How did I end up in the surgery room?! Today's vlog is a little bit different because as those of you who follow me on TikTok and Instagram know, I've been having a medical issue for a long time and I finally had to go to the hospital for it. Thankfully I got to see the Sharer family, including @StephenSharer and @GRACESHARER, but there's just one problem: I couldn't smell or taste! I know that might sound weird, but being able to smell and taste are two of your five senses and it's a big part of every day life. Thankfully my ex-girlfriend, @LizzyCapri was there for me as well. The surgery lasted 4 hours, and I almost passed out just from a checkup. Should I get a pilot's license and buy a mini-plane?! Comment below!!

Welcome to the vlog, guys.
I am here at the operating room.
I'm in pre-op, and I'm about to go in to surgery.
It turns out I actually need to get surgery.
Oh, for goodness sakes.
Is everything okay?
I need surgery.
Carter, are you okay?
They said I kept waking up during surgery,
so they gave me more drugs.
My nose is dripping blood throughout the day.
This recovery's taking a lot longer than I anticipated.
Hey, Team Ryer, welcome to the vlog.
I wanna say that this video is a little bit different.
It's a little bit crazy, guys.
Getting surgery is quite the experience,
and I'm gonna bring you guys along every step of the way,
but I wanna give you guys a little bit of a heads up.
The video does get graphic at times,
so just be, you know, viewer discretion is advised,
but otherwise, sit back, relax, and enjoy the video.
Woo!
So this whole thing started out
when I went to the doctor one day
because I noticed I was very congested.
I figured I just had a sinus infection or was just stuffy,
so we booked an appointment, and off we went.
Carter's sick, guys,
so we are taking him to a sinus specialist
because I think he has a sinus.
They're gonna stick a thing up your nose
and see what's going on in there.
They're gonna see the boobaloos running around.
You excited?
This is it.
As soon as I got there,
the doctor put me in this crazy head-scanning machine
which basically could look inside my sinuses and my airways,
and the first thing that the doctor says
is that I have a chronic disease
and I need to get surgery to fix it.
Of course, we had a ton of questions,
so we asked him a lot of stuff along the way,
and ultimately, he put a camera in my nose.
Yes, it looked like a long pencil.
It was about 10 inches long,
and he would put it super far up my nose with the camera
so he could see what is going on inside my head,
and while the doctor is doing that,
over here on the TV,
you can see what's actually going on inside my nose,
and essentially, the doctor is explaining
that I am super stuffy, not with boogers,
but with a bunch of other stuff going on
that's gonna need a surgical correction.
This is huge news to me, guys.
Surgery is no joke,
so I felt like I need to call my mom
and tell her what's up.
And of course, I gotta tell all of Team RAR too.
I am T-minus two days from surgery, guys.
I'm out here doing a one-wheel ride,
and here is my sinus update.
I can't really breathe very well still.
Last night, I literally had to breathe out of my mouth
just every day.
I can't smell anything.
That's pretty normal for me.
That's as messed as I can breathe.
If my mouth ever got completely taped shut,
I don't think I would survive
because I can't breathe enough oxygen
in and out of my nose,
which is just kind of a crazy thing to think about.
The next day.
It is the day before my surgery,
and I wanna give you guys an update
of what I've been living with my entire life.
Check it out.
So here's my nose, breathing as hard as I can
in and out of my nose.
This is what my everyday experience is like.
You can tell I'm extremely stuffy,
but it's not because I need to blow my nose
and I have boogers.
It's nothing like that at all.
It's because I have congestion
to the point where the tissue in my nose,
for whatever reason,
because of allergies and other causes,
has sort of grown and it's too large
where the actual pathways are blocked.
And there's times where I can't even breathe
at all through my nose.
And tomorrow after surgery,
I'm gonna be able to breathe properly
for the first time in my life.
And because smell is so much linked with taste,
I'm gonna be able to taste foods more vibrantly
for the first time ever in my life.
