I'm Oscar. And I'm Dan. And today we're in Bucharest, Romania. Previously on Oscar and Dan. The
home of Dracula. Yeah I'm like what the f*** Romania. Um no thank you. Oh my god how beautiful.
So we made it to Bucharest and the first order of business is finding food and we found the
top rated vegan restaurant in the entire city. Should be good I hope. I haven't really had
anything to eat today because I can't really swallow so this is gonna be interesting. Is it
open? I think so. Let's dig in. Can you swallow? Barely. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning.
We are in Bucharest. Bucharest. Bucharest. Bucharest. We have a day and a half but I don't
feel like we're gonna do too much exploring tomorrow morning. So today is our day to explore.
We have a great friend from Romania as we said before. It's so fun when you know someone to get
to see you know where they're from, what context they grew up in. Sadly he's not here right now so
he can't show us around. He'll be here in two weeks so we really timed this splendidly. First
we're heading into Old Town and then we'll take it from there. I think we found the gentlemen's club
street. Maximum security prison. I don't think Oscar and I want to go to this specific gym.
This is all just an old town. Like usually Old Town is like the most wholesome part of any European
city but I mean it's usually where the sketchy stuff happens. Another one. No. Man's only. Yep.
Somehow I can't connect that this and Brasov are the same country but then again historically they
weren't so I guess that's why I get such a different feeling here. Oh my god I just have
say I think we forgot to mention yesterday that when we drove into the city I mean we've been to
many former communist countries but I have never seen like a communist style avenue like the one
we drove on yesterday. It was insane. Never-ending like huge buildings on both sides just unlike
anything we've ever seen before. We're just wandering around and I'm feeling this great
sense of gratitude that Oscar and I have almost seen every single capital in Europe. They're all
similar in some ways and unique in some ways. Just getting to compare them is so so fun. It's
like doing you know an ice cream tasting or something. Oh this is a different flavor. This
is a different flavor and then it's all about which flavor you like most because there's not
really anything that's objectively better than the other at least in all aspects that you could
compare them. We just randomly like stumbled upon one of the top vegan places in town so uh let's
love this spare the lamb. In Romania you can't do without the holiday steak apparently. This
motivated us to invent spare the lamb a unique dish with local flavors which replaces the
tradition of killing lamb or holiday pig with a delicious approach of respect for animals and the
planet. Love it. So I'm googling the most traditional Romanian foods we have to try. We've already tried
the different spreads just not on camera.
Eggplant salad. Tried that too. Fried cheese. Gonna be hard. Lamb haggis. Romanian polenta. That's an
option on the menu but we don't really love polenta. Cabbage rolls. Okay we have that basically
in Sweden. Soup. Not today. It's 30 degrees. Romanian kebabs. So that's one thing we're gonna try
Romanian sausage. That's for tonight. We just realized we said the meat thing completely
wrong. It's not miki or misi or anything like that. It's just mich. So I just want to say something that
is very stupid but for a long long time I used to think that Romani people were from Romania. I'm sure
a lot of other people think that too just because the name sounds like they're Romanian. They are not.
They're North Indian. So there's actually fewer Romani people here in Romania than there are in
like Sweden or Germany. I just always made that wrongful connection. So if you didn't know, now you
know. And I didn't find out about this just now. I found out about it a few years ago but it's still
very good to know. Okay cool. We got our American style burgers but this is what the restaurant is
famous for. And we have the vegan version of the veg mich. I think she said mich. Smells good.
And mustard. Interesting. Stew it. Stew it. Mustard. God damn. God damn. God damn. God damn. Yum. So good. I mean it's like a grilled
meat. It's a really really good malt. Great flavor. Smokiness. Spices. And great mustard.
Apparently it's mostly made from wheat gluten. So like seitan and wheat protein.
Communism 101. This feels a little like Uzbekistan almost, right? First thing you need, a giant fountain.
Second, a giant avenue that leads up to. Number three, a very imposing communist looking building.
And number four, surrounded by the crepid. And then post-communism. Number five, add a bunch of
international, mostly American brands on top of those buildings. Fifty. But in all seriousness, this
fountain is incredibly impressive. This is a very cool fountain. There's like a huge fountain surrounding
the inner fountain too. Yeah. Am I the only one who just wants to hop in and swim whenever I see
something like this? Especially on a day like this with like 30 degrees. The parliament. The British
parliament. The Romanian one actually. I love that I've seen so many people so far like fanning
themselves with actual fans or like using tissues to blot their sweat. Because I'm like, thank you.
Finally a country where you don't feel like you're the only one who's overheated and everyone else is
like, it's no big deal. Here you see that people are suffering too. It's not like walking around
Bangkok when it's like 35 degrees and like all the locals are wearing like down jackets. Yeah.
It's so cold. And we're like, ma'am, take that off right now.
