French director Loïc Prigent heads to Louis Vuitton’s workshops in Asnières, just outside of Paris, to learn firsthand about the craftsmanship behind the Maison’s legendary luggage.
ABOUT LOUIS VUITTON
Since 1854, Louis Vuitton has placed fashion in the context of culture bringing unique designs to the world, combining innovation with style and uncompromising quality. Today, the Maison remains faithful to the spirit of its founder, Louis Vuitton, who invented a genuine “Art of Travel” through luggage, bags and accessories which were as creative as they were elegant and practical.
At the workshop we are divided into several sections
And we will have the special orders
section That's where I am
Clients start with a standard product and customize
it That means they will want more or fewer drawers
Modify the closet put two closets
The basic hammer used for osinage
What is osinage
L-O-Z-I-N-A-G-E
It's quick we invent our

me to try Yeah
We'll test

That should work There Yeah
It's solid
Yeah it's vital
What is the action you are taking today
I will take care of dressing the back of the trunk
Then I will proceed to dress the cover
I will dress the sides then I will do the padding
And can you do that with painted nails
Oh yeah
You just have to be a little careful but Stay stylish
What is your job
title anyway Marguinière-Maltière
It's a job I learned directly at Vuitton
What is the learning time at Vuitton exactly
I think we are always learning
In fact we have basic techniques
And then they evolve as they accumulate baggage
So it's very enriching
When did you arrive
It's been two years since I've been here Two
years that you've been here And you how long has it been
Well 30 years in the company 43 years in the trade
That was in July '88
How old were you
I was 28 years old
Whenever it gets a bit technical actually we often go see Michel
So as soon as there's something
a bit complex or things that are a little old
Where it's no longer clear exactly how it was
done Michel is the encyclopedia we go to for the information
We will meet again a few years later
We have the chance to be able to help them
so it's something interesting
It allows us to stay young somewhere
What do you have in your pockets
Gloves when you have quite valuable leathers
A eraser when you need to pamper something
A meter that will be used to take quick measurements
A punch that will be used for drilling
I think this is a colleague who left me some candies
After that I don't have much
inside Right
No I have a lipstick that's all
That's for watches is it
Yes
People are afraid of missing the time that's all
I made the frame
here Here is a baguier
We have a drawer with a removable frame
This is for storing bracelets
Here it's for storing lighters
This is for storing
What had we said
Sunscreen or sunglasses
Here it's a drawer with removable compartments
Here it's still for storing watches
An empty drawer here
Two empty drawers
Two drawers for storing more watches
The small surprise at the end is this small box
It's for when the customer wants to leave with just
if necessary a watch
We are in
hyper -luxury now Yes
Here is the cell point
One going down
One going up
And you do
A line
A dash
Yes here it is
Can I try then
Yes go ahead
Are you holding my camera
If you want to
Oh yeah
Are we exchanging
We're exchanging here
This one first here
You go into the lower hole
But how do I know where I'm going to come out Oh yes
it's out This one has to go around right No
Is this one
Oh my goodness what have we done
What a mess
You're going in there
Yes you're going in there
But that's where I
didn't get it There and there Is it
this one Or is
it that one Is
this one supposed to go there
Who is going to do the tour
Him Yes there
he is
She's too stylish
your box Thank you
It's a tool box
There's all my tools
Because actually I'm moving from the first floor to the second floor
So I need my
tools And since I was going out for a bit
it looks good in front of our clients to have a nice box
o present our products
Do you know the date you joined Vuitton or not
Oh yes August 28 1988
I arrived at Vuitton ten years ago
You're an old-timer
No just a little old-timer
But we had an average age of 43 years for a while So
it was a workshop with a lot
a lot a lot of older people
But what's good is that there
was a transition phase where
we the young veterans were able to learn from those people
It's pretty cool to keep the tradition and craftsmanship alive
The strength of the house is that we constantly innovate
Finally we constantly change products Also the
watchmaker where there is a mix of plexiglass and wood
There you're on materials that are a new canvas
There isn't even a Louis Vuitton logo
Then there are canvases where it will be a new print
We saw at the second show where there is LED lighting
Tomorrow it's not certain
they will tell us that
I want a bed with LEDs So it's cool It's a challenge for us
We even have the challenge here
There that was a chest I had designed for the milkmaid
In fact the milkmaid painting traveled in a
Vuitton case from the Amsterdam museum to Tokyo
So it was a chest I
had designed for
them – Did you make the milkmaid's chest – Yes
– Oh my goodness
The code name was Turtle
To say the shell
Basically I was given the packaging box
which the painting was to be contained
I was given the colors
but then I was told that something practical had to be done
Only Vuitton can do that actually
And that's what's cool