And I am so excited to be able to breathe,
to be able to sleep,
to be able to talk better,
not sound so nasally,
and especially to smell and taste food.
I'm also a little bit nervous
to be put completely under and go into surgery.
And because my nose impacts my sleep so much,
and sleep is so important
and makes you feel so good or bad
during the next day,
here are some of the things that I've resorted to.
I got all kinds of different medications
I've tried over time,
none of which really worked that well.
Different things for stuffy nose,
different medications and prescriptions
and just everything.
And my whole night table is literally littered
with just different medicines and stuff,
which is crazy,
because half of the stuff that I take,
particularly Zyrtec and Flonase,
when I do it,
it does actually help a little bit,
but then it causes my skin to break out horribly
and I just get tons of acne
and it's totally not worth it
because it's just doing something to my body
that is like not good.
So I really don't wanna be having to take medicine.
So it's another reason I'm very excited to get this done,
even though I'm actually really nervous at the same time.
If this surgery tomorrow is gonna fix my sense of smell,
then I need to do a smell test tonight.
Ooh, look at this delicious.
What do you call this, Matt?
Baked potato soup.
Doesn't smell like anything to me
because I still can't smell until tomorrow.
I'm gonna be able to smell and taste food like this
for the first time and I can't wait.
What's the smelliest thing you got?
Try it.
This is garlic powder.
Okay.
Really strong.
I can't smell it at all.
Are you serious?
Nothing.
You really don't smell that?
Oh, this one smells so good.
This is smoked paprika.
It smells like air.
What?
I will say there is a benefit to not being able to smell,
so if I ever fart really bad,
it doesn't smell like anything.
I'm chilling.
Oh, dude.
Hey, what?
No, Andrew, it doesn't smell like anything.
It smells fine.
All right, everyone, I'm going off.
I got surgery in the morning.
Next time you see me, I'm gonna be a smelly, nosy guy.
Bye, guys.
Surgery is getting super close
and I'm starting to get a little bit nervous,
so on the drive home,
I decided to call my best friend, Hunter.
You know, I got surgery in the morning.
Yeah.
I mean, it's not a massive surgery.
No, it's not massive,
but you know, I do gotta get put under
and you know, there's complications.
What is the complications?
Well, empty nose syndrome,
which is you lose the sensation in your nose,
so when you're breathing,
you can't feel the air going in and out.
It causes severe anxiety and depression
and people say, like, it completely ruins their life.
You're kidding.
Yeah, that's the first time I heard about it.
It was on TikTok.
I was like, wait,
they're talking about the exact surgery that I have to get.
I'm definitely a little bit worried about that,
but otherwise, I'm just kind of going into it,
trusting the process and just hoping for the best.
No, it's gonna be good, Kurt.
It's gonna be good, man.
I'm at dinner with my mom and dad
and this is the last meal before surgery
because I have to start fasting in about an hour.
And so, this is quite literally the last meal
that I'm gonna eat that I can't smell or taste.
And so, next time I eat food,
I'm actually gonna be able to taste it.
Aw.
Aw, Otter, are you sad I have to get surgery tomorrow?
So, this is gonna be my last night's sleep
with my stuffy nose where I'm snoring
and can't breathe very well.
No lie.
Let's go to bed.
Guess what?
It's Carter's day for surgery
and it's super early.
It's almost 5 a.m.
and I gotta wake him up,
make sure he's ready to go and get there on time.
Are you up, Carter?
He's up.
I can hear him.
He'll be out in a minute, I guess.
Before he goes, unfortunately, I'm up.
There is no sun.
It is the middle of the night.
It is still so dark.
It looks the same as it did before.
We gotta go.
It's so early.
Nobody is out.
The city is running late for surgery.
We gotta go.
Carter's already late.
That's H-A-R-E-R.
Who's there?
Carter.
Guys, I gotta switch him to go.
What's up, guys?
I'm currently in the hospital.
My mom's over there
and I'm in the pre-op right now
because I have surgery in a few minutes.
I'm nervous.
