UK-born movie star, Colin Firth, has spent most of his years living in his native country and other European spots. His main home for most of his life has been his Victorian-style estate in West London, while he also spent plenty of time in his eco-friendly property in Italy. English film actor, Colin Firth has had himself a charming career over the past couple of decades, appearing in award-winning films like ‘The English Patient”, “Shakespeare in Love” and “The King’s Speech”, as well as some popular box-office hits like “The Kingsmen”, “Bridget Jones Diary”, and more. But as for his personal life? Well, that’s something of a different story. Born in Grayshott, Hampshire in England, Colin’s parents were academics and teachers who moved him around the entire globe when he was just a small child, spending time in both Nigeria and St. Louis, Missouri, which didn’t make life easy on the talented youngster. Then, upon returning to England, Firth and his family settled into Winchester where he spent the remainder of his childhood in a three-story home. That’s where Colin realized that he wasn’t nearly as academically inclined as his two parents and decided to pursue a career in acting. After a short-lived relationship with Meg Tilly, Colin would meet and marry film producer, Livia Giuggioli in 1997. The couple would have two sons while splitting their time between their properties in London, and a home in Livia’s home country of Italy. Unfortunately, despite being together for a very long time, these two would divorce in 2019.

During an interview with Hampshire Life, Colin Firth would open up in regards to what he
would describe as a difficult childhood, telling them,
When I was young, we moved around an awful lot, and it was difficult never being able
to settle in one place.
After stints spent living in Nigeria and Missouri as a small kid, Colin and his parents eventually
returned home to the UK, when Colin was a teenager.
That's when he began attending the Montgomery of Alamein Secondaries.
But Colin and his parents weren't done moving quite yet, and over the next few years, they'd
move around the UK, including Winchester and Eastleigh, before returning to Hampshire.
It was while living back in the town of Collinsbirth that the family moved into a three-story,
four-bedroom suburban home.
Of course, Colin hasn't lived in this home for a long time now, but when it was last
on the market in 2012, it was listed for £595,000, and being described as a property situated
in a well-established, tree-lined road within a short walk of the town centre's schools
and other amenities.
According to that same listing, the home includes a long rear garden, a newly built garage,
and a copious amount of extra parking.
Unfortunately, with the listing being as old as it is, that's about all we were able
to uncover about this place.
But, during the interview with Hampshire Life, Colin would reveal that he hopes to one day
Stating, I do always look towards Hampshire and plan to return, I'm sure it'll happen
one day.
But, as of right now, Colin's primary place of residence is the Chiswick area of West
London.
So, let's head there next.
Throughout Colin and Livia's long marriage, the couple did their absolute best to keep
their private life a closely guarded secret.
In fact, to this day, Colin doesn't have any social media accounts, and while talking
to CineSeries, he gave some insight as to why.
He said, my impulse is not to broadcast myself when I'm off the clock.
I think when I go home, I don't want to send more images out there.
Later in that same interview, Colin would state that his real priority was to spend
as much time at home with his wife and two young sons, Mateo and Luca, and, for the bulk
of their marriage, Colin did exactly that while living out of a Grade 2 listed Victorian
estate in Chiswick, West London.
Thanks to the premium he places on his privacy outside of what his home looks like, not all
that much else has been revealed about it.
But what I can tell you is this, at one point, both Colin and Livia were petitioning city
officials to let them install a large solar panel to make their home more energy efficient.
But due to the importance of the Queen Anne style houses in the Bedford Park area, which
lays claim to being London's first garden suburb, those same officials decided that
Colin's plan would bring harm to the historic settings and that this negative would outweigh
any environmental benefits that might be gained.
A city inspector would say, the proposed solar panel would erode the architectural qualities
of the listed host building itself and would cause actual harm to the character and appearance
of the Bedford Park conservation area.
So Colin and Livia gave up on their dream of green living in the middle of London and
decided to spend more time in their eco-friendly home in Umbria, Italy instead.
While discussing his life with Hampshire Life, Colin would give us the reason as to why Italy
had played such a large part in his life, telling them,
I fell in love with Italy from the very first moment and I would like to feel that I have
a more Italian way of appreciating life.
I must admit I am passionate about almost everything that's Italian.
My kids are fluent in the language and I love the lifestyle and the cuisine and sensibility
the people have.
I guess it makes sense then why he fell in love and married an Italian woman then, right?
After getting married in 1997, Colin and Livia bought themselves a gorgeous estate about
a mile or so outside of the medieval walled town of Cittadella Pive.
The village includes a cathedral with works by the Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino,
who was born nearby.
In fact, Colin and Livia were even married in the church.
Afterwards, the couple retired to the eco-friendly home that they built for themselves right
nearby.
Livia is an established environmental enthusiast who not only created her own eco-friendly
clothing and lifestyle line known as Eco Age, but has also worked with big time stars like
Cameron Diaz and Meryl Streep to support green initiatives such as her Green Carpet
Challenge campaign, which encourages celebrities to wear sustainable clothing when they're
in the limelight at red carpet events.
Unfortunately, for as much as these two clearly cared about one another, their marriage was
not meant to last.
In December of 2019, the couple called it quits after 22 years following the revelation
that Livia had an affair with an Italian journalist while she and Colin were on a break.
Complicating matters even further, Livia would then accuse her ex-lover after the affair
came to an end.
Together with Colin, she sued him in an Italian court for carrying out a campaign of harassment.
For what it's worth, Marco would deny all of these accusations, stating that he only
ever messaged Livia twice after they ended things, and that the worst thing he did was
email Colin to explain what had happened.
In the end, the case was settled outside of court in July 2018.
Then a little over a year later came news that Colin and Livia were splitting for good.
A source would tell People Magazine,
"...things never really came around for them after that.
No matter what was decided when they stayed together after her affair, nothing could erase
that betrayal.
It was time to move on, even though they had a solid family relationship and really wanted
to save it."
The good news is that even though their long-time partnership has come to an end, Colin and
Livia at least seem to be on decent terms with one another, and as recently as New Year's
Eve in 2020, they were seen together spending time with friends.
All of this is to say that the home life of the lovable Mr. Darcy is probably much more
complicated – not to mention private – than any of us would've initially thought.
But at least we know that Colin Firth has been living in some stunning European homes
over the years.
