Today I'm going to show you how to become a better basketball player with some simple things you can
work on every time you get to the gym. But the prerequisite to become a better basketball player
actually starts before any of this stuff I'm giving you here. It starts with you getting to
the gym on a regular basis. Now it doesn't necessarily have to be a gym but I'm just
saying like get to the court. I highly recommend you get out there with a hoop whenever possible
because there's certain skills you just can't develop like layups and shooting without a hoop
right and you really need to start working on like your ball handling and transitioning into
those elements. Going from a dribble move into a layup like there's a little transition in there
where you have to gather the basketball. Same thing with your shot. There's footwork involved
with all those things right and it's about sticking kind of with the basics and then
branching off to some degree. We'll get a little more advanced in some combos here but it's mainly
about like being efficient and like powerful and crisp with everything you do. So the first thing
we're going to do is we're going to start from the top of the key. We're going to work on layups.
Yes basic layups with basic dribbles but focusing on something very specific. When I go for this
layup I don't want to like just go into it like it's the layup lines and I'm trying to look cool
put my hand behind my leg you know do all kinds of crazy stuff with the basketball. Yes that sounds
great and stuff you can work on as you get advanced. I'm not saying it's bad but like in games like a
lot of times that's not what you need. A lot of times all you need is to be able to get there
quick right. What you want to work on is starting with the top key. Start with your dribble. Big
key. You don't want to start from triple threat. Triple threat is something you can use in games
to start getting your layups off. Yes but it's like the easiest thing in the world to do. When
we get into the gym we want to make the most of our time. It's much more difficult to work on this
first step of being explosive off the dribble. So that's why we want to start getting things off
the dribble first. So now we're developing that instead of doing something easy right. If you got
this down you can start getting this down again. Start with your dribble. Taking a quick hard step
with that first step. Really focusing on pushing off. Besides that the next thing you want to pay
attention to is we want to try to get into this layup in as few dribbles as possible. Count your
dribbles. Ideally from a standstill you want to work your way up to being able to get to the ramp
in one dribble. Now if you're smaller it might be a little bit harder to get something like that
down. So it might take time to build yourself up to that level. If you have to take two that's fine.
If you have to take three that's fine. Get a good clean consistent layup off that you know you're
going to make. If you're down to one try to make it so like when you're going up for this layup
I'm like tight to the basket right. I'm close. I'm right here. I'm not finishing the layup out
here. I want to be here. I want to get there as quick as possible. As high as possible
and get some power into that. Just to run down a few more basics. Typically you want to make sure
when you get here we're going one left foot right foot on the left side. When we go to the right
side we want to go hard as we can to this side. Pick the basketball up right foot left foot. Get
up into that layup. As you get advanced you might get super powerful with those dribbles and cover
a lot of ground and you might be able to get there and the best way to pick up the basketball is
right left on the left side and go goofy foot. If you've got your basic steps down and going
goofy foot is the fastest possible way to get there do it. Work on it. The reason for that is
number one if I'm in a game situation and there's a defender behind me and the best way to get this
layup off is to just go goofy foot and why would I slow down and take like an extra little stutter
step to get the right steps down and now my defender can catch up and swap my shot. So it's
a skill that can be helpful and it's also good for like if I got a defender here I can kind of use
this off leg here for a little protection so they can't really get to the basketball without
following me. Same thing on the other side you can go goofy foot. The other thing you want to work on
with all this stuff so I'm going to give you everything both from a layup and then a jump shot
so working on getting into that jump shot from one quick dribble. So I also with this want to cover
a lot of ground I want it to look like my layup so when my defender thinks okay he's gonna go for
the layup boom I'm rising up into that shot too late for him. A couple things you can pay attention
to is squeeze your abs as you're about to stop that'll help you stay on better balance and also
focus on that footwork being crisp. A lot of times what I see with players is they'll be like
all these little stutter steps you might get called for a travel and you're cuing your defender off
okay I'm gonna go up into that shot. We want it to happen so quick that they don't have a chance
to try to contest back because they see it's moving forward so they're gonna drop back
boom we take that second step we're good to go. So it should be a one two step left hand dribbling
right left or we can make it even quicker by having both feet land on the ground at the same
time but we're trying to cover ground with that dribble. Going to the right side would be left
right or again we can also work on the hop. Once you got that down next thing we want to do is
what we want to do from here is go hard dribble here so the defender thinks we're gonna go
for that layup but then boom hit him up with a crossover. Cover ground on that first dribble
get as far as you can and then boom put right into the crossover. The thing you'll want to pay
attention to is I get this left foot down just almost like my jump shot right we talked right
left into that jump shot same thing here hard dribble right left plant push come across and
finish either directly to the middle of the rim right up here right there or on the right side
over there. Once you got that go to the other side same thing we're gonna go left right crossover
either finish at the middle of the rim or to the side and then once you're to that level with doing
the crossover counter move then start doing things with a jump shot pulling right up into
the jump shot using a little bit more of a side step so notice I move along the free throw line
here so as my defender thinks I'm about to go to the basket and they drop back I got a little
variation on my angle to come to the side so as they're dropping back I'm creating a little bit
of sneaky separation to get that shot off or sometimes what will happen as I'm going here
they're gonna drop back far and this allows me to really create a lot of separation for easy shots
now I can really be in rhythm and confident get a clear look at the basket. Next thing we can add
to branch off the miss is going from this crossover boom into a counter cross it's a little fake
there right so coming here one two step just like before crossing over trying to get this second
hand down low to kill it back boom I can go into my layups like we talked about before we'll also
want to add in the jump shot with that right boom boom side step jump shot doing the same thing to
the right side one two cross cross and for the layup one two cross cross into the pull-up jump
shot then you can start getting a little more quick with that so the cross cross is like a
fake and coming back right what you can do is to make things even quicker is go one two boom into
an inside out so the footwork will change a little here I'm gonna go right left make it look like I'm
gonna go into the crossover step with this opposite foot a little bit hand comes over the top of the
basketball pulls it back up go up for that layup and again I can do more of a side step motion
so we're gonna go right left inside out side step into a shot same thing on the right side going
left right left foot steps come in for that layup left right left foot steps side step into a jump
shot and then from there work on changing the layups up so there's a couple things you can do
on this side of things you can add this into like all these different combos I gave you so far
so let's just take it with the basic dribble coming to the basket as quick as we can
one thing I can do to sell a fake here and then jump out to this side with that second step that's
the euro step if you don't know what that's called so I'm first step here taking a diagonal
movement to this direction so I can finish on this side of the rim typically what you'll see
I'm going left right so now the ball is going to be more comfortable to do a left hand finish
because my left leg is up so I'm going to be finishing with the left hand on the right side
so that'll take some time to get down on the right side it would be the same thing just reverse right
right left boom right leg up right hand is shooting and I'm going to be on the left side of
the basket one other thing you can add let's say you're getting really good like one dribble right
or just any of these moves really but especially with like the one dribble you're getting here one
dribble and you're like super in tight right I'm like under the basketboard or past it when I land
what you can do is top the key one two switch hands and get a reverse off from that one dribble
and really any of this stuff if you're starting to get really tight in okay sell a little ball
fake with two hands or one hand come to the other side and finish with a reverse layup there got to
really take all this stuff next level I highly recommend you check out the playlist thing that