Still incredibly stuffy.
Next time you see me, who knows?
Okay, Carter, I guess this is time to say goodbye.
You're gonna be just fine.
Okay, bye, Mom.
Wish me luck.
I will.
I will be waiting for you.
Okay, I'm heading back to the waiting room.
A little nerve wracking,
but I know he's in good hands.
We'll give you an update as soon as we can.
Bye.
So my understanding of the surgery
was that it was gonna be a quick procedure,
30 minutes, and just remove nasal polyps.
What I didn't understand
is I'm actually gonna have three procedures done.
One is a septoplasty,
which is essentially a nose job.
The second is sinus surgery on all 10 sinuses.
I didn't even know I had 10.
And lastly is the polyp removal
for a grand total of three to four hours in surgery.
I'm so glad my mom is here with me
because, guys, I am nervous for this.
Okay, Carter's gonna be coming out any minute now,
so I'm gonna go open the door,
see if he's ready.
Carter!
You're all better!
Thank you!
Are you okay?
I kept waking up during surgery.
You kept waking up during the surgery?
Oh, that's why they had to give you so much?
Yeah.
Wow.
I'm good to go.
I just gotta get home.
Oh my goodness.
Okay, let's get you home, Carter.
All right, Mom.
Whoa.
You hot?
Yeah.
I'm tired.
You got a little food too.
Yeah.
I'm so used to patients being just alone.
He's strong.
Yeah.
Strong but tired.
I'm blacked out.
I'm coherent, but I'm wrecked.
They said I kept waking up during surgery,
so they gave me more drugs.
So after surgery, I didn't wake up for three hours.
I don't even know what time it is.
You've been here for a long time, huh?
Yeah, I'm tired.
All right, let's just book it home.
Guys, I love you.
I can't believe what just happened.
What turned out to be a five-minute surgery
ended up being three nose jobs,
septoplasty, terpenoid reduction,
and nasal surgery all back-to-back.
That's how bad my nose was.
So I was in the operating room alone.
You were in the operating room for four hours.
And then I missed sleep for three
because the drugs were so much
because they said I kept waking up during surgery,
which is a really scary thing to think about.
He's unstable.
So you have to grab him the whole way
and he needs to go to the bathroom right away.
Can't let go of him.
All right.
Don't let go of him.
Guys, Carter just got out of surgery
and I'm going to go over to check on him.
It seems like everything went smooth.
Even though we broke up,
we still filmed videos together
and worked together and stuff.
And you know, he's been my best friend
for the last like 10 years of my life.
So I still obviously care a lot about him
and I just want to make sure he's doing okay.
I wonder if he can breathe now.
Here's Carter.
And I got him this and some food.
I think he's up and at him now.
So I'm excited to see him,
to see how he's doing after surgery.
Oh my gosh, hi!
Oh my gosh, Carter!
How are you doing, Carter?
How's your nose?
Yeah, I was getting so much drugs.
I know, I heard.
That's so scary.
I was getting palate surgery.
I got two more drugs done.
Dang, no wonder you look so good.
I'm just kidding.
How do you feel?
Tired.
Yeah, it's time to swap out the gauze, guys.
I think pain management right now
is the first course of action.
I gotta go on two different medications.
This is the prednisone, that's the oxy.
Look how similar they look.
That is scary.
Ooh, that's scary.
I can't read right now.
My eyes won't focus.
I don't know how I would do this without Melissa,
my mom here.
My spatial awareness is also really poor.
So I literally can't find my mouth.
And I'm worried I'm gonna hit my nose.
Good to go.
Looks like we just got a delivery.
What is it, mom?
I don't know what's in here.
Can you open it up for me?
All right.
We're both getting some teamwork.
Oh, that's so cute.
Ta-da!
Cooper is jealous.
Look at Cooper, mom.
Oh my goodness.
He's so jealous.
Cookies, oh my gosh.
Okay, I'm gonna get right into that.
No hesitation.
