts from this region in
Turkey. So if you're into history make sure you check it out. The entrance is free. So this block
just here is written in three different languages. It's got Lycian, Greek and Persian. It just shows
sort of the mix of cultures and languages that have lived in this part of the world.
Funny enough they're saying up there that there's no direct translation of those three languages
and the Lycian requires 41 lines whereas the Greek requires 33 and the Persian only 27.
That was very interesting. Let's keep moving. The cool thing is in Fethiye if you download the app
you can see where everything is. Fethiye is definitely a lot smaller than the other cities
we've been to so far in Turkey. There's a population of like a hundred and something thousand
but it feels a lot more homely if you could say that. Like the streets are a lot smaller,
there's a lot less people around. It's got a really nice feel about it.
Being a resort town Fethiye has got quite a large populations of British expats and a growing
community of Russian speakers as well. There are lots of different cafes spread across the whole
seafront which is quite cool. You can sit outside, chill, enjoy the view. There's literally loads of
these Lycian sarcophagi around the city literally dotted in random places. This one's outside the
council building and it's just incredible to see something this old right in the middle of the
street right next to an old council building. One thing we noticed with Fethiye as well is that
it's a lot more expensive than somewhere like Antalya. We looked at prices at few dishes and
they were literally twice as much here as they were in Antalya. There is a Roman amphitheater
right there but it's currently shut so we can't get in there. So where we are here in the Aegean
there's lots of islands dotted around as soon as you get out into the sea. To be honest you
don't really know if they're Turkish or Greek. There's a real mismatch here and you can actually
take a ferry from here in Fethiye to Rhodes. We just read the sign and it says same day return
so it just shows how close we are to Greece. This is Fethiye marina so pretty. These boats are nothing
you should see the one we used to have. So Fethiye is actually a completely natural harbour
so the mountains surround it on near enough all sides which means the water here even if it's
stormy out at the sea the water here is quite calm. Pretty cool. So we are starving so we're
gonna grab something to eat. What something is for something. Welcome to the fish market.
So we're just talking to the people there and apparently you can buy the fish from the middle
and then take it to any of the restaurants around the outside and then they'll cook it for you for
an extra fee and give you salad and bread with it so perfect. After debating for a long time
and window shopping quite a lot we decided to go for a toastie. These toasties were absolutely
delicious so if you come here go to that place people are so sweet and the toasties are giant
and so good we even took some with us couldn't finish it. And that doesn't happen often. I think
So we're off to the bus stop now we're gonna get a bus back to the area where we're staying
and we will show you what it's like when we get there. Okay welcome to the area where we're staying
which is Oludeniz or more specifically Hisiranu or even more specifically Little England.
Okay just a little warning this place doesn't usually look like this we're just very lucky
apparently the people here were waiting to...
Apparently people were waiting to get permission to change their drains. Was it the drainage? Yeah
the drainage for the whole resort town. They were waiting for permission for 23 years
and they got it now so the whole city is pretty much being rebuilt it seems like.
So yeah we're going to show you basically an idea of how it looks but obviously it's a lot better
and tidier if that makes sense. This place does always get a lot quieter in the winter
it is a summer resort for people coming here on holiday but there are a lot of expats living here
as well as Turkish people that have moved here so it shouldn't be as quiet as it is
but unfortunately again because of the fun we've had over the past year and a half the place has
really taken a taking a beating. On a serious note this is a really beautiful place and despite
obviously the drainage work they're doing at the moment I'd imagine in summer it's a really cool
place to have a holiday. The nature around here is beautiful it's set in the mountains it's right
just up the road from one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey which we'll show you in another
video and yeah it's got a really nice vibe about it it's a beautiful little town and I really hope
that everything gets a bit better for this summer because these people desperately need it like
everyone we're speaking to says they really they really need a good summer after last year and
the two winters prior to that and after that so touch wood. I hope this gave you a good insight
into what Fethiye and then up here in Oludeniz are actually like. It's a real shame we couldn't
show you Oludeniz in its full glory but life happens and we can only do what we can. So thank
you very much for watching this video hopefully we might come back here one day in the summer and
show you what it should be looking like. If you enjoyed this video give it a like, subscribe for
more videos from Turkey and beyond. Thank you very much for watching this video and see you in the next one.
These ruins are over 2 000 years old and you can even see the remains of people that used to live
here. We've picked up another crew member. Come on in. I've got you a yacht. I think there's a bedroom
downstairs. I'll take it. We are in the city center and I've got this weird place from Istanbul right there.
So we forgot to tell you we've picked up a new member of the crew. Say hello to... what is his name?
Doggo. That's original. Say hello to Doggo. Where are we going? You're the director. Where are we going?
