Cool DIY Twinkle Yard Lights

What’s not to like about this project? It’s quick, economical, makes a great impact in your evening yardscape, and uses commonly found supplies!

Solar lights help solve the problem of adding definition and light to your evening yard setting - even when you don’t have electrical wiring out into your yard. They are readily available from major retailers, but, they can start to look a bit the same when a lot of them are placed in your yard.

Solar twinkle lights to the rescue! These great little lights are readily available online, at a very reasonable price (about $20 for a set of 6 twenty-bulb light kits as of Summer 2019), have a cool “firefly” lighting effect, and utilize a standard quart or pint small mouth glass canning jar!

To make things even better, they can be hung from posts, set on top of rocks, put in a fairy garden setting, or put singly on small shepherd hooks or in batches on larger hooks, or on shelves and railing. Just be sure to allow them to get adequate charging sunlight during the daytime to give them what they need to deliver real pizzazz when the sun goes down!

Each light set comes with the bail (loop hanger/handle), screw-on solar charging puck (with integrated AA battery compartment and rechargeable battery), and an attached wire with mini lights.

WARNING! Some retailers offer lights for less, but make sure you are getting light strings that are at least 20 bulbs - 30 is even better! We’ve seen sets that have down to 8 bulbs, and that simply is not enough to get a noticeable light, and have the “firefly” effect when you have more bulbs. Pay a bit more - it’s worth it.
