I am learning how to sinew back a bow! This is my second attempt at sinew backing a bow and so far it is looking promising. Backing a bow with sinew is and can be a difficult task but with great preparation of the back of the bow, the sinew backing process will be successful! I tried to use titebond hide glue this time to glue the sinew to the back of the bow. I have never used this kind of hide glue to prepare the back of a bow so it is an experiment using titebond hide glue to secure the sinew to the back of the bow! As long as the glue holds the sinew secure to the back of the bow we should have no problem.
Hey everybody, welcome back to the workshop. Today is a good day, and it's good to have you here because we are sin-
Car.
Hey everybody, welcome back to the workshop. Today is a good day. It's good to have you here because today we are sinu-backing a bow.
Now I'm a complete novice, a newbie, fairly new, completely new, basically completely new to the process of sinu-backing a bow.
I have done one bow in my lifetime, and it resulted in failure.
What happened is the sinu completely separated from the back of the bow.
And I think that happened because I did not prepare the surfaces well enough.
I did not prepare the back of the bow well enough.
So what I'm going to do differently on the bow I'm doing today is I'm going to rough up the back of the bow,
and then I'm going to clean it with like mineral spirits to try to get all of that grease out of it.
I know some people say to pour boiling water over it even after you do that,
but I've seen people have success with sinu-backing without even cleaning the back of the bow at all.
So I'm going to do this first and hope that this works out.
And if it doesn't work out, I guess I'll learn the lesson the hard way on how to prepare the back of the bow.
But even before you prepare the back of your bow, you need to get the sinu.
You can get that from harvesting your own animal, or you can buy sinu online.
After you acquire the sinu, you need to process it down into little pencil-lead-like strips.
I made a video on that, and I will link that right here somewhere.
But so you want to process it to that point, and then once you got them into all these little strands,
then you can apply it to the back of your bow.
I have already got my sinu processed and into equal-sized bundles,
so I'm going to go ahead and prep the back of the bow and get the sinu on.
We have now got the sinu on the bow, and it's looking really good.
I felt like I kept all the bundles really, really straight,
and I've been letting this sit now for about 30 minutes.
And what I've been told is that once it sits and kind of gels up,
after that's when you want to wrap the limb tips with a long piece of back sinu,
and then also wrap the handle, just to hold that on extra, extra well.
So I'm going to do that now.
On the last bow, I didn't wrap the tips at all, I don't think.
And so maybe that's another reason it separated off the back of the bow.
So I'm learning every day, and I'm having fun doing it.
So let's go ahead and wrap these tips.
And if you see me doing something wrong in any of this process, let me know.
I'm open to suggestions.
Also, one more thing.
I used this hide glue right here.
I've seen people, this Titebond hide glue, I've seen people use it.
And then I've seen other people say that they swear their life on,
you've got to make your own hide glue and warm it up and do the real thing.
And so I tried the real thing last time.
This time, I'm trying this Titebond genuine hide glue.
And so we'll see if this works out.
Kind of testing a couple different things out with this bow.
As you know, the plywood handle, the sinu, different hide glue,
roughing up the back of the bow.
That's what I did.
Some people say they don't like to rough up the back of the bow.
I tried to clean it with, I think it was paint thinner or mineral spirits.
Either way, pretty much the same thing.
And so we're experimenting some here and having a fun time doing it.
So let's go ahead and wrap these tips and wrap this handle.
And we'll go from there.
Guys, we have got a big problem.
It is the next day now.
And I've got the bow right here to my left, sinu backed.
But the glue has disappeared.
Some of it's dripped off.
And I think the sinu has sucked up a lot of it.
And I'm not sure why that's happened.
So if you know, let me know.
But there's all these crevices and gaps all throughout the entire sinu,
the entire back of the bow.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to grab the hide glue.
And I'm going to coat it again.
It's been 24 hours since I did this.
And it's still jelly.
Jelly?
It's still soft and squishy.
I don't even know what to call it.
But you get what I'm saying.
And so I'm going to go ahead and, boom, put some glue on it.
And hide glue does stick to itself.
So it will be fine.
But let me know if you know why that sucked up all the glue.
I have no clue.
Please help me out because I need it.
I need it.
Got your sinu.
You want to process it down into the form you need.
They look at me every time.
OK.
What was I saying?
Oh.
What was I saying?
Do you just talk, or do you wait until people leave to talk?
I just pick up the broom and pretend like I'm sleeping, and I'm actually not videoing.
So stay quiet, don't let them know we're here.
Alright guys, so now I've got the limb tips wrapped, I've got around the handle sections
wrapped, and then the last thing I went ahead and did is I grabbed some of the glue and
I just poured it on the top and I filled in some of those gaps where the sinew was kind
of sticking up.
I figured I can put an extra layer of glue on and then I can sand some of that glue down,
but I wouldn't want to sand any of that sinew down to get it smooth.
So on that note, that's going to be it for today.
Thank you all for joining me.
If you liked this video and it earned your subscription, then thank you.
If not, that's okay, because I'm getting better every single day.
If you have any suggestions for me, leave them in the comments, because clearly I am
very new to this.
And now we're going to let this dry for a week, and I'll see you guys in a week on the
next video.
