RIP.
Legend.
What's going on Hybrid Shooters, it's Jason Vong and it is indeed a sad day if you hadn't
already noticed the Sony a6000 has been marked officially discontinued on the B&H website.
I found out about this through my friend Professor Hines, he posted an Instagram story about
this and I had to double check on sites like Adorama and Amazon and there are literally
no signs, no traces of this camera anymore.
Which is a shame because I actually had plans on making content with the Sony a6000 and
talk about why it's still a good buy in 2021, but instead of a good buy, it is now a good
buy.
So if you go to any official retailer site right now, you can't buy the a6000 body only.
You can still pick up an a6000 but it's going to be bundled with the two kit lenses and
those will likely be cleared out after the holidays.
So if you're looking to still pick up a budget setup that's an interchangeable lens, APS-C
camera, now would be the time to do it.
Otherwise, really consider the Sony a6100 or the a6400.
Those are massive, massive a6000 upgrades that are worth considering, but that's not
today's video.
Today's video is more on a tribute of the a6000, kind of talking about what made it
so popular and the impact that it had on the camera community.
So what was so great about the Sony a6000?
Compared to beginner DSLR setups, this is less than half the size and less than half
the weight.
And with DSLR cameras, knowing how to dial in your setting is really important.
What you see in the viewfinder is not necessarily what you will get.
When you first got started, how many times when you look through the viewfinder, you
see a great image, you capture it just to find out your result is either overexposed
or super underexposed.
But with mirrorless cameras, what you see is what you get.
Changing the settings on the back of the camera reflects what your final image would look
like.
And a few pros saw the potential in that.
DSLR shooters were laughing, of course, the stigma was back then, you're not a pro if
you're not shooting with either a Nikon or a Canon camera.
But early adopters of mirrorless cameras, especially the a6000 crew, they're just like,
hey, laugh it up.
If it gets the job done, who cares what it was shot on?
It was pretty wild back then.
Now, I myself personally am not an early adopter.
I chatted with a lot of longtime Sony enthusiasts, especially the ones that are in the Sony artisan
program.
And every time they talk about the a6000, they talk really fondly about it.
It's a camera that they don't sell.
It's still sitting on their shelf to this day just because of how much they love it.
I am someone who boarded the Sony hype train right before everything took off.
This was when Sony a7S and the a7R really shook up the world back in 2015.
And it was around this time that YouTube started becoming a place of education for budding
photographers and filmmakers.
And of course, because the pros were starting to look at Sony full frame cameras, the popularity
for these cameras sort of blew up.
Now, while the full frame stuff is great, it is expensive.
So it begs the question for a lot of people, what is an alternative mirrorless camera that
is almost just as good, but at an affordable price?
So I like to title this chapter, Growing Resurgence, just because I feel like the Sony a6000 flew
under the radar for half its life.
It was really 2016 and 2017, that's when the camera blew up.
And timing attributed to a lot of this camera's success.
Because around that time, a lot more people were coming onto the social media space to
make a career for themselves.
And on the meanwhile, in the pro world, we're all hyping up the Sony a7S and a7R, and people
are looking up these cameras online, like, what is the best for what I do?
And they find that the pricing to get these cameras were a little bit too high.
So they're like, okay, what's the next best alternative?
What is the budget alternative?
So then reviewers started to look into the a6000, kind of talking about what this camera
can do for the mass.
And there will be other people out there devising tutorials around this camera, how to get the
pro look on the budget option, and talking about the lenses that they can pick up to
do the work that most people would need it to do.
Sony got really popular, but this was what most people could afford.
And thanks to reviews, this remains to be Sony's top selling mirrorless camera for the
last three years, until now.
Even I talked about how this is still a great buy in 2020.
Photos are still just as good coming out of this camera, even by today's standard.
And that's because it's a 24 megapixel interchangeable lens, APS-C camera that can shoot RAW and
JPEG up to 11 frames per second.
It can shoot 1080p full HD, and it has hybrid autofocus.
So the autofocus is fast in both photo and video mode.
In photo mode, you have face autofocus and static eye autofocus.
And it still uses an SD card, which we still all use today.
One of the things that people really enjoy about the a6000 camera was the built-in app
store.
You can like buy like a time lapse app and put it into your a6000 to do time lapses.
And the entire camera itself is good enough for a lot of people, especially those who
are just looking for a good photography camera.
And the quality of images really hasn't changed, right?
If you want a different look, use a different lens.
If you want to upgrade your setup, just buy a better lens.
And depending on what you can buy, it could be just as good as using a full frame setup.
One can argue.
However, it is the quality of life when you upgrade to the newer models of Sony cameras
that has changed a lot.
Since 2018, 2019, if you buy the a6100, a6400, you get 4K videos up to 30 frames per second
with no overheating issues.
You can shoot 1080p up to 120 frames per second.
And the biggest thing about these cameras is that the colors look amazing straight out
of camera in both photos and videos.
And with the popularity of vlogging, the flip up screen definitely made the a6400 incredibly
popular when it first launched.
And of course, the newer cameras have a mic jack so you can put a mic for better audio.
And not only that, I think the biggest upgrades when we're talking about the newer Sony a6000
cameras is that the autofocus is crazy, crazy good.
We now have continuous face and eye autofocus in both photo and video.
Okay, maybe just the a6600 for eye autofocus in video.
Not only that, but for pet lovers, animal eye autofocus and a touch tracking autofocus
is insanely good.
It is super, super sticky.
But despite all that, new users will still choose the Sony a6000 just because of the
affordability and just because it's good enough.
There are a ton of videos out there showing you how to get the right lens to get the right
shot.
There are a lot of tutorials out there that shows you how to edit photos a lot better,
presets, even video.
Not a6000's strongest feature, but there are videos out there showing you what color profiles
to use to maximize your dynamic range for cinematic movie shots with an a6000.
As a Sony YouTuber myself, I unfortunately didn't talk much about the a6000 just because
I was more wrapped up with the full frame stuff and the newer APS-C models, but people
who do talk about the a6000 on YouTube, I've seen them score way higher views and gaining
subs way faster than me just because they specifically focus on the a6000.
So it's sort of bittersweet to say goodbye.
It's almost like the end of an era for me, you know, as a creator on YouTube because
we're going to see a lot less content produced around the a6000 simply because new users
who are coming in, they won't be able to buy this camera unless they buy it off eBay, of
course.
But the mass that goes to Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, they're not going to see this camera on the
storefront anymore.
So the next budget option is going to be opened up for either the a6100 or the a6400.
Who knows?
But farewell, a6000.
Thank you for empowering the mass to be creators on any social media platforms and really anyone
who uses a camera in their career.