Oh my God. We found the Dracula fountain. I've also never seen a parliament that looks so much
like a luxury hotel. And it's really like sad that it's not an option to go in there and eat
at a restaurant or something. Good photos. A little bit dark, but let's see if we can fix it.
So we were randomly led to this concert based on the sound. We're not going to go in because we
Perfect for a hot day. Summer in Europe.
I must say, I don't think we've ever been in another country that hasn't been in some sort of
someone translate that for us, please. I don't think we've ever been in another country that
hasn't been at war and some sort of conflict that has so many flags everywhere as Romania.
So we're in this really nice park now with a name that I can't pronounce and they have this
beautiful lake, but unfortunately it's so hot today. So all the water evaporated.
That's not why I'm getting. Yeah. I don't know why it's empty, but for whatever reason,
they emptied it today. So I realized we haven't said in a long time, why we're actually trying
to visit so many new countries, why we're going to a hundred countries by the end of this year.
And the reason is really that we want some reason to push ourselves to explore and learn as much as
we can about the world. Going to school or university is not the only way to learn. There's
so many ways to learn things about the world and about life and by pushing ourselves to travel to
places we might not have gone. Otherwise we learn so, so much. And even though it's exhausting at
times, like when I'm sick, which I'm still sort of getting over my tonsillitis, which I had a few
days ago. It's such a growth experience every single day. Each new country is at least one
new perspective on the world, really. So each time we go to a new place, it's sort of like gaining
yeah, a new lens to view the world through actually. A new Instagram filter. That too.
Adopt, don't shop.
This building is beautiful. This building is so beautiful. It's called the Romanian Athenium
something and it's a performance hall. So they have the Philharmonic Orchestra in there. So
if you want your daily dose of Bach or Mozart, that's the place to go. So anyone who's ever
traveled in a city will know the feeling toward the afternoon when sitting down becomes deadly.
There's so many benches or places where I'm like, oh, I would love to just sit down here for a
second. But you know, if you do, there's no getting back up. So thankfully Oscar is like,
let's go. No sitting down for you. Cause if I could have it my way and our friend,
April and from Singapore always says traveling with just me is basically sitting and eating.
So thankfully Oscar adds a bit more of the active part because otherwise traveling
wouldn't be very efficient. If I could describe Bucharest in three words, I think it would be
communism surrounding beauty. Not only are there Romanian flags everywhere, like we said earlier,
but there are also European union flags, absolutely everywhere here, just like in Bulgaria.
So it seems like they're really trying to, you know, get closer to the EU here as well,
which I assume has a lot to do with the fact that they're not like fully integrated into
Schengen and the Eurozone yet. I don't know if they want to be that, but might have something
to do with it. Romanian is such a cool and interesting language. I think a lot of people
forget that it's a Latin language. So it's related to Spanish, Italian, French, et cetera,
but it's just been a strange from all the linguistic relatives for so long. So it's
been surrounded by Hungarian and all these other Slavic languages. So now it's very,
very different from all the other romance languages, but it is romance at its core.
There you go. Pretty cool. Romanian.
Come on Bucharest. Get your ass up and work Bucharest.
Oh my God, Georgia. Is that you? Hello, Des.
Good evening. We took a few hours to rest in our hotel, stay out of the heat. Now it's 8 PM and
it's wonderful outside. The temperature is perfect and we felt that we need to make the most of being
here in Bucharest. So we want to go out, see it a bit in the evening. We're having a funny moment
because we both grew up in Europe, right? But I suddenly feel like I'm in an Instagram reel.
That's like summer evenings in Europe. And then it's like some trending sound with this
sunset on the building. It's like totally Emily in Bucharest right now.
We also wanted to see the beautiful Russian church. Unfortunately it is under construction.
We're not under construction, under renovation. Yeah, I would assume.
Yeah, exactly. It's just been established in 2022, y'all. And we realized that we took so
few pictures together in Bucharest and now we're like, oh my God, it's getting dark. So we thought
we'll take a picture with this church. Nope. I'm sure you guys know the agony when you get back
from a trip and you're like, bloody hell, we don't have any pictures, Mary. Well, the difference is
at least we have these videos, right? Yes. So I think that accounts for something. So this is our
beautiful hotel and right next to it is probably the ugliest building I've ever seen. It's definitely
the ugliest we've seen today. Our hotel is kind of close to the clubbing area of the city, which is
obviously not mine and Oscar's scene. So we're just like, let's stay on the street
between the clubs and our hotel. Good morning, everybody. It's time to leave.
Good morning, everybody. It's time to leave Bucharest and Romania today. So we're driving
to the airport, gonna drop off our rental car. We've had a great time here, but we're really
excited to move on to the next country and the last final new country on this trip, which is
its neighbor up north. This isn't something you see in an airport every day. A casino.
All right. And just like that, we're here and we're about to board our flight to country 90.
I can't believe we're going to our 90th country and this is going to be such a cool one. So we
hope you come along and watch that video as well, which will be our next one if you
haven't already subscribed. But until then, see you around the world.