I don't think I'm gonna be able to taste it
because I still have to recover,
but I can't wait to try one of these in a few days
and I can actually smell and taste.
But for now, it's still flavorless.
Let's see.
It covered apples and strawberries.
All right, Carter's getting ready to go to sleep
with his little teddy bear next to him.
There you go.
All right, guys.
It is the day after Carter's surgery.
So I came over with some smoothies to give him
so he can recover.
Good morning, Carter.
Brought you some, a bunch of smoothies.
Oh my gosh.
How are you feeling?
The next day.
All right, guys.
We are on to day two.
Still not feeling great.
All the medication and things are kind of killing me.
I have my bandage off.
Doing the best I can,
but you can see it's like my nose is dripping blood
throughout the day.
Constantly having to wipe it.
I still can't breathe through my nose or smell yet,
but I think I look okay-ish.
Hopefully another day or two,
I'll be smelling and tasting.
So the next step that I gotta do here on day two
is try to get all this discharge
that's currently coming out of my nose.
It's been really gross.
We're doing this on this rug.
That's it.
I don't think this is gonna be very comfortable.
It is now day three.
I'm still doing a lot of nasal drainage.
As you can see, I'm still bleeding out of my nose.
So I gotta keep using the squirt bottle.
I put it in.
Just woke up from a nap.
Very dazed.
This recovery is taking a lot longer than I anticipated.
I'm gonna check back in
once I'm feeling significantly better.
Okay, it's the next day.
I actually feel tremendously worse today.
So we called the doctor
and they kind of said that was expected.
Taking some ibuprofen, Tylenol.
Your choice of tincture is.
And just knowing that it is-
Okay, so I'm supposed to get more congested
before I get less.
Unfortunately, yes.
At least I got Otter right beside me
to try to help me feel better.
Is that right, little baby?
The whole point of the surgery
is to help me breathe better,
but right now I'm so congested.
If I swallow, it like bubbles and gurgles
because it's completely swollen.
It's horrible.
I'm dizzy.
Yeah, it's crazy stuff,
but apparently it has to get worse before it gets better.
Finally made it outside, guys.
Left the house for the first time.
My whole face feels swollen and numb.
Almost as if I'm like super cold,
but I feel okay.
A little bit kind of out of it.
It feels a little bit weird
to see other people, I guess.
But we're gonna get some food
and see if I sleep better tonight.
It is day number five since the surgery.
I'm here at the Sheriff Ham house
and we got baby Otter.
And I'm gonna try a strawberry
to see if I can taste anything yet.
So I got a little strawberry.
And can't taste anything.
Still can't smell.
Oh, my nose is actually still bleeding.
Okay.
Definitely gonna need a few more tins of recovery.
It is my one week post-op, guys.
I am back at the hospital
to see how things are going
and I still can't breathe at all.
Still super stuffy.
Can't smell or taste yet.
So let's go talk to the doctor and see what's up.
Hulk, are you ready for this?
It's been a rough ride,
but we finally made it to the one week post-op.
And to my surprise,
this would be a very uncomfortable experience.
And here we go again with that super long camera.
This time he's sticking it in even deeper.
And after surgery,
my nose and face is way more sensitive.
The sensation was insane, guys.
I literally almost passed out a couple of times
and had to tell the doctor to give me a minute.
And another thing that surprised me
is that way back,
all the way at the back of my nose,
like five inches in,
there were these little tiny cages
and he had to reach in with a camera
super far just to find it.
And then another tool,
also in the same side of my nose to go grab it,
it's a pull it out.
And when he pulled that thing out of my nose,
I almost passed out and fainted right then and there.
Man, that was crazy,
but I am so glad to have all that stuff out of my nose
and everything all cleaned up.
Just one step further in this healing process.
Guys, that was crazy.
Almost passed out with a camera down in my nose.
I still can't smell and taste yet
because I need one more week of healing.
I'll keep you guys updated.
But in the meantime,
I need to rest and I'll see you guys on the next vlog.
Peace.
